Love your reviews! Other than the larger size and superior backlighting, does the X95L have additional updates, improvements etc. from the X93L? (It looks like the X95L has something called XR Clear Image, which the 93L does not have.) If so, any chance there will be X95Ls in smaller sizes? I watched a review of the X95L compared to the Samsung QN95C and it seems to me the X95L is the best mini LED I have ever seen and the only non-OLED TV I would consider, even though I don't really have the space for such a large TV. It just looked that good. I do think that each year TVs seem to evolve. I am not sure they owe us that, but maybe if there is not a major evolution from one year to the next, they can lower their prices. With the advent of MLA and the improved QD-OLED, TVs are just next level the last couple of years. And it seems to me the X95L is as close to OLED as a mini LED can be with great brightness, great blacks and no blooming. Oh, I almost forgot! I have often wondered if the TV manufacturers would include a soundbar with their TVs. The panels are so thin! How can the speakers be any good? I don’t think any TVs have good sound.

Thank you for the review! Bought the X95K 65" in Japan at around $2000 US a couple of months back and the blooming control with firmware updates has gotten better, and the new update brought the X93L features such as Eco dashboard and Game bar for the X95K today. In HDR the image can bloom a bit too much for my taste in dark scenes, but other than that, the TV is an absolute beast. I think the next one I will buy is the successor to X95L at 85". Sony is quality, no matter what people say. Also, it would be lovely if you can share your simple "calibrated" settings (including color!) for each Sony TV review. Especially with Sony TVs the panel quality is so similar, that it would be great to test out them at home to see if the colors improve.

@@Uncle_Titus do u honestly think a Sony master series needs to be calibrated? Seriously? ISF calibration is for mastering use like on a monitor display for editing movies on or a commercial theater. The old CRT projectors needed calibration, but they don’t exist any longer. Now ISF calibration needed to reinvent itself and tell people they need to spend $600 for a “full calibration” for a $2,000 tv. You would never be able to tell if your tv was calibrated or not, some how I’m sure you will argue the of the magic of a full calibration. Remember your display is only as good as the source material.

Yes, with the sales price on the X95K, it's cheaper and probably just as good. What I wish more reviewers would spend some time on is ABL and watching sports like ice hockey and football. From what I can glean, the OLEDs have aggressive ABL which makes watching hockey on them a little disconcerting. That seems to be one of the benefits with sticking with a mini LED set like this Sony.

Yeah, I have the 80L OLED, the difference in picture quality is noticeable though. I used to want a brighter TV yet, as I’ve got older, I’m thankful it isn’t as bright.

@@TheMerlin1984 I feel the same way. I've had some Sony LCD TVs in the past that produced truly beautiful images but were so bright that they hurt my eyes. My Sony A80K OLED has been a wonderful change from that. The gorgeous picture it produces is more than bright enough for my taste, even when watching HDR.

If no improvements are available the next year, then they should just offer the same TV model number and decrease the price slightly. For example, Ram launched a new pickup truck several years ago with a new frame, suspension, engines, etc. It was much more expensive. So in order to compete at the bottom of the market, they continued to build and sell the old truck and labeled it “Classic” and sold it at a hefty discount for several model years.

To me upgrades depend on the individual tv. If there's genuine improvements to be made then absolutely, these should be incorporated. However, upgrades for the sake of it or meaningless small differences to me are pointless. I would rather see price points improve and a model continue for more than a year. When a significant and worthwhile improvement comes about then incorporate it. Otherwise why bother. Are manufacturers really telling me that their last year's model is suddenly, genuinely inferior?

As to your question… I don’t think TVs should have notable or revolutionary updates yearly. The mass majority do not update TVs that often, it is very cumbersome to replace, very expensive to do yearly & and it can’t be that good for the environment to have so many TVs scrapped every year. The last point is an issue with phones so I would have to imagine doing it with TVs would be exponentially worse.

If the year to year improvements to TVS are relevant and make a significant upgrade then yes it's a good thing. We are paying a lot of money for some of these TVS so we should get better performance and features to justify the cost.

I would agree with all the comments saying that if a company is going to release new product every year, they have to offer some major improvement over an existing model. I always wonder how much money and resources could be saved -- and how much that savings could be passed along to the consumer -- if manufactuers simply didn't release new hardware with minor updates every year.

I just bought a 65 X95K a couple months ago for $1599 off Greentoe, I thought about waiting for the reviews but I just relied on an interview with a Sony rep that an X93L is the same TV. It's been an excellent experience, there is some blooming, but it's only obvious with white text on a black background, and only mildly annoying with subtitles, but the upscaling, color and brightness are all great! They also just pushed a software update yesterday that gives the X95K the X93L's software features (game bar, eco dashboard). My biggest complaints have been (1) the lack of 1440P 120 Hz support (I have an HDMI 2.0 graphics card), (1.5) The lack of VRR support on the HDMI 2.0 ports (2) there's some wonkiness with my soundbar (JBL 5.1 Wireless) which I've had to soft reset once or twice, (3) Google TV's basic mode seems impossible to enable, has the feature just been discontinued? But overall it's an awesome TV. I highly recommend it if you don't watch lots of subtitled content. I normally have subtitles off so it's a great fit for me. The 75 X95K for $1999 on Greentoe seems like an even better deal, that size just didn't fit in my apartment.

Still loving our 75inch X95K for the living room. Its brightness and sound is hard to beat if you're looking for a clean, clutter free living room tv. It is HEAVY though!! When we replace it, it'll have to be for another bright but lighter tv. Maybe QD OLED or G3

To answer the question at the end, don't expect major improvements year after year as much as "value" improvements generationally. That could be in the form of updated features, supporting newer standards, improved performance, better power efficiency, or lower cost for similar performance (such as in this case where the X93L is essentially a slightly cheaper refresh of the X95K). This is easier with new technologies (look at OLED in the 2000s to 2010s compared to today). All that said, the companies don't owe it to consumers, they're in business to make a profit and all businesses can be expected to have little to no increased value if the market conditions do not give them that incentive

Only the first sentence was any sort of prediction, while the rest was clarification and examples, before giving short answer that you shouldn't expect anything from a business without market incentive. If most manufacturers could cut their production cost in half, they would still be willing to double the price for the same exact product if the demand would support it.

What about the differences in the performances of screen sizes of this model. Last year several reviewers acknowledged much better backlight control in the 85” version of the X95K vs the 75” and 65”. Still the same case with the X93L? As far as year to year improvements to, I would rather see older models supported longer, and significant improvements every other year. Sony seems to abandon support for any TVs after just a year or two (and I know they just announced eco and game bar rollouts for older TVs but neither of those help with the operating system or picture quality, who’s going to even turn on eco mode??).

I didn't want to wait for the 2023 models and I wanted the price cuts. So I bought from Best Buy a Certified Pre Owned Excellent Condition Sony XR75X95K for $1,950 back in February and I absolutely love and am 100% satisfied with it. I didn't need 4 2.1 HDMI ports because I don't game or have a gaming console. I also have young kids and didn't want OLED because of them or to pay the price for one. Very happy with the X95K and anyone who goes with the X93L will be very satisfied. It is a seriously epic TV.

As usual SONY is brilliant. Waiting for all the others to debut their TVs with prices and then dropping this BOMB on them with higher quality and LOWER pricing than Samsung and LG? Drop the mike fellas...And before anybody starts the what about Hisense and TCL? Those TVs will NEVER be competition with SONY and will REMAIN the "cheap" price leaders at the lower end of the TV range. They both started that way and cannot change that perception with anybody. The lack of available 2.1 hdmi ports is inexcusable. You have two ports that offer 2.1 and one is an eArc so there goes your connection to the much needed sound bar. Now do I completely rely on the included smart features or use the left over port for that? Oh, and I like a lot of people have a series X console, 4k Blu-ray player, and know other capable hdmi hungry peripherals

Depends on if they increase prices or not lower them if nothing has changed. Im ok with higher prices if the tech has gotten better to cost ratio. As well I think when apples vision pro releases it will change how people watch media content. For the price of the 85 inch x95L you could get something that looks like a 100 inches plus in vision pro. Time will tell.

The X93L does NOT have the X clear image processing for better upscaling, it's the only 2023 model of sony TV's to not include it, it's exactly the same tv as the X95K

I believe substantial update is not the requirment with every refresh. Unlike phones, tv's are not something consumer buys on a regular basis of some years. Once bought, the replacement is usually got once the current one stops working or has major issues. And TV R&D for sure would be high budget constant for manufacturers. And like they say"if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Just keep producing the quality tv's with incremental updates unless a major standard is introduced

just bought this tv and I took it back. &5 inch. it was heating up my room . Tv runs hot. 418 watts. My 85 XBR 85x90ch tv runs cool no heat and only 300 watts. Tring to cool my house cost money.

I don't think manufacturer's are obligated to create ground-breaking technology on a yearly basis. I am perfectly happy to see a major brand focus on lean manufacturing, optimizing yield, and lowering cost. If they can launch a brand new model that has the exact same features and specs as the prior year, but is more power efficient, and costs less than a used TV, I would be perfectly happy. Although, they're gonna have to find a good balance because after a couple years of this, consumers will say they're resting on their laurels, and the competition will pass them by.

On the merch: yes I’d love some nit nerd gear! On the improvement question: I expect some sort of improvement but that can be features, can be the actual panel tech, image processing or even price but I don’t want to pay the same money for the same TV a year later. I’ll just buy the older model if so. Of course my preference is better tech because I’m a 🤓 but I think this approach by Sony is just fine. And I’m thinking there is probably an A95L coming that will be the improved performance I want to see. Great review as always Caleb!

My only issue with the 85in version of this TvV was as I saw in your unboxing the protective tape was only on the top and bottom. Which makes no sense to me as the cheaper Sony TVs, like the 90L have the tape on all 4 sides. Due to it not being on all 4 sides there were little permanent foam “scuffs” in the anti reflective coating from the packaging. Only visible with a flashlight or bright light put on to see it but unacceptable with a $4k tv. A simple google search shows this is very common and not worth the hassle of the exchange to chance worse.

I always wait and buy last year's model. We purchased a new-in-box 75" X95K for $1500 this year (2024) in a closeout sale. Love it. As for yearly upgrades: not for us. Unless there is significant changes, why bother. We have 2 older Hi-end Sony 1080p TVs (47" and 55") that have as good a picture as they did when new 12 and 15 years ago. To be honest, the picture on those are as good as the X95K in 1080p. Yes, the X95K is bigger, brighter, and offers 4K, but they're just as sharp in 1080p that 90% of the content is still today. So 12 years later, year over year we have seen little changes not worth the upgrades.

In Poland we have information that there will be 65'', 75'' and 85'' for x95l . Right now there is 75'' on the market but Caleb said that in USA you have only 85''. That's strange.

I think this is possibly the X95L 65" in UK as there is no X93L here, likewise for the 75" version. That said, I can't se any specification difference in the X95L 65", 75" & 85", so maybe different... 🤔

65 and 75” X95L in other counties have XR Clear. 65” X95L has 480 zones and 65” X93L has 420. Both 65s used the same CSOT panel with the lower 2300:1 contrast ratio.

From business and market perception, renaming and repackaging the same tech, is better then reducing the price of the X95K. It would imply subpar sales performance. The X95L is the new model, but its only available at 85". Next year, expect 65" and so on.

The J was a jump up from the H because of Google TV and some better specs. The K PQ was not better than the J. The L seems to be a marginal improvement from the J/K. If you have a J, wait for an M or N.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying last year’s technology at the right price. About 18 months ago, I bought a 65” LG CS for a second home. The price was right and the picture compares very favourably with the C1 I also have. And yes, I would definitely buy nit nerds merch. 🤓🤓🤓

the price and backlight were a problem last year. Now the price is spot on, but the backlight still needs more for me to jump. I am in the disappointment camp that the X95L didn't make a 65" appearance, but that would probably miss the price point anyway due to the increased cost of more backlight zones..., Regardless, I'll probably buy the A95L whenever that finally rolls out, or gets its first sale. Seen the X93L was just under $2k w/ a $200 gift card which is why I was, again, considering the X instead of the A. Thanks for the video.

Does the X93L and the X95K perform drastically better when not in store mode? I’ve only seen both models in a store environment and the blooming is absolutely atrocious on both models. When there is no dark colours on the screen, the tvs both look fantastic but when you see a white Sony logo with a black background or even some scenes in spider man, the tvs look horrendous. Is there a way to fix the blooming in store mode, or is the backlight performance just significantly worse in store mode?

The problem is the content they are playing and what the TV settings are on. It's quite easy to play crap content on TVs with the highest profits that are calibrated/correctly set vs lower margin Tv's that struggle to upscale poor quality content but handle decent content exceptionally well. That's why comparing 4K blue-ray performance vs a 720p steamed content on TV's in store on very different settings out of the box is misleading in store

I dont think TV brands need to be improved year after year if theres not much improvement that can be done. I bought a 85" Z9K even after Sony announced their 2024 lineup because it will still be the 8K model and Master Series for this year, and that TV still performs better than most high end 2024 model TVs

Might be my next TV. I currently have a LG C9 and I have some burn in. I'm a gamer so burn in was a risk. Mine-LED might be better for longevity I'm not rich to buy a new TV every 4 years. I just wish they made the X95L into a smaller size I need it for my bedroom to have the latest and greatest but the X93L looks great to.

TV noob here. Given that there's only a $100 difference between the X93L and the A80L OLED, why would anyone go for the X93L? Does it get brighter than the OLED?

The 93L looks fantastic, I'm thinking of buying this over the Samsung 90C. HOWEVER, I'm seriously concerned the Sony will stick out from the wall too far. It is over 2" thick whereas the Samsung is 1.1" thick. What do you think? Am I overconcerned about thickness? I'm planning on getting an untraslim mount (1.1") .

Thank you for doing this review, Caleb! I'm looking to purchase a new TV soon, and this is the one I've been targeting. (I would get the X95L, but 85" is just too big for my space) One thing, though. At 15:38 in the video you imply that this model doesn't have 4 HDMI inputs. But Amazon says it does. Did you mean HDMI (ARC) Inputs? 📺🌟🎉

He probably means 4 HDMI 2.1 points. Sony only has two and one is the EARC port. The other two are just 2.0. He specifies that because, LG and Samsung flagships both offer 4 HDMI 2.1 ports.

Im currently using a X900F in my living room, thebthing i cant stand is the blooming on the 900f, compared to the 900f how woukd you rate the 93L? I bought a 65 C1 last year before the C2 dropped for my bed room but looking to keep living room with non OLED.

I mean, the second I saw it, I knew it was just the X95K with a slighlty updated processor. That's not a bad thing as the X95k was and is a heck of a panel. Not sure I'd buy this over an X95K on sale, but once this one goes on sale, it's the better buy.

I think Sony X90L is a bit over priced considering it’s got 80 dimming zones and retails at about $1,500. I think $1,200 to $1,300 is where it should be priced. The X93L should be around $1,800 for the 65 inch. That would price the Sony competitively with LGs mini led tv.

Why are Sonys so good with the acoustic surface audio+ ?? Sometimes I don't wanna put the speaker system on & just go off the tv so why don't other brands put that same effort into sound ?? As far as your question no they don't have to but as long as the price reflects that.

my experience yes the built in os and app are significantly worse in blooming and halo then using the hdmi input with external device on my x95k 85 inch its weird.
