I did a lot of reading of user reviews, and tested both for noise cancelling in the shop. I decided to buy the XM4s. A LOT of users are saying the XM5 noise cancelling is too clever, so at times there are lags of strength and changes. When the XM5s are in the ideal situation, they do have the best cancellation, but when things are changing people prefer the constant amount of blocking on the XM4. The XM4 partially uses white noise, which I personally like. I had to choose between the XM4 and BOSE QC45s in the end, and it was a really hard decision. The QC45 have excellent basic buttons, are lighter, and very comfortable. For people with smaller heads the QC45 may feeel a bit loose. But in the end I felt the noise cancelling in an average office/shop environment was a tiny bit better on the XM4s, but it was a 50/50 call to choose between these two. Again, many users really like the XM4s.

Used XM4's 2 years. Gave them to my family, bought XM5's returned them after 2 days because of volume adjustment lagging and auto NC optimizer. Bought another XM4's. Best headphones ever! They just work

Great review - based on the ANC graph, it appeared the XM4 was more effective in cancelling ambient noises. And in my opinion, the XM4 is a much more comfortable headphone to wear.

I think the XM4's are doing the best they can whereas the XM5's could blow everything out of the water with a firmware update. I fully expect them to improve with time. I have the XM2's and XM3's which are both awesome. I skipped the XM4's and my XM5's arrive in two days. Nice video.

xm4 is so much more comfortable on my head and ears than the xm5. the xm5 is lighter and the pads feel like soft pillows, but i still prefer xm4's comfort fit.

@@persiathiest1963 the XM4s? Not at all. Once u adjust it to fit your head, you won't feel the pressure. I just extend both sides for perfect fit. The top bit that touches your head is nicely padded.

On a table side by side the XM5'S look sleeker however when worn i think the XM4'S look far better and are more contoured to your head.

I have the XM4 and am satisfied with the ANC and the sound. Though I have minor issues with comfort. I have short hair and after wearing my XM4 for an hour while sitting, the top of my head starts aching. Also it gets warm and a bit sweaty inside especially if I move around. Maybe this is for the good of the noise isolation which I appreciate. I haven't tried the XM5. Please let me know if these issues are less pronounced with XM5. I can still return it to Amazon and exchange for XM5 if it's really more comfortable.

I’ve tried both and honestly I’d go for the Xm4s because over here I’ve seen them as low as £200 whereas the xm5s cost anywhere between £308-£380

I've had the XM3 for years and recently got the XM5. The bass on the XM5s sounds a tad tighter (but not louder); however, the XM4s has a better treble sound. The 5s sound more like "ssshhh" whereas the 4s are more "Tsssk" sounding. No amount of EQ-ing fixes the treble issue of the XM5s. Maybe a firmware update...but I'm not holding my breath, knowing Sony.

Did you notice that focus on voice is now automatically ticked when speak to chat is activated ? This really annoys me. With xm4, you could choose to focus on voice or not with speak to chat. Hope Sony fixes it soon

I can relate to your condition as i have same AC and strong floor fan too. It doesn’t make sense if it keeps doing auto optimize when i just remotely switch on/off those noise sources in the same room. Maybe play around with the app, and see if you can adjust the ambient/NC setting side?
