We expected great things from the Sony X95L, but we didn't expect them to be this great. In this Sony X95L 4K mini-LED TV (Model: XR85X95L) review, we dive into what makes this TV special. The mini-LED backlight system plays a role, but a smaller role than you might think. Still, while the Sony X95L is an excellent LCD TV, it may not be the right choice for everyone. We dig into the most important details around this TV and debate whether it deserves a perfect 10 score.

Hey everyone! I gotta admit, there are several categories I just didn’t get to in this video - gaming, sound, panel uniformity - but Inwill cover those in the VS. video coming out soon! So stay tuned and get subscribed if you aren’t already. Even more info coming. But, at the end of the day - the picture performance is exactly as I said. Hope you guys enjoyed this review!

Great review Caleb! Very entertaining and informative content! Is it possible for a future review of the new Sharp Aqous XLED mini led tv? Possibly also comparing the Sharp vs the Sony? If any one can challenge Sony for picture processing it's gotta be Sharp as they make they're own processors don't they?

Oh no I promise OLED is better and QD or MLA OLED is even better than that. It's something you don't realize until you get an OLED. Our eyes only know what we show them. It's like thinking 77 inches is big until you go to 85 inches. And then thinking 85 inches is big until you go to 100 inches.

I own this set after finally seeing a worthy and true successor to the Sony 75Z9D. This set has been a revelation in the picture that I've gone back to my library to rewatch older reference titles. It has a jaw dropping picture and I personally think (my opinion of course) that it has a more exciting picture presentation than any OLED out there.

@@samstone2007 I haven't but someone on the X95L owners forum on AVS Forum has both sets. He said the only upside is HDR specular highlights on the G3 but he prefers everything else on the X95L. You're welcome to ask and maybe he can answer some of your questions. He also calibrated both sets himself if I remember correctly and he said the X95L gives you pretty much everything the G3 gives you but it does better with black shadow detail and the Sony processing just adds more realism to the picture. Needless to say he said both sets are fantastic but he finds he is always more impressed with the X95L than the G3. Edit: that's right he said HDR content looks so nice on really bright colors where the G3 loses it's color on the high end because of the inherent technology with WRGB OLED subpixel structure. So bright colors keep their color saturation on 85X95L vs. losing some color as colors get brighter. I know QD-OLED has remedied this issue since it uses a more traditional RGB subpixel but it doesn't come in sizes higher than 77" at the moment. QD-OLED also has other new issues to contend with.

@JonathanAcevedo13 Nice, congrats! It really is just a different experience once you have it set up in your home. I had some trial and errors as I got use to mine but just make sure when you turn your tv off for the day, it's off for about 7 hours to allow it to do panel refresh. I wasn't doing that and one of my games UI was on my screen permanently. I thought I had the dreaded burn in effect after just a couple of weeks. I did a force restart to make it do a panel refresh on start up and it was back to perfect. If you're stepping away for just a short time, there are screen savers but instead I click the option to turn my display off while the tv is still on. You can add it to your menu bar.

The off axis viewing looks amazing! Sony processing and upscaling is also great, and the XR Clear Image is a feature I wish I had on my A95K, the best TV I have ever had and which I just love. However, 85 inches is just too large for my space, so (Darn!) it will have to be a 77 inch A95L for me!!🥰 I really appreciate your LED primer as well as the detailed NIT Nerd section. I saw the X95L next to a G3 and was quite impressed. OLED gives you more of a three-dimensional look and is more punchy and vivid. On the other hand the X95L looks very pleasent to the eye with a more natural or mat look. It has this cinema kind of look which fits perfectly to a 85 inch TV. Comparing it to an A95L 77 inch it is no easy choice here. The QD OLED is smaller and way more expensive and still has some ABL and ASBL issues you don't get with the X95L. I think this TV is the real deal for all cinema lovers and they shouldn't get OLED FOMO here. Sony will win the shootout this year in both categories, OLED and MINI LED... :)

A95L in 77' comes with £6000 price tag over here in UK. That is around $7500. X95L 85' is around $5000, I wouldn't exactly say 'not an easy choice' to be honest. I can't possibly justify 50% price difference even thought I am yet to see A95L in person. It should be out next week and I can't wait to see it. Still, £6000 is way too much in my view. Give it a month or two and it will drop to £5000 if not more as it will simply not be able to compete with LG when it comes with pricing.

Caleb, have you come across any 4k tv with 1,000 nits maxed sdr and 4,000 nits maxed hdr? I would also be interested in a 4k tv with all white colors and the full color spectrum with the same nits for sdr and hdr that I have mentioned. The full color white being 1,000 nits in sdr and 4,000 nits with hdr and the same thing applies with the full color spectrum at 1,000 nits with sdr and 4,000 nits with hdr. On my samsung 4k tv, I use the dynamic mode with hdr since it offers the brightest display with the most color saturation. I have backlight maxed out and local dimming at the lowest setting since there is no option to turn off local dimming. I try to make my tv the brightest as much as possible with the most color saturation as much as possible. Like a video game with all the sliders maxed out, I treat my tv and anything with a display with the sliders maxed out including my phone and laptop displays. Instead of going from 0 to 60, I go from 0 to the highest miles per hours that the fastest car can go but with display settings. I go overkill when it comes to display settings.

Both the Sony X95L 85" and LG G2 83" are high-end TVs that offer excellent picture quality. However, they have different strengths and weaknesses that you should consider before making a decision. The Sony X95L is a Mini-LED TV that offers excellent brightness and contrast. It also has a wide color gamut, which means that it can produce a wider range of colors than the LG G2. However, the X95L's backlight blooming can be noticeable in dark scenes. The LG G2 is an OLED TV that offers perfect blacks and infinite contrast. It also has a wide color gamut, and it is better at handling motion than the X95L. However, the LG G2 is not as bright as the X95L, and it is more susceptible to burn-in.

This mainly means 2 things: 1- Blooming is twice as noticeable on the smaller version because of less than half the contrast of the 85”. Light will bleed in the blacks a lot more but even more in the dark greys.. 2- micro contrast is defined by the panel and, even if local dimming makes a great job at producing a contrasty image, you can’t get inky black small details if the image is all bright. Just think about a snowy landscape image with small dark bisons in the far distance. Since the image needs to be bright you can’t have any led dimming cause bisons are too small compared to the mini leds and you would lose brightness on the snow, while the bisons will be displayed as a dark grey, not black.

@@lorywlf hey Lorenzo. I have scoured the internet far and wide and even called Sony and could not find any information regarding the smaller sizes of this model having different specs at in all in regards to contrast ratio. Apparently all of the sizes have the same panel and level of performance. Where are you getting your information from regarding the differences in contrast ratio between different sizes?

Well here I am about to watch your review of the Sony X95L on my new X95L largely due to the reviews you do. (Also because I broke my old TV): I really have to thank you for all your hard work! I might have bought a lesser TV if it wasn't for the reviews you do. Love this TV.

Has this particular set been fixed from the previous Sony Mini LED model that had blooming issues? im assuming this model is closer or better than Samsungs Flagship mini LED? if so..Im probably all in on a potential 98 to 100 inch model...if the price is right...98 inch tvs are starting to become more affordable...Would love to see Sony bring out a 98 inch mini LED...

The Sony X95L is a better TV than the X95K. It has a more powerful processor, a brighter backlight, and a higher native contrast ratio. If you are looking for the best possible picture quality, then the X95L is the better choice. However, if you are on a budget, then the X95K is still a great TV.

Good morning , I just bought this model and I noticed black spots when I have white or gray background (especially when I'm on my computer or watching hockey) from the front I don't see anything but as soon as I'm slightly from the side it is quite visible. Is this normal? For the price what I paid I'm a little disappointed, should I ask for an exchange? THANKS

Old video now, but now I really like to see how ti compares to the Bravia 7 for us mortals since Bravia 9 is way our of my league. Wonder how good those 2 stack to each other. And for some reason, they promote the Bravia 7 here with the same 22 bit tech as the Bravia 9, maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't the Bravia 7 use a different tech?

Caleb: This doesn't relate to the Sony QD-LED featured here but to the Hisense 100 inch mini-led tv. I've heard that the U8 model offered in USA is brighter than the U7 model offered for sale in Canada (The U8 is not offered for sale in Canada, I have NO IDEA why?). Would you let me know if this is true? I enjoy your video's and reviews.

How does the Sony XR X93L compare to the Sony XR X95L? I have seen the Sony XR X 93L (65 inches) in the store and I really like it. This TV is about $3, 500 cheaper than the X95L and the 65 inches is a better fit for my living room. Is the 95L that much better than the X93L?

Yes. X95l has better contrast and black levels. Important difference is X95l has XR clear image which X93l does not have. Between X95l and X93l, there is no comparison. X95l is the best

Hi Thanks for you review. Im looking at the the UK Model Sony XR65X95LU any thought of if it differs to other countries Models its ether this or a Samsung QE65QN93CATXXU UK model which is a good price at the moment. The main use is for terrestrial tv (Freeview) Movies in a bright room so upscaling is and brightness is a must. Please any thoughts from yourself or your fanbase. Cheers

Okay I give up. I wanted the TCL Q7 because I thought it was a sweet spot TV....and it is. But perhaps I want decent low bit rate upscale processing. I know the SONYs do a good job at that but they costing like $3 grand for a 75 inch. And apparently the QM8 isn't great at upscaling either. Can someone recommend to me a TV that is good at gaming, shows deep blacks, and is good at upscaling, without breaking the bank too much?

These TVs are out of stock EVERYWHERE. Lucky you! Even Sony, itself, is out of stock. I tried buying the x95l through Amazon about a month ago. I waited for the delivery guy to show up and it was a no show. I called Amazon and they confirmed the TV was ordered but they said they’re supplier does not have any I stock. I waited a week or two and ended up cancelling the order. I am checking the web sites twice a day and I cannot wait for these to be in stock again.
