Wondering about the term "suffragette"- at the US museum i for which i work, we're using "suffragist" only after learning that "suffragette" was a demeaning & mocking term. We thought that was also true in the UK, but perhaps not? Also, are you an interpretive guide and is that a professional designation in the UK? Love your channel, very helpful in identifying popular topics for tourists & such ...and trying to think of appropriate content that intrigues but isnt salacious lol...
@wbfaulk9 ай бұрын
It was coined as a gibe, but they adopted it enough that the WSPU newspaper was entitled "The Suffragette". "Suffragist" is an older word and not incorrect, though, if less precise.

'Suffragettes' and 'Suffragists' were contemporary, and often opposing groups. The stated aim of Suffragettes were "Votes for Ladies" not "Votes for Women". See Crystabel and Sylvia Pankhurst.

@SAOS4513169 ай бұрын
Police brutality is much older than the police as you know them today. Whether they be victorian coppers, private guards, medieval men-at-arms, Roman legionnaires, or some guy with a big stick in a stone age village, jobs that give you power over the average person attract cruel people. In the UK the police evolved from the private guards of the nobility and in the US they evolved from slave catcher patrols.

@@scarletempress2652I worked in the Clothing Trade with Sikhs (and Hindus) here in London for a good number of years. They all belonged to the same caste and all looked down on lower castes. @@bycromwellshelmet2369 I mean sure, but I do know plenty of charitable Christians sooo. I think it’s fair to say you didn’t exactly interact with a representative sample. I mean there’s a quiet a few Sikhs who are untouchables for starters. Besides this is about Sofia Duleep Singh’s ‘admirers’ (I assume you are talking about modern people today who like her, right?) apparently not caring about untouchables. Which kinda comes out of nowhere? It seems just a bit bitter tbh. I mean do you have any proof she herself had caste-based prejudices? Like I’d be interested in hearing them if you do.

After the Indian Mutiny the British Government siezed control of the East India Company's holdings, judging them unfit to continue without supervision
@Stand6639 ай бұрын
@@dragon12234 What mutiny was this. ? There were many princely states kingdoms and empires headed by various tribes and their maharajas. ? The East India company traded with most of them, even employing seepoys (Indian officers and men). If there was a mutiny it must have been over religious sensitivities as many Indians of different faiths had historically not learnt to coexist together, that is until the British introduced a parliamentary democratic system, where all issues could be peacefully resolved etc. Yes monumental task but they got there in the end.
@dragon122349 ай бұрын
@StandUPlz this specific one was the Indian rebellion of 1857-1858, which started when a rumor amongst the Indian Sepoys (native soldiers working for the British), that the paper cartridges they used had been made using pork fat. Which caused many of them to be outraged as pork was forbidden according to the religious beliefs of many of the soldiers (the process of loading the gun involved biting the cartridge open). This mutiny then swept up many of the local princes and the like that wanted to throw out the British. The rebellion was eventually defeated, but the British Empire had to step in themselves, as the East India Company and their local allies failed to deal with it on their own. And remember, the East India Company was nominally a private corporation, not a formal part of the British government
@scarletempress26529 ай бұрын
@@Stand663You clearly know nothing about the history here. “What mutiny?” What are you on? If you knew anything about the history of Britain in India you would know about that.

@@scarletempress2652 There was a Seepoy mutiny within the ranks over religious sensitivities I acknowledged it. There’s was also conflict against many different hostile tribes where British and Sikh regiments fought battles. The British were foes or allies depending on which tribe you were.
