Great to see you continue to review Sony phones, and I think you’ve been really fair towards Xperia devices, unlike many mainstream medias which either ignore it or produce negative reviews which are bordering on smack talks. I really appreciate your effort for giving the underdogs a fair chance! Had I stayed with Android still, the XZ2 Compact would probably be one of the phones to consider since my past Xperias (Z3, Z5 Compact) have been very reliable. Ultimately though, my desire for long term software updates (which Sony was excellent at, for Android, but 2 years was still short for me) has made me an iPhone 8 user. I’m loving the iPhone 8, but seeing an Xperia review makes me feel bittersweet of ditching a company I have a soft spot towards ☹️

I agree.......it's amazing how many "reviews" of SONY phones are really just smear pieces. I am starting to think a lot of these "reviewers" are paid for their "opinions"

hyungwoo0312 your iPhone 8 costs more and gives you worse specs. Not to mention the Sony XZ2 compact is physically smaller than an iPhone 8. This Sony has a Full HD+ HDR resolution (2160x1080) display that is 18:9. Where as the iPhone 8 has a smaller lower resolution HD (1334x750) display that is 16:9. No HDR display on any iPhone, except the iPhone X. XZ2 LTE speed is 1.2 gigabit. Bluetooth 5 multiple device support on this XZ2 compact. Currently no iPhone supports multiple audio devices.

Sean Godsell SONY phones are usually way ahead of iphones in terms of specs. Just with water proofing/resistance they were years ahead of Apple.
@hyungwoo03126 жыл бұрын
Sean Godsell Yes. I’m aware of the specs and all that. I won’t make any arguments that the iPhone 8 is better than the XZ2 series or any other phones because I’m happy with my choice right now and that’s all that matters to me. I made the choice because as I said, I wanted a replacement for the Z5 Compact which had its support ended in late 2017. For a replacement, I wanted the quick and long-term software support that Apple provides and I also wanted to try out an iPhone. Been an Android guy for 5 years till now ;) I was fully aware of the specs and everything the iPhone 8 provided prior to my purchasing decision and I had the option to return it if I didn’t like it, but it’s suiting me well and I hope it remains that way. As for a few points you made, 326 ppi doesn’t irk me since the Z5 Compact’s 4.6 inch 1280x720 screen was 319 ppi. Plus, the Xperia Z3’s 424 ppi (my phone before the Z5C) didn’t entice me enough to be swayed away from an HD screen. For aspect ratio, I actually prefer 16:9 over the recent 2:1 trend. As for HDR screen, yes, the XZ2’s screen is HDR while the iPhone 8 isn’t, but the iPhone 8 also has HDR playback support for apps such as Netflix. In the end, though, these are just what I thought I can point out. I don’t intend to create an argument. I knew all this prior to my purchase and if you prefer other options, that’s totally fine by me :)

hyungwoo0312 I have zero issue with anything you say. For me the issue is the way iPhone users in general behave as if iphones do things so different, so unique, so special to any other phones...... which they generally do not. In fact a number of Android devices often have features and innovations that don't appear on iphones for years. The SONY XZP 2 looks like it will blow both the iPhone 8 and X away imho based on its features and especially if that camera works in the dark the way they have claimed..... yet I still expect iPhone users to tell me how incomparable an iPhone is *eyeroll*
@erithacusR6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for making your review videos, and for giving your honest opinion about all the phones you review. I am a Sony phone user (have been for a number of years, and so yes, I do generally like them) and I think all of the reviews you have done on Sony phones have been absolutely fair. :-) Plus, you always specify when something you complain about is related to personal preference/opinion and not necessarily a problem with the phone. Your phone reviews are the best I've seen anywhere (I much appreciate the non-gimmicky format, the consistent tests between phones, and that you always give a good idea of what to expect with performance and battery life). I think you are absolutely right to call out any manufacturer when the phones they are marketing are not perfect for the price! Even a £150 phone is 3/4 of my monthly household food budget... So I find any sub-standard phone being offered at £300+ is just insulting. However, the information in your reviews has actually saved me from wasting money on an expensive dud phone. :-) If flaws are not called out honestly, then manufacturers will continue to keep them in their phone designs will ultimately alienate customers. So Thank you for doing what you do and calling phone flaws out honestly when you come across them! :-)

If i have to be honest i like the sony camera app. It feels more like using an actual camera (focus confirmation+shutter) and less like a toy. That's my opinion as a photography nerd.
@artyfly1006 жыл бұрын
Damir Franc I see your point. Especially with some camera features being separate "apps" like 4k and bokeh mode.
@lm9711206 жыл бұрын
All I can say about you is you are a honest man! Although you lacks quantitative analysis, but your experiences are real and many don't mention. However I would suggest you try to understand how everything works. Like you mentioned that the camera is actually slower to take a picture, which is true and many don't mention as they think that's all to do with sd845, so can't be slower. The reason is the new algorithm Sony got this year, that takes multiple frame then compose for better HDR and lowlights, and also draw/sharpen all the edges (as an application of tof sensor at back). Thus, more processing time. Another one is the improvement in jack sound quality, this is due to upgrading to the recommended codec (for sd835 and sd845) wcd9341 instead of the 9335 used in last year model. Another point you mentioned about the back can be pressed down a bit which many didn't mention, yep you are right! (There is wireless charging planned but dropped at last minute). Overall you said it feels more premium, yep it is, as the budget Sony have on this is actually few times more than the previous one (xz1 compact I am using just feels half finished, I have every compact apart from z5c). I heard it could be the last premium compact SOMC ever made, as it barely sells, the next one will be midranger specs only. So for these keeps saying waiting, I would say maybe your turn now... Also for these saying hate the design, I recommend you have a look at the real one, as 3d designs, materials, finish and textures don't get reflected much in pictures.
@ExclusiveMontages6 жыл бұрын
Wow, where did you get all of this info from? Nice! And now about "the new algorithm Sony got this year" for the camera. Since you've got almost all Compacts did you notice any improvement to the previous XZ1 Compact after some recent update in terms of photo quality? They're using the same sensor and F/2.0 lens so I think they could improve the XZ1 C's camera via software as well. But we all know - money. So they probably won't improve anything on XZ 1, so that you have to buy the newer model. Also wondering what are your thoughts about the even older, X Compact - do you have it as well? I'm thinking about switching from iPhone SE to one of them (X Compact or XZ1 Compact as the XZ2 is too expensive for me). I think I'll grab the X Compact for around 200€ and wait one year to upgrade to XZ2 Compact when its price come down to around 300-350€. I need 4K video recording, though, but I've heard that with 3rd party camera apps you can do that on X Compact - is that correct? Cheers.
@lm9711206 жыл бұрын
Actually, the XZ2 series got a different lens made by better materials compared to previous models, which is why they called it Motion Eye 2.0, which topped up the improvement in the algorithm (thanks to increased budget). Regarding X Compact, I just sold mine a while ago, I have to admit it is very smooth and very fast for daily use, much faster than XZ and S7/S7+ released at the same time (I compared them head to head) in launching apps etc, not bad battery life (certainly better than XZ, but not as good as XZ1C). There are a few problems tho, firstly, the product at the era of cost-cutting, so expect cheap parts, like the vibrator loud as the speaker (like on XZ1C), bad display with serious ghosting (like on XZ1C), tho colours are quite alright. I would pick XZ1C as that's at least better spec (UFS, 4G RAM, SD835), longer guranteed support and more functions (960fps, native distortion correction which X compact doesn't have, better camera) to play around (especially if you want 4K, the third party on on X Compact doesn't seem to be great). Price wise I would suggest just wait for now if you are not that keen for compact as SOMC does not really care about XZ2 series as their priority is on the release later as well as 5G (their contract for back-mounted fingerprint sensor will end this summer, JDI's under display sensor is kinda ready), they are more of transformative and experimental products (tho they are good). If you are keen for the size, heard that's confirmed there won't be a flagship SOC on the future compact, and will be carriers only for seleced regions (similar to XZ2P) since it barely sells. I would think that's worth waiting for price cut. At the moment if you really want to grab one, I would still suggest XZ1 compact (very cheap for new one), at least it seems to improve a bit after updates (tho Oreo is the main reason they screwed up) and we could expect for more updates, while for X Compact I doubt Sony still cares much (they dropped that premium midranger line as that was a failure).
@ExclusiveMontages6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You seem so well informed! How does it come if I may ask? :) I'll probably wait for the price cut of XZ2 C or new iPhone SE then. Cheers.

Great review! I like the XZ2 more but this one is a great phone too, it reminds me of some Lumia with the polycarbonate back. And actually the charging time is as you said. I noticed that my phone (after several months) charges faster, dont know why... The camera apps (bokeh, AR, etc.) are more or less the same that came with the Z1 if I'm not mistaken, it needs improvements for sure! If you want a fast shutter you can turn on object tracking, it works very well.

Great review as usual & thank you! I simply don't understand why high-end compact phones aren't more popular these days. Even something slightly bigger than XZ2 Compact with higher-end SOC (SD 660 or above) is hard to find in the market. Originally intended to get the Huawei P20 but performance is a let-down. Would also consider Xiaomi (Mi7?) but their UI is too far from stock Android for my tastes. So few options. Looks like XZ2 Compact is really the only option in 2018.

I have had Sony phones since my first analog phone in 1999 - I prefer the compact size, and have been most impressed with this latest model. I got it 3 months ago, and really appreciate the longer battery life. I am sad that Sony Australia is not selling them, here, and I had to order from Hong Kong, but it came very quickly and at an exceptional price via e-bay. I had to set it up myself (for the first time) and was grateful for all the helpful KZbin clips that helped me do this. Overall, I am very happy with my new Xperia XZ2 compact!!

I just got this phone and am debating returning it to stay with the A3 2017. Really wanted to like it since every year even basic apps like Maps become more demanding and previous mid-range phones like the A3 eventually don't have enough power to provide a lag-free experience. Love the power from the 845 and agree the screen is fantastic. But it is just too heavy in the pocket. Also not thrilled with the ergonomics of the power button and fingerprint location, something that will be used so much. Biggest issue for me is notifications. So hard to go back to standard notification light (which is quite small in this phone) after having Always On Display. A3 2017 is my perfect phone, just wish it had more power and ram, but looks like Samsung has killed this line. Great review, very fair and well presented.

Nice review, Damir. A while back, I bought the X Compact based on your review and recommendation. It has been the best smart phone I've owned (coming from Samsung smart phones). I might skip the XZ2 Compact, though, as Android P and those Sony dual cameras (for better low light performance) are just around the corner (I usually upgrade my smart phones only when the camera technology has significantly improved and when the native OS of the new phone is higher than the latest OS of my current phone). On the other hand, XZ2 Premium with the dual camera is so heavy and so it may just be that Sony will not be using dual camera technology for their compacts for a while.

The design its a step down from XZ1C, and 5" is already to much, the perfect compact in my opinion will be a 4,5 - 4,7 inch display with very thin bezel and rectangular shape that make Sony stand up from the crowd.

I moved on from Sony phones since the Z series but must admit I've never had a phone that I really enjoyed as much since. I hate the fact that all the best spec phones are so big and don't fit in my pocket comfortably. However, the XZ2c looks very promising! Great size, top specs, ergonomic design and I love the Sony skin along with the custom features like PS4 remote play and great camera... All things that I miss having. I'm glad the bezels have shrunk too as the huge bezels were a bit off-putting. I don't really care for the whole "bezel-less" look. I currently use a bezel-less phone and feel that I have to handle with extra care as it may not survive if dropped. At least the XZ2c looks more durable and the plastic back will not crack like the glass back on my device. I will most likely get this on my next upgrade unless there is a better compact phone on the market?

Thank you once again for the very informative video.I really have to agree that Sony needs to work on the camera experience.Their cameras are very capable but not user friendly.Samsung made a good adjustment on their slow motion camera to automatically start capturing when the camera detects movement.Even if Sony has great EIS the lack of OIS makes it more difficult to take good low light shots because the camera shakes easily which leads to shorter Shutter speeds.If you have a tripod and you are a good user of the manual mode you can get very nice images on the Xperias and I really like their natural colors, but they need to make their cameras more convinient and easy to work with. My last phone was an iPhone 6S, now I have this xz2 experia compact. I really like this phone. I like mostly all about this phone, but I have to agree and say that the only problem I can see is the camera interface, it is really slow, complicated to use and unresponsive. I still don't know how to film on slow motion since the instructions do not match the real experience. Then I went home and tried to stream my HDR videos in my hdr 4k tv and failed, wi-fi bandwidth might not be enough although I am using a premium router. Please SONY, listen to Damir and develop a new app from scratch, it really is a pain. Anything else about the phone is amazing besides audio which really is from another planet on the Bluetooth headphones that came with the phone.

The Nitpicker I bought the xz2 compact a week ago but unfortunately I can't get the 7 hours screen on time as u said. The best i get is 5 hrs screen on time using mobile data. Is there special setting to be done to achieve this 7 hours screen on time? I adjusted the screen brightness to medium level .

Compact series peaked with the z3, then just got worse and worse. This is a step in the right direction, but two steps back in other areas. Taking away the 3.5mm jack was the last straw for me.
@greypayelll25076 жыл бұрын
After the z3 compact we had the x compact which was massively underrated. That phone is so goood to this very day. Now this xz2 compact is a step up in so many areas display, in hand feel and performance wise it's miles miles better than the z3 compact. It's a huge upgrade and i wouldn't let the no hp jack hold you back if you want a compact just go for it. It's brilliant in so many important aspects.

Finally a Sony phone without the useless stupid headphone jack no one uses. I hate those dust catching holes I have no use for. Design is beautiful and the performance is the best you can currently get.

I still have the z3 compact, it's still a blazing fast phone and the battery life is great. I arrive at work at 99-100% battery and get home at 60% battery

What, no mention about network compatibility? OK, heard about its features, but if there are reported issues at different networks, it’s junk. Seen vids and read reviews there were issues at different networks for this phone.

A couple of years ago I was using the Z1 Compact. I think I used it for two and a half years, at least. I really want to like this new XZ2 Compact but I can't. My old Z1 compact had a glass back and it felt sleek in my hands with its flat back. This new phone looks like it has been eating too many burgers! I want to like it but I can't. Great review though.

I think like you, but I test this new compact in a store and believe me.....it's amazing holding this in the hand. It still a compact, but with 5 inch! You gonna test it...

IDIAKEZ MORALEZ ill be waiting for xz3 compact, or whatever its name, hopefully with earphone jack, and not too thick, and no bulging, I know what u saying it curves at the back to fit the palm of ur hand, but still I dont like it the new design
@anas74126 жыл бұрын
IDIAKEZ MORALEZ I tested it in the sony store, I agreee with u, feel so good in my hand, but still I didny buy it, coz no headphone jack, what a deal breaker. p/s I still dont like the new look, but I accept it coz it so comfortable to hold
@mbaxter226 жыл бұрын
Ergonomically, the curved back is much better. Thin phones are just for marketing; they don't actually gain you anything as the person using the phone in your hand.

As an A3 2017 user I really miss good small phones and every time I go to my carrier and look at all new phones from A8, P20 ... I just dont like feel in the hand and lack.of one hand use. I did took a look at XZ2 compact Iam.not sure with design and I dont like Sony UI. Now that the price of S9 feel to 620.euros might think about, I like Samsung UI and feel in the hand is good the phone is not wide...

SONY XZ2 COMPACT or XIAOMI MI6 ?
@punx6655 жыл бұрын
Try it in two years again, the camera will probably break like on all xperia devices(camera may be in use by another application).It is also not the best compact device - it is the ONLY all other phones are over 130mm.

tried it yesterday, great replacement for my s4, but uncomfortably heavy, even if I could get used to it, but the deal-breaker is the lack of a headphone jack, and also annoyed by the lack of wireless charging and quick charging... I'll move to the cheaper and still very good S7...
@lionelb82276 жыл бұрын
It has Quick Charge.
@_Digitalguy6 жыл бұрын
so maybe I misunderstood... So basically it has quick charge but the charger is not quick charge? (= you have to buy one separately?)
@lionelb82276 жыл бұрын
The phone is QC compatible, but some units are shipped with a charger that is not Quick Charge capable. I know some people that received the Quick Charger for example. So to know if the phone has the Quick Charger included in the box, you have to ask the seller or find out when receiving the phone. If it is not included you can buy one separately .
@_Digitalguy6 жыл бұрын
thanks all for the replies, so it's a non issue since I already have several quick charge chargers and power banks, still the headphone jack's absence hurts... But that screen was just amazing, so much better than the superamoled on my Samsung...
@sgodsellify6 жыл бұрын
Digitalguy it has quick charging. In some areas they include the quick charger in the box, and some others don't include it. However if you have a quick charger it supports it.

Sorry, cant sure i understand u right - u said that XZ1c is not much better?
@johnsonx24266 жыл бұрын
Антон Сергиенко xz1 isn't better at all and almost in everything, first of all he obviously mentioned that there is no much deference in battery performance, performance never been an issue in Sony smartphones, the rear camera is way better even though it is the same 19mp camera sensor, the 5mp selfy camera is actually better than the 8mp in the xz1c, 18:9 aspect ratio gives you bigger screen in the same small body and more comfortable in hands, slightly improved speakers, FHD+ 5 inches display and "" HDR""...... Finally the design maybe does noy look better in the xz2 but it is definitely much more practical.
@SommaRain6 жыл бұрын
no head phone jack... Sorry. But as a XZ1c user i cant see any things that will made me want this new XZ2c. again after all i saw i can say - XZ1c is much better!

It would destroy my pocket because of its thickness. My Htc Radar died last year, it was 11 mm thick and 3.7" screen and still was feeling heavy fat brick. This bigger in all ways.

For me, phones which are ~15cm tall, are pocket destroyers :-D

This XZ2 compact is physically smaller than an iPhone 8, only it's slightly thicker. You must be a skinny jeans person. Especially to the point that you don't carry anything in your pockets.

@Bayonet18096 жыл бұрын
I think there is too much variability in your photo testing methodology: the better photos taken a day later might just be better because of the quality and quantity of light on that day. Also, "grammatic" is an English word, so your self-correction was unnecessary. :)
@Bayonet18096 жыл бұрын
The distinction is not just between Summer and Winter; light quality varies from day to day, even hour to hour. Compensating for light quality with seasonality is simply not feasible, as it ignores too many other factors. I understand it is not possible to maintain the same outdoor conditions, but perhaps you could introduce a control test to remove variability in both your perception and the sunlight. I know you already do this for low light testing, but you could implement another for conditions similar to outdoors (very high luminance 5500k-6500k colour temperature studio lights). I am not claiming you should do away with your outdoor tests, as they do have their own value, just that you could also provide a consistent reference point.
