Sony WH-1000XM5 vs. Sony WH-1000XM4: Which should you buy?

The default tuning on these is ridiculously muddy- with boosted bass throughout the entire bass range. There is EQ in the app, but it doesn't have a slider in the bass range. Reducing "clear bass" (a separate adjustment from EQ) does help, in addition to boosting some aspects of midrange and treble.

@@Astro-cc1xg Proper tuning exists for a reason too. Using a phone's equalizer isn't a great solution because most people connect to many devices, and if you have to manually adjust your system equalizer for each product you use(headphone, speaker, etc.) you might as well buy a product that isn't tuned like crap. Most importantly, fortunately with the app, the EQ is automatically saved to the headphones and works across devices.

In other words, proper tuning is best. Second best is an app that can automatically apply EQ (or in some cases they can save EQ to headphone). The worst option is using a phone EQ that must be manually adjusted with each device. It may "exist for a reason," but those reasons are the failures of better options.

Had a XM4, those were nice headphones. But I didnt like how the sensor was exposed and got covered with steam during the summer. And from what I heard, the XM4 hindges can break after some time of use including creaking noises. Now with the XM5's, though they are now bigger and non-foldable, they are still good in noise cancelling and sound after EQing. They dont have the notches while adjusting justike the XM4's, which makes it better and make it sound less cheap.

The xm4 are a bit narrow and hurt your head after like 1 hr but just take em off for like 30 secs and you can put them back on and it doesn’t hurt

I own the xm3 and xm5. They all sound great. The difference is minimal. But the previous versions are more comfortable than the xm5. Is it worth spending extra for the 5? Probably not.

I’m an Apple girl however after much research and frankly I didn’t see why I would spend that much on apple headphones I bought the xm4 yesterday at Best Buy for $229 the xm5 doesn’t fold like the xm4 which is a reason why I got the 4 as well.

I have a the MX4, wonderful headphones, battery life is amazing, sound is good, noise canceling works even better than my Bose quiet comfort 45 but the MX4 has a factory/design problem, they eventually in some point they going to start to doing popping noises following of a piercing high pitch noise. Starts whistling in your ears (feedback) piercing noise. Sony instructions are useless, contact support lead you to reset the headphones and the true is Sony dont do nothing about it, in my opinion I recommend pass from the MX5 and MX4 because I heard the MX5 has the same problem. EDIT: The only way to ride of the high pitch noise is turning off the noise canceling which defeat the purpose of a noise canceling headphone. Are videos and instructions online showing cleaning the electret microphone located inside the ear cup resolve the problem but actually no.

I noticed the same thing happens with other ANC headphones within like 6 months of everyday 10 hours of use they all do this & it's only because the ANC mode is built cheap even thought all these headphones are between $300 & $450...I have been waiting for almost a year or 2 for these issues to be bought to the light but no companies have pointed this out! So idk how unless people only use their headphones for like 2 hours everyday then I imagine they could last more then a year at that point!

I owned the M4's and they broke after 9 months. At this point both the ear pieces are dangling by the cord off of the headphones because swivels on both sides have broken (there is a lot of cheap plastic involved). That isn't even getting into the high pitched whine I get when the sound cancelling is on (which many others have reported). Never buy Sony headphones they won't last.
