I was so upset when Matthew left the show!!!😭😭. Remember my mum saying to me: “Well this is his last episode today”! The tears just streamed down my face. Sooty wasn’t the same after that so I didn’t watch it any more.

I always cried when Matthew retired. I stopped watching Sooty years ago, but he is still the best man to have done the job. Richard was good as well, but Matthew seemed the right fatherly figure.

You got the nail on the head there. He was the fatherly figure we all loved so much. In the current shows where Richard plays the part of a 20s something holiday resort host, that magic doesn't exist. It's always the threat of "Oh no Mr Slaters going to sack me" which isn't really a great example to kids IMO. Must admit though.. he's done well growing younger lol

There will never be another Matthew Corbett. I’m happy I grew up watching the Matthew Corbett era of Sooty on VHS, DVD and KZbin adding to that. He was so funny, entertaining and a true gentleman all in the same when he presented Sooty. A worthy successor to his father, Harry. All of these wonderful moments with Matthew, Sooty, Sweep, Soo and Scampi will forever cherish for generations to come 💛

It sure was sad to see Matthew leaving the show but nothing can last forever, at least he'll always be remembered for his time in the show from 1976-1998. And I'll always prefer him over Richard who is still great, but no one can replace how great Matthew was.

When I was a young boy. My mum and dad bought me a Sooty hand puppet, for my 6th birthday. As I used to like watching it. I never knew what happened to it. 50 years on and I still like to watch the classic episodes. It brings back memories of when my mum and myself would sit on the settee together, with me cuddling up to my mum watch Sooty and Sweep. Miss you mum. xxx

My thoughts exactly. That was a trend with CITV at this time, they'd recently rebranded and they obviously wanted to use their studio as much as they could. It's a shame cause I don't really like this era of CITV, this was when they started to cater towards younger children.

This is how ANY cast changeover SHOULD be done! It introduces viewers to the new cast while saying goodbye to the outgoing ones! If only they did this when Richard O'Brian left The crystal maze and was replaced by Ed tudor pole. I'd of LOVED to see them both in the maze with Richards last team.

I think Richard should have been a regular character in a few more episodes so that the audience could grow to know him and accept him gradually. Then maybe Matthew ease his way out gradually appearing less and less. That would have been nice.. but as usual with cast changes in telly shows, they don't think like that do they. I miss Matthew!

I watched one of the newer episodes of Sooty series 2011 present, maybe it's my age, but I didn't find them as good after Matthew left, he had much more charm. I also don't know if Sooty is as popular on TV there's now millions of channels though, so a lot of shows have become a needle in a haystack.

I didn't see this at the time as I was by then a young adult and at college, but I did watch this a week ago, and I was weeping like a big kid. I grew up watching Sooty as a child and him, Sweep, Soo and Matthew were an important part of my childhood throughout the 80s and into the early 90s. I'm not saying Richard Cadell isn't good at what he does, because I'm glad that he's kept Sooty going and does a good job, but Matthew was most definitely like a father figure type to Sooty and his friends and I do miss that aspect of it. I think a lot of fans do miss Matthew, but I respect his decision as long as he's alright and enjoying his retirement.

I remember watching this and crying at the end when I was a boy. i don't know if this was the first or second showing of the last episode. but it was a good send off for Mathew aka Peter. when they said 'bye bye everyone bye bye" with all the episodes of the last series being shown, i remember thinking that this was the end of sooty. but thankfully it wasn't

Okay I'm gonna come out and say it, I've never watched sooty shows with Matthew when I was a child or Richard and had no intention of watching them, a few weeks ago the very first episode of Sooty and Co and all the other classic episodes of Sooty appeared on my Tik Tok and I was like fine I'll watch it, obviously I had work in the afternoon and I wasn't up for going. I'm now suddenly hooked. I can't bear to watch this episode because before I watched a few episodes with Richard I loved his slapstick comedy but Matthew is so, so different, he's really funny, he's serious, he's like a Father figure and he will always be the best presenter. I just wish I knew him in my early years. He really needs to get tik tok

Yes I don't think the show is as popular now compared to 1990s, also never see as much merchandise around these days compared to back then. I also don't feel the show is as good as this tbh, maybe it's the fact I'm older I don't know. But also I guess now we have millions of channels and CITV no longer is on ITV 1 and Sooty is not aired after school time, I think it's become a needle in a haystack sadly. Richard has presented no where near as many episodes either. Also I read Matthew did the show 1976 to 1998 making 22 years not 25?

If I remember, although Matthew retired, they wanted to keep Sooty going - but over the course of the next few years, they made changes to the concept to try and gain worldwide appeal, but it resulted in the ‘magic’ being lost and the show being dropped. Thanks however to Richard in 2008 buying the rights and taking it back to how it originally was, it is now more popular than ever.

@@cherrypizza Well Matthew Corbett who real name is Peter Corbett had chronic lymphatic leukaemia which was part of the reason also why Matthew Quit looking after sooty back in 1998 , not just hosting it ,but also writing the episode and the songs aswell . So Matthew aka Peter would have carry on being a Presenter on Sooty Heights for a few more years . and Richard Cadell may not be Sooty's right hand man not Just Liana
