SOOTY GROUSE doing his MATING Call

I stop at the top of Towincut Mountain (1249 Metres) and I stepped outside my Jeep and I heard the telltale signs of a Sooty Grouse doing his mating call.
I grabbed my camera and quickly found where he was and was able to get some video of him. Unfortunately, the microphone did not do a great job of picking up the Woot-Woot-Woot sound from him. It is a deep base sound. In the video you can hear it around the 6 minute mark and a little better at the 7 minute mark onward. To me, the call was quite loud. As loud as the other birds you hear chirping/singing in the video. The microphone seems to pick up the higher pitches better.
It is interesting how they puff out their colorful throat as they are doing the call.
I then decided to see how close I could get to him before he flew away. I got quite close.

I have yet to see a Ruffed Grouse drumming in the woods. I'd like to hear and see that! I mostly hear these guys in the woods. I do see lots of Ruffed Grouse on the trails though, but just them flying away😁

I was surprised that he tolerated me being so close. I guess he was busy😁 That's the first time I've seen one so close doing the call. It's too bad that it did not come out as well on the video. He was really loud and a little deeper than on the video. I'm still very happy he gave me the opportunity to observe him😀

Yeah, it was all this guy😁 I wish the microphone could have picked up the sound better. He was so loud and had good bass. I had to crank up the sound in the software to even hear it in the video. I've never been that close to these guys when they're doing their call.

It really is! They are pretty heavy birds too! They are about the same size as a chicken. I couldn't believe that he stayed so close. I got out of the Jeep and I heard the wooting quite close so I dove back in and grabbed my camera-phone and looked for him. The sound on the video unfortunately is not as loud and deep as what he was doing out there. Great to see him and I'm glad I caught it on video. They're out there wooting a lot right now. Looking for love😁😁

They certainly do once the guns start firing at them! I'm glad to see them up there at this time of year. It was amazing that he was so close. You could even see that at one point he looked directly at me and didn't care and went back to calling for a mate😀

I wish the microphone on my cellphone was better. You'd then hear how loud the wooting was and it was deeper. This is the first time I've seen them do this in the wild. I've heard them up in trees, but they were much too far away to see them puff up. I was surprised when at one point he turned and looked right at me and then decided that getting a lady was more important than worrying about me, lol😁

I was amazed that he hung around for me! I had just driven my Jeep up there and got out. I heard his wooting really close. I went back in the Jeep for my cellphone hoping to find him and possibly get a video. I was treated to a great display! I hope he found his girl he was searching for😁 The microphone unfortunately didn't pick up the wooting well. It was a little deeper and much louder in real life.

Thanks, Mike! Decent headphone will help. The "Whoo wooh" that he was making was a little bit deep than was caught on the camera microphone and much louder in person. I think you did get a good representation of the sound though. They puff up skin on their neck while they are making the sound. The feathers move out of the way and then they make the sounds. He was looking for a female.

That was really cool! I heard a Ruffed Grouse once while hiking the Appalachian Trail. I was in a privy at the time and tried to get out in time to find it but it quit. You had a stunning view there as well as seeing the Grouse. Nice!

I haven't heard the drumming of a Ruffed Grouse yet. I'd like to hear and also see that! Too bad you couldn't find your Grouse! This guy here was really cool to see and he was intent on attracting a mate😁 Yeah the view is pretty incredible up there! I've seen some awesome sunsets up there😀

Thanks, Chris😁 I was pretty excited to have him right there deciding to do his mating call! I wish the microphone could have picked up the sound better. He was very loud and the woot was deep. It's great to run into these guys. Earlier in the day, I got out and almost run into a herd of elk. I got some of them on camera, but unfortunately missed a lot of them because I was not prepared with a camera. This grouse was filmed last evening. It was about 8:30PM and starting to get chilly up there on the mountain.

I was really impressed that he decided to stay right there and continue on with his call out! I'm glad I was able to capture it. Yeah, this was the view from the mountain top last evening😁It's one of my favourite places😀 I was going to cook a meal up there, but it was just too darn chilly!

I wish I got the sound better, but you use what you've got when something like this happens by. I've never seen on of these guys doing their call before. I've heard them lots when I've been out, but I've never seen the neck display. These ones like to be higher up in altitude so I guess they enjoy the views up there as well😁

Thanks, Jim😁 It was closer to me than I expected. I'm really happy the cellphone I got in December has a decent zoom on it. The microphone didn't pick up the wooting as well as I would have liked. It was a little deeper and louder. I've seen them up in trees wooting before, but never on the ground and within 10 yards. This was filmed yesterday evening.

I was pretty impressed that it stayed where it was! I had just driven up there with the Jeep and hopped out. I heard the wooting really close so I went back in the Jeep and grabbed my cellphone so I could try and find him and video. It was so close. Too bad the microphone couldn't capture the wooting sound properly. It was still cool to capture the display. I hope he found a girl😁😁

Thanks😁 They usually don't hang around and do mating calls. I was surprised how close the sound was when I got out of my Jeep so I grabbed my phone hoping to find him and get some video. I didn't realise how close he was. It was pretty cool😎
