All my life, old people singing and dancing have been my idea of the ultimate in entertainment, and if they can tell a joke and not mangle the punch line, I think they're comic geniuses. But Sophie Tucker was as old as vaudeville and singing rock around the clock. Priceless

She’s the remnants of Vaudeville. Those movie palaces were first vaudeville House’s. They only had 35 ft stages from the proscenium arch to the rear wall. She’s indeed adapted her Act for the modern audience. This dame is the bomb.

Something not well-known is that Sophie Tucker, in the first decade of the last century, pretty much invented the nightclub act. She was not (who would ever guess?) a blushing flower when it came to furthering her career. She made a deal so that after her stage/vaudeville performances, she would go to the famous Reisenweber's, and do a show that was impromptu, treating the audience informally as her guests, rather than doing a fixed presentational act. She had her issues, but she was tremendously important to the development of show business. Isn't Ed Sullivan's obvious affection and regard for her touching?

@@monitortop Yes, he is. He was such a lurch, but handsome once. TV was in many ways, the offshoot of Vaudeville. Lucy & Desi Arnez Acts we’re pure variety.
