Great review there, Matthew! XZ2 costs $650 and S9+ costs $930 here. I think my pick would be XZ2 for worthy overall package. It has more stable software, Camera performance that is on par with the competitors (one of the best, I think), and good battery life. Sony improves their camera algorithms a lot with their XZ2. It has the same sensor and features as XZP/XZ1, but they brought the new Spectra 280 ISP to the phone. That's why the image quality of XZ2 improved dramatically from XZ1. I might get the XZ2. I don't know which colour to pick, though. I like the green one because it looks unique, changes colour according to lighting condition, and looks more like blue (which is the colour I love). But the black is simple and elegant. Which one should I choose?

I think 2 is the generation for a Sony device with the best camera. The Xperia Z2 came out back in 2014 and it had the best camera during its time. Not even the S5 ever touches it. Only the Note 4 did beat it however, and I was saddened that Sony didn't really improve that much after the next years. But I'm glad they've improved massively once again this time, and I wish they would continue to improve more and more every year, not just staying the same for years.

Johnny Since what about 2015? Z5 had highest points in dxomark. And X performance was per with Samsung S7. So it is just reviewers choose to speak dirt on Sony, I myself I've compared every latest Sony flagship from 2014 to now with every flagships from Samsung and Apple , and Sony never cease to amaze me. It's even better in daylight and arguably a good competitor in low light. And this year he has proved to be superior in low light than apple and Samsung

Syd Bailey Xactly man....being real even in d shots...just as a human eye sees the situation...ofc human eye doesnt saturate pics like the s9+. Talking about being real, the xz2 pics r way more natural and have a really good dynamic range as compared to dat of d s9+.....all this with just 1 camera. Not 2 like on d s9+. What s9+is doing with 2 camers, xz2 is doing much btr with 1camera. Xz2 literally has kicked out the s9+

Please shoot both phones at same angle and not slightly the xz2 above then s9 a bit low . Like on the photo at 1:46 xz2 was a bit higher than the s9 which makes the hat clearer on the xz2 while the s9 is a bit lower.

Impressed with the Xperia XZ2 camera performance it actually does a really good job of taking amazing photos that on par with or even better than the dual camera sensor of S9+. People are easily fooled by bright and over saturated colours in photos making them look "better" as he said in the video. How is that better? I've always appreciated Sony's camera for taking photos and having them appear more natural and true to life, if I would like, I can edit it and bump the colours, but well done Sony.

i prefer XZ2 for video since it has no filesize limit for long takes. the samsung videos stop at 4GB filesize, or 10 mins max at 4K res.

Regarding S9's 960 auto detect, it's cool but sometimes it just isn't intelligent enough to pick the right moment and that's where the XZ2's manual function actually makes more sense so it's a mixed bag really...

Haha! Love this review. The camera was so much improved from the predecessor. I like it when comparisons focused on details than exposure. Remember that you can always adjust exposure but details can never be recovered while editing. Waiting for the Motion Eye Dual Camera, 19 MP f/1.8 RGB sensor w/ a 51,200 ISO capability and 12MP B&W sensor with a 1.55 pixel pitch. And for those stupid people that complain about too much noise, AUBE Fusion Image Processor is there to handle all your complains.

you should have shot the s9+ night pics with F/2 also..but i think the xperia would still do a better job. but it is known that as higher the f stop the sharper image will be but ofc you dont get as much light into your sensor as with a lower f stop

each of them have their pros and cons...but i prefer the xz2 though...camera's aside, the phone pack with stock android os that will work fluently rather than s9+ for long term usage...i think xz2 also has a longer usage's time than the s9+...

Xperia XZ2=Natural photo, Better Stabilization, Better Night shot but high ISO, More advantageous in slow mo FHD/HD 960fps Galaxy S9=Punchy color (auto beautification), Better Bokeh atleast now, Good Calibration because of AI chip Hmmm I would go on more Sony than Samsung because Natural photo is way more valuable than cartoonist effect of Auto Filter of Samsung. Well it makes sense sony biggest problem with cameras was image processing so this year they teamed up with snapdragon to fix it and you see the results clearly On paper the s9+ should destroy the xz2 in the camera department Instead you see a very intense match Win or lose sony did a great job this year the only thing i personally like on s9 more than xz2 is the headphone jack and the finger print scanner placement

Sorry to say but I don't think Sony will be returning the headphone jack, since they've removed it away from the XZ2 Premium as well. Maybe, if Sony realizes, that the lack of headphone jack has made their sales worse, then they might bring it back again.

Nice unbias compare. Pretty unusual for mericans....that always trash Xperias in any possible way. Btw. I think video is better on Xperia, That 10bit HDR works great for lowlights detail and exposure, and normal SDR for daylight is also superb with its inteligent active mode stabilisation.
