In general there is a big improvement, as a whole package for the mark V. Really enjoying it so far. Battery life is great, sound and Bluetooth codecs support is perfect, camera is very good as well. In general i miss a better video quality where 4k60fps is missing EIS stabilization. There is only optical one acrive while using 4k60 mode. EIS in general helping video to be more stable. Also i miss dedicated gallery app...google photos is bad.

I agree! from what i heard the previous one has issues! Battery life agreed!!! And of course an amazing 3.5! for me camera is great if we are talking about the main sensor, good for ultra wide, the periscope a bit of a let down in terms of quality :(

i switched to a sony xperia xa1 like a few years ago when my samsung a5(2017) died. i liked this xa1 so much that i bought the xperia 5ii later when i had some money and i was amazed. although deffinitly not perfect. in between i had a google pixel 6a when my xperia 5ii was broken for a while and i was to afraid to fix it, i was afraid it would cost more than an in between option of the google 6a that was only 330 euro back then. but now i have fixed my xperia 5ii again and back at it. still want to use for at least year but deffnitly gonna buy a sony again. google pixel 6a way to overprocesed photos, the phone carshed also way more often. i do have a list with things i would love to see improved the sony's but not gonna bother you with it for now hahaha

The Xperia 1 Mk 5 isn't made for any user. This is an elite phone made for photographers, who have no use for a full auto function. KZbin is full of reviewers criticising Sony for the best camera that they can't use. But if you speak with a photographer they will only tell praises for the Xperia 1 Mk 5, an epic phone. I have some good cameras and I only shoot in manual mode, and with the Xperia it is just a glance at the settings to get a perfect picture. Some people get upset with Sony, because they didn't include a full auto button like the Pixel phones. They want the Experia 1 Mk 5 because it is best phone and uses the Exmoor dual layer sensor, but they can't get a decent picture out of it - the Xperia makes this evident, and it is the reason for the flood of critical reviews on KZbin. If you are a photographer, especially from the time of film cameras, the Xperia 1 Mk 5 is a dream come true...

And that is why i am saying it is not for those, it also because of that isn't the best for fleeting moments. And the main sensor is amazing like stated in this video, and it can take amazing pictures. Just wish the periscope was better, that was basically my main criticism for it.

I enjoyed the manual mode, full control over shutter speed and ISO, metering etc was great. But the other lenses just didn’t cut it! And the noise!!! It is a return to form, just not the must have. Swapped for an iPhone 15 Pro Max in conjunction with my Canon M50 MKII for my manual shots. The 5X portrait on the iPhone is great, and the other lenses are brilliant. When Sony nail it - I’ll get another, but right now our mobiles are still more mobile than camera and there for quick snapping when nothing else is available

One of the best phones I have used I bought it since it arrived on the market and to be honest I have never regretted it AlsoI i bought Xperia cooling fan (xperia stream) This fan with this phone made me amazed with performance when I play PUBG Mobile The phone is cold even if I play for a long time And the game mode on Xperia 1v is amazing and has some features that you won't even find in other gaming phones

Thank you man :) And yeah, that is the main gripe, auto is fine, but it is better and faster to do so on the Xiaomi and "normal" phones. But overall quality with main camera is up there!

I tried it a few months ago, I thought the cameras were decent but didn't blow me away and ye the telephoto disappointed me too, I just hated pretty much everything else about the phone haha 🤣 I just find Sony phones maaajorly boring, Sony almost market them as a tool. great shots as usual though mate, never disappoint with your photography!

Did you notice an improvement since Android 14 ? In my case, YES, a huge improvement on main camera & telephoto zoom. Well done Sony ! 😎

Same. I do think the telephoto tho very ingenious needs a bigger sensor at least. It's also doesn't help the fact that it's in a fixed station and the variable lens makes it a bit softer due to the nature of the sensor and outer lens being none moveable like camera lens. Makes me wished they'd just stick two telephoto lens and use crop on both of it for better results. The 1 III actually has a bigger sensor than both the 1 IV and 1 V. They could use a better native apps like album, music, file manager, etc. Otherwise I think software is fine. Stock Android is decent but having some native apps would be better. Sony still have a long way to go with smartphones. Maybe they should've just kept the Z moniker and change the shapes like the XZ and 1 series.

I personaly LOVE the fact that Sony DOESN'T have its own gallery app! (I have had both Apple and Android phones and the "native" gallery-app is always just half the story - you always need more. So for me either Google Photos (for the simple stuff) or Lightroom for a bit extra are just the right apps!) For me the best decision! But besides that I mostly agree with your conclusions :-)

was the periscope in 1 iii better? it basically used the same technic but used only 2 distances right. maybe the moving lense within the system is just a little bit too much for such a small sensor and all the math technics behind it?

Honestly hard for me to say because I haven't used that :( And maybe it is, there is for sure potentiol for it, but so far it isn't good enough to compete on the best level when it comes to the periscope (periscope only)

My previous plan is to get iPhone 15 for the iOS and video and Xperia 1 V for photo, but I decided to get A7RV as dedicated photo camera, Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder for video and iPhone 15 for phone stuffs, is it better decision? The lens I will get is Tamron 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 but I not yet sure which ultra wide lens that I can crop a bit for everyday use, should I get Loawa 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 manual lens 496g, Sony 12-24mm F4 565g or Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 795g?

I mean to be really fair a proper camera will do without a doubt better, with the biggest details being depth and general information being captured! So I would say that is a great choice, realisticly yes the best camera is the one you have with you, and of course you want that to be a good one, but for most days without planning to capture a phone will do perfectly well with only sometimes feeling like you would want your camera with yout!

A friend of mine uses the Mark 1 ii and honestly, it still hold his camera capabilities to this day, the only issue i find when inused his phone to take some photos was the overheating from just only, being on the camera ui

i got the 5ii and still very happy about it. maybe the periscope of the 1iii is better? it does only use 2 lens distances. maybe the chip doesnt have to use so much mathetical stuff in that case. i dont know

If you try telephoto with an Xperia 1v at night, the image looks washed out. I advise keeping the Xperia 1v away from humidity and moisture because my lens gets fogged up. Can you please review Xperia 1vi upon release?

I am considering dumping S22 Ultra because of the very unstable Exynos platform that has issues with everything and the battery life is a half day. But, I am afraid that the camera block will be a downgrade after the samsung, and I already got used to the face unlock since Huawei at 2018. What do you think?

Realistically, Samsung and Sony have a very different approach, when it comes my preference an easy win for Sony, Samsung shots often look way to processed and lack of understanding photography and more like a hey let me share it via Instagram. BUT sony does require more "work" to get the shot. Auto will do fine, but it is a phone aimed at using pro mode more. But in turn you get the 3.5mm headphone jack, microsd support, and a shutter button!

had the s22u exy for a month, returned it because mainly battery and zoom cameras were disappointing. Sure, in good light they were nice, and the 10x was fun, but editing anything even in Raw was a pain, and with less than optimal light (even golden hour) they just were too soft. I think sony delivers much better and consistent photos even in auto, and battery life is much,much better. You might miss spen and once in a full moon the 10x, but I prefer the sony much better. Different story with the s23u, 8gen2 made miracles, had it for half a day and left me impressed over the s22u

Man i like your review . Did you got the December update in that update i have seen on my Xperia 1V that Sony has tweaked the tlephoto lens i saw that after taken some pictures pictures are more sharp now it seems also more consistent now .

Oh that is amazing to hear!!! When it comes to the 1V sadly it was send by Sony and it had to be returned pretty much a day or 2 after this video:( so i did not experience it.

not an easy one, I think both are going for a very different approach, if you want a quick camera, that is a bit more reliable because of that I would say the Xiaomi, if want to perfectly setup your shots, and mostly use the main sensor, love video recording, then I would say the Sony. It is never as easy as a: this is the clear winner sadly when it comes to different phone brands.

I've been using my Xperia 1 V since the end of June; I think that the optical zoom needs to be between 1 to 10x; also the digital zoom should be further, say 30x. I agree, as coming back to the Xperia from using the Oppo Find X2 Pro; I was surprised Sony no longer has its own photo app!! I have heard/read somewhere that Sony's Xperia team is tiny in comparison to the bigger Android players which could explain their near stock Android OS. I love that it has a headphone jack, expandable storage and a camera shutter button though. Now with Android 14 dropping on my handset this morning, it will have the improved Bokeh

Yeah they are indeed smaller, and of course they need to spend their funds well, with having their own very unique camera software experience, and I think that without a doubt cost a decent amount. And I am waiting for that update, portrait shots are difficult for me as I have no one to really shoot shots of.

How many times you said the word periscope?!I believe if we take all the boxes of a device that is trying to be the one to rule them all, Sony is getting closer and closer and I don't know if they realize that.Sony should rethink their market strategies and they should emphasize not only on camera but also the sound as in codecs and also the jack.They should also work on apps that help more the "niche" that they aim for like better music app, apps that can work with their TV's, consoles, etc.I think they need not only the photo app but a own skin.There are some tweaks to be made but first they should be on top 3 with the auto cameras, better support and slightly better charging ...and better and more aggressive marketing.I own Samsung since the S10 and the S20 and s21, all these 3 series had mediocre cameras results compared to the competition and "nobody noticed that".

My biggest gripes with these Sony remain the size and the software experience. Sony has completely ruined their software by ditching all that was unique about their software in favour of Google's garbage software and apps. I just can't use a phone with stock Android and without something as basic as a theme engine that allows me to cover the UI in black. Sony used to have that. Now they don't. Just like they used to have a normally sized version of their flagship in the form of the Compact. Now they don't. Their cameras haven't been *the best* in years. The last time I remember them having the best camera on a phone was during the Z3 era and even that one didn't last long 'cause tge LG G4 took their crown a couple of months later. And I really do love the headphone jack and microSD slot, plus the camera button. But the size and the software really kill the experience for me and I can not live with those on Sony. Heck, I'm trying to fix my S10e to shove the S23 back in its box 'cause I loathe the size of the phone (and the cameras, and the lack of microSD and headphone jack). These are even bigger. It's an absolutely no from me.

Size myself I have less issue with because it allows for sensors I like to be on there, with smaller phones the battery would suffer to much for that I think. for software, I do think they should step away from that google experience as well, it doesn't feel right, and I don't genuinly like the "clean" google experience myself. And for your Samsung experience, I can understand that, the S10e was also a phone I was easily recommending to people who wanted those features and not pay the crazy prices, Samsung nailed that phone series with a step for everyone, but sadly they have fallen down a lot I think. Even more so with camera processing, you almost MUST do it in manual because it just has a shit ton of sharpening, and no soul in the shots at all!!! And I do wish all phones had the MicroSD, 3.5 and camera button!

I think Sony made a wrong decision on their tele lens. Prime lens is always sharper and faster than zoom lens. I think they just want to save on sensor for medium and long range.

Ironisch genoeg zijn er reviewers die een dergelijke aparte app bloatware zouden noemen. Ik ben trouwens benieuwd wat je van de Xiaomi 14 Pro vindt (in het bijzonder in vergelijking met de 13 Pro).
