I discovered something similar after knocking down a plasterboard wall a while back and pulling the mesh tape off with plaster still attached to it. It was your idea in a previous video that inspired me to build a jig and try to recreate that crumbled concrete slab effect with gypsum plaster. Though I switched from gypsum plaster after several failed attempts to a hard set wall filler and building sand mixed. The results I got were amazing. The plasterers mesh tape is alot thicker than the mesh you used here and certainly has the grounds to make the effect of steel reinforcement bars exposed in broken concrete. Inspiring stuff as always.

Awesome idea. You could do this for an asphalt road too. Only thing that you need to chang is to add some black paint to the mix. You are a very talented modeler. I really enjoy the videos you make. I'm glad to see you doing some HO scale modeling. This will be a technique I use for doing roads on my train layout. It's the most realistic way I've seen other than using photographs of road surfaces. That looks good from a distance but you can tell it's a photograph when up close. This is almost concrete, just missing portland cement; so it is real in a way. Just really small. Excellent work and video as always. Stay well. -Wil 👍

Another detail you could add would be section joints. Concrete roads were typically poured in sections, leaving a gridwork of lines once they dried. This could be easily replicated with a steel ruler and an Exacto knife. Also, was there anything on the toothbrush when you were brushing over the cracks, or was that just a dry-brushing technique?
@JeffReiten4 жыл бұрын
Great Idea Steve Cope! gonna do a series of different road stuff may look at including that...Nope nothing on the old toothbrush..takes the plaster down just enough

If this is glued to a 4" x 12" rigid 1/2" plywood shelf with a bracket under it, will it be stable without bits continuing to crack off of it? I do fine art wood sculptures of vintage cars and would love to use this as a base, but it needs to be stable. I'd be willing to construct a shallow wooden edge around it to cover just the edges. Much like the form you poured it into.
@JeffReiten2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael!...It's pretty stable after Painting with acrylics...I have found that if you need it to be more stable a few coats of acrylic flat finish watered down to 33% acrylic flat finish to 66% water really strengthens it up www.amazon.com/AK-Interactive-ultra-matte-varnish/dp/B00KARY7QG or I have even just sprayed it with flat clear coat from the local home improvement store and that hold everything together nice and tight too...Hope that helps!!

@JeffReiten4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marvmensch, Thank You!..I'm using a bag of paver ( quartz ) sand from my local hardware store..the equivalent of beach or river sand in size-then I filter in thru a metal mesh strainer for HO scale..you wouldn't need to strain it for larger scales..you can also use a tea strainer
Is the sand what comes in 50lbs bags at Lowes and used for sandboxes?

@JeffReiten4 жыл бұрын

This is just a superb technique and you're a legend for sharing. I love it when someone has perfected a technique and been generous enough to share the results of their hard-invested time and labour. Really appreciate it. I read you've used River sand here, is that similar to Aquarian? I'm trying to model some badly eroded concrete but the stuff looks to be around 1-3mm. Also would you say hydrocol is defo required or will any gypsum plaster do?
@JeffReiten3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gareth! Thank You!....I use river sand because its so readily available and with a little filtering for size looks very realistic...the main thing to consider is just color and size of the rocks compared to the scale your modeling..for HO or 1:35th scale I do some quick filtering for size from river sand...and for something like N scale I really filter down for very small...when I first started experimenting with this technique I was just rinsing and filtering dirt from my backyard..works well....as far as Hydrocal if you can get some I would recommend it..it adds some useful strength to the mix..Although it does work using regular plaster..adding a little flat acrylic clearcaot or concrete coloring may help strengthen the regular plaster just enough....Hope this Helps and Thanks Again For the Very Nice compliments...Jeff
@garethhudson17823 жыл бұрын
@@JeffReiten hey Jeff! Cheers for the response! We don't really have hydrocal in the UK but a quick search tells me it's just gypsum with a little porter cement so I'll try my own mix together. Nice tip on adding the vanish for strength. I've got a project on the go which requires some battered paving and these eroded, poured concrete cladding slabs for a wall which appear to have some huge chunks in them to away like bubbles. Nearest I could come up with was trying to use plaster and trap actual bubbles in the mix but adding quartz sand and rubbing should do the trick easier and more convincingly. Thanks for putting the effort into this video man, I'm really excited to give it a go.
