Dear Sophie, I use to work for Chanel and Giorgio Armani, in the 1990’s, we were obligated to be serious with everybody, in Nice France, one day a man walked in Chanel in teeshirt, shorts and vans, no watch, nothing to show if he could buy something or was just looking, I walked up to him and started to help him, he started to say he would love to buy a classic bag for his girlfriend, I showed him, than he asked for a Chanel jacket, after one hour he had purchased a whole summer wardrobe for his girlfriend, he payed with the black credit card, lots of bags to walk away with, so I proposed to walk with him to his car, he answered that was very kind of me, his chauffeur was waiting on the end of the road with a Rolls-Royce! Just to say never judge a monk by his habit! I have so many anecdotes about the time I worked there, love your videos Sophie! 💋💋

My mother went into a high end jewelry store looking for another bracelet. She was wearing all designer from head to toe, but in her own style so like $250 distressed jeans n tee, slouchy sweater, custom clogs (she's a well paid nurse). She was ignored by all salespersons in the store so she left n went to the one next door. She bought herself a $3200 Movado watch n that salesperson got a really good commission all bc the other store thought she looked like she couldn't buy anything.

About the 1st point: my mom does exactly the opposite. She once went to a luxury store in sweatpants and flipflops. One of the SA literally rolled their eyes at her and walked away... Mom spent thousands on the store with the SA that was kind and nice to her. If you're a salesperson, keep in mind that some people that have a lot of money like to dress down when shopping because they like to see how they'll be treated. My mom and her other rich friends never dress up. One of her friends always says that people that treats her badly doesn't deserve her money.

I would say dress appropriately, not above or below what’s normally worn to go shopping in your country. Looking like a vagrant just to test an SA is not fair since their reaction would be to protect the experience for other shoppers. It’s like when homeless come up to people seated in outdoor restaurants, and the management has to quietly ask them to leave so they don’t bother or their scent does not ruin the experience for people eating.

So true. I need to dress up for work so I don't want to in my free time. It's also one of the reasons to love Las Vegas. I bought a Gucci bag wearing shorts and flip flops, but the sales person helped me perfectly. I actually asked why she came to me and not to the other people who were there. Turns out they look at jewelry and watches and sure enough I was wearing a very niece Cartier.

I went into Dior in Selfridges Manchester a few years ago. I went in dressed up but with a slightly scuffed up non-brand bag, and just said I was looking for my first designer bag. And while I had made it clear I wasn't going to make a purchase that day, the SA still gave me the full experience; she let me try on bags, sunglasses, let me hold earrings up in front of the mirror, gave me a tea we enjoyed together while she told me about the brand and brand history, gave me the full catalogue in the nice carrier bags they do,.. absolutely gorgeous experience! And it was my first time going into a luxury boutique. 10/10 would recommend.

Former car salesperson here - I always dress down when I shop big luxury if I don't know anyone. I want to give the sale to the person that cared enough to check in regardless of appearance (not trashy dressing down, but normal jeans/ shirt & a nice leather bag that isn't name brand). I remember how other sales ppl could be super judgy and I use to make commission big time on all the people the other sales ppl ignored.

You are so ready right. My husband is retired and dresses casually. We were ignored for 45 minutes at a luxury dealership. The lowest person on the sales staff was finally very nice to us. We bought an suv for cash. Rich people don’t always want to advertise their wealth.

Absolutely agree with you. I remember finally pulling the trigger on an expensive apartment after thinking about it for weeks, while I was grocery shopping with my husband. It was in the middle of the summer, we were both wear t shirt, shorts and flip flops. Also carrying a few bags of groceries. The only property agent that approached us, we’ve stuck with him for the next 10 years for all of our property transactions until he changed job.

Yep. I mean, I've gone to the store right after work in my scrubs have been helped and haven't had issues--but I know others haven't had that and it shouldn't matter, but it's sad that people are still judged.

I'm a SA for a very major luxury brand and I agree with allll of these (and the ones in your NEVER do this - video). Don't ever be scared to walk into a store if you are nice and well behaved, doesn't matter if you are buying or not. It's totally ok to windowshop BUT be aware that your SA works for commission so don't spend hours and hours at the store making your sales person run around getting you things to try on if you don't intend on purchasing. It may sound mean but the idea is not that we don't wanna help you, it's more that we're making 0$ while our colleagues next to us might reach their monthly/daily targets which in the end makes us look bad. It's impossible to tell you an exact time frame how long you can take up someone's time without buying anything but I would say try and make your visit not longer than 20-30 minutes max, get the SA's contact and then if you have further questions, contact them back. Also please don't be rude when asking for things: "bring me these in a size 5"/"show me the blue bag" is very different from "could you bring me these in a size 5 please?"/"could I see the blue bag over there?" When trying on things, PLEASE be careful. We want to be able to sell them after. We don't have a "try on pair" for shoes for example. Some people try on 10 different pairs and walk around in them in the store and then ask for a brand new pair that no one has ever worn... sadly it doesn't work like this (ofc you should always check for defects but be aware that sometimes you trying them on might have left some marks at the sole or the leather etc and we will want to sell you "your" pair therefore). The biggest point of all is that I would literally bend over backwards and do ANYTHING for clients that are nice and respectful. I get just as excited as you when the whole interaction goes well and I can see that I'm making you happy.

A few months ago, I went to a Gucci store because I wanted to see a bag or 2 in person. After having a look at those and pointing out a few things I didn't like about the bag (not in a bitchy way) lifestyle wise, the SA wanted to show me more things that she thought I might like. It made me feel bad because it was a busy Saturday and I didn't want to make her waste her time since I was sure I was not going to buy anything.

I went into Louis Vuitton for the first time, in leggings and black crop top, absolutely nothing fancy, and a cheap bag. I went in to see what I’d like for my first luxury purchase. I wanted to see the speedy, but really just wanted an every day bag. The SA was AMAZING. He gave me so much information and was even so honest to the point of really knocking certain items in order to guide me to the right bag for me. He pulled SO many bags for me and gave me the pros and cons of each. I walked away with a bag in mind and his card. I went back that evening and purchased it from my SA as he was just so incredibly helpful for my first time in a luxury shop. It made for such a great experience

I worked in luxury handbags at Saks in Boston when Prada was raging hot, and it was often the customers who dressed down who spent the most! One of my best customers was a Boston blue book who would come in her gardening clothes (she owned a townhouse with a garden terrace). To her, luxury shopping was such a mundane, everyday experience she didn’t need to dress up for it. But if you watched her leave the store, she got into a town car with a driver!

I'm an SA in a furniture shop, and I occasionally have customers apologising for being annoying when they ask for different colours/different sizes/more information/a refund/can't make up their minds immediately. My go-to answer is ALWAYS that "as long as you're nice, you're never annoying".

I have a story about the dress up thing. Me and my husband were looking for his suit for our wedding that time. At first we went to Armani. It was summer in Abu Dhabi it was really hot my husband was wearing short jeans and tshirt. I have tshirt and jeans. No one from the staff approached us. We asked but they just point to us where to look then left. We got so annoyed so we went to Dolce & Gabbana. The sales person who assisted us went far beyond our expectation. So we ended up buying the suit from them. We came back to Armani to see if they will still snob us but since we have a huge bag from D&G the staff came to my husband. I don’t really understand that. We didn’t buy anything from them.

Had a great experience with two Burberry stores in London on the same day. First went to the Covent Garden one just to browse. Saw a beautiful coat and the SA was so lovely, attentive and helpful. Tried it on and found I needed a smaller size which unfortunately they didnt have in store. They offered to order one in for me but I asked if they could check if their other stores in the area had it because I really wanted to get it that day. They checked and said the Regent Street store had the size. Went over there and was served by a wonderful SA called Jamie. Got the whole 'experience' as you say. Ended up buying the coat and a scarf too and whenever I look at the items, I always think of that day. Had a not so great experience at Louis Vuitton in Westfield where the staff were so non-attentive, not even a greeting when entering the store. Had planned on getting a few items but I just turned around and left. Instead, got the items when I went to LV in Las Vegas. The service there was beyond exceptional and myself and my partner went in there very dressed down (shorts, t-shirt nd trainers) but still got the 'experience'. The SA even invited us to come back in the evening and watch the Bellagio fountains from their private terrace with champagne.

I’ve been really impressed actually in the designer shops that have gone into Fendi, Valentino etc. I’ve not been dressed up at all but the sales associates have stuck with me even though other clients who looked extremely wealthy walked in after me. They stayed showing me around, they didn’t leave me to go and help the other people and they gave me their full attention and I have to say I really appreciate it.

For those who are saying they don't dress up to shop luxury - it's not about whether you DO or DO NOT, the point being made is that SA's WILL judge you on how you're dressed. What you want to do with that information is up to you. I used to work in high end retail, and the majority of the time, the clients who came in looking sloppy and underdressed were the rudest, most demanding people who NEVER made a purchase. I had clients from all rangest of economic backgrounds - the "just looking" casual tourists; the strippers and brothel workers who paid in cash; the gamblers looking to spend their winnings. All the way up to the billionaire Asian buisness men and women. No, you can't judge someone's ability to spend based on appearance, but you can judge the likelyhood on how they will treat service staff by the consideration with which they have treated their own appearance, regardless of designer lables or not.

Because I’ve had so many bad experiences with customer service in luxury stores, I purposely wear the drabbiest clothes, hair in a bun, etc, when I go buy something. I want the person who looks beyond that and still gives good customer service to get the commission .

I went to Gucci for the first time today and made my first purchase with them. I knew what I wanted and it made the experience so much easier. At the boutique I went to, they had me scan a QR code in my phone and I made my profile. At the end, it allowed me to save my SAs contact info directly into my phone. It was fantastic! Also agree about dressing up if you’ve never bought from that store before. It shouldn’t be that way but I was treated so nicely compared to when I was in jeans and t shirt at LV.

The first point is funny. I went to a luxury department store recently dressed up in leggings, winter parka, and sneakers. I didn’t wear my luxury bag on that day. The SA was super helpful and gave me great service, didn’t hesitate to show me bags and let me touch them, etc. As I was leaving, I saw an old friend in the distance also shopping at the department store. It was interesting because she was dressed up in her best clothes, and I know she never dresses that way. I feel like people play up a personality/look just because they’re at a luxury store and it feels try-hard. Let’s be real, I want to be taken seriously regardless of what I’m wearing. I myself know I’m going to buy.

the defect one really got me - i was so excited for my first chanel bag that i just looked over the slightly wonky flap just because it was the only one they had and it was reserved for me. i don’t really regret it because i love it that much but it does dampen the memory and the whole experience in general which is a shame.

Hi Sophie. I am not shy and I can walk in as if I´d be entering my own home. You are right, it is good manners to be polite and that applies both to the client and the salesperson. It should make no difference, where you are. Chanel or Marks or Spencers, rude manners are really clearly showing your background and character.

Someone saw me and invited me in (I was in jeans and a white shirt) I declined after thanking them as there was nothing I could buy there but I enjoyed the experience. Thanks Sophie I’ve found these helpful. It helps to dress up in an authentic way, so my idea of looking dressed up may be different from others and vice versa. Sometimes I wear my designer items in boutiques since that’s where I feel comfortable wearing them, whether or not anyone notices them. I don’t dress up to try flashing brands or pretend to be someone I’m not, I’d wear something similar to a brunch or nice restaurant. I agree, it doesn’t hurt to ask for a drink, especially when thirsty. The sales associate should offer, but I don't mind helping them out and they may appreciate it if they may have simply forgotten. This was really good. I always dress nicely when I go shopping because that’s the way I was brought up. I so often heard my mother and my aunt say to me, “get dressed up we are going shopping.” And it was really fun. So all these years later I still do it, whether I am going to Gucci or Target, it doesn’t matter. I dress. I had a bad experience in LV a few years ago and I walked out feeling totally deflated. Dior happens to be next door and there was nobody in there so I went in. I asked to see some Lady Diors because at that point I was retiring in 3 years and it was going to be my retirement present to self. They were really excited about it and treated me like a princess even though they knew I wasn’t buying that day. It’s now only 1 year away and they so impressed me that the day it happens and I get my hands on the cash I will be straight into Dior for my Lady.

Why most of the KZbinrs never talk about staff from Versace. Did I miss something about this brand? I was once at An Hermes Store in Germany. I must confess I was very afraid of entering the store. The SA was very friendly, she realized that I love Dishes of bone china. She showed them to me and my Partner, offered to touch the decor and asked if we would like to take some catalogues home. We said yes and got a Hermes Bag with the catalogues with a ribbon. When we left the shop, my partner told me to look now in other shops how the SA there would react to us. And in the next shop, they ignored people in front of us and came directly to us. That was very strange.

I love to shop luxury and I do like to dress up for a shopping day. But sometimes I am popping in to grab something and was wearing my sweats from the gym. It was incredibly interesting... one store treated me like I was in head to toe Chanel (even though I was in grey sweats) and other SA just looked and sneared at me. I was curious why? Yes that’s the point. I think it’s so special to feel good about yourself (after all we all love fashion) and having an excuse to wear our lovely things and maybe put a little curl in our hair and a touch of mascara + a spritz of a favorite perfume. However, sometimes we literally do just want to pop in to ‘buy a belt for an upcoming trip’ for example and on those occasions we don’t want to be treated any differently. I cannot fault the customer service in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. It’s very much first come first serve and I’ve never seen profiling. The SAs are wonderful in that way. There are people here with a truly dizzying amount of money but the SA will help you through to completion without any indication of impatience before moving on to help anyone else, regardless of how rich they might be.

My family always comes with me to luxury stores when I have something particular in mind, especially for jewelry. One place that has impressed me is Tiffany's. On each visit, I am always helped by a different SA, all are helpful and polite. The first one was a genuinely friendly lady who made me and my family at ease and welcome. Unfortunately, she has moved on but is the reason I don't hesitate to be a repeat customer. On another visit, we did get the full treatment - a happy surprise for "regular" folk like us. Another good experience is Cartier where the SA spoke so respectfully with my husband and I. Not once did we feel that we did not belong.

My husband was in car sales for many years and he would agree with everything you’re saying. Sales people do tend to prequalify based on how you’re dressed, your handbag, accessories, watches, etc. This is not always the case as you’ve said but it may get you the attention you need. We’ve also been on a Rolex mission which right now are very hard to come by. My husband has actually told me to make sure I take one of my luxury handbags when we go to the stores. It sounds terrible to say but the salespeople will take you more seriously if they think you’ve got money to spend. That’s just the way people think and when they’re working on commission they have to make their time productive.

I have to say that the single best thing I ever did for myself before setting foot inside a luxury boutique is: my research. I knew all about the bags in question (in a theoretical sense, obv), I knew what colors they came in, I knew a little something about the brand in general and where their design had been and was going. Even though I was dressed fairly casual, with nothing fancier than a Longchamp Le Pliage on my arm, the SAs were incredibly sweet and helpful and gave me their contact details. Nowhere was this more true than at Celine, which might've been the last place I would have expected such warm treatment.

Experience in a boutique matters. I will never set foot in a Burberry again ever after they had security follow me around and tried to look at my leather coat to see if I'd stolen it from them. It wasn't even one of theirs... I'd made an appointment with one of their SAs for a certain time and when I came, they said he wasn't there and attempted to shoo me away. I insisted and magically the 3 coats he'd set aside appeared. While I was trying them I saw them peeking at my leather jacket and talking to one of the security people. The coats didn't fit so I looked at a few of the others but I was being followed. I had had enough and went to grab my jacket from the sofa and the one fellow had the cheek to quiz me about where it was from. It was not friendly interest. Appalling behaviour.

A few years ago me and my husband paid harrods a visit (we are from manchester) we were with my 1 year old and I wanted to buy a bag as a treat, didn't have anything in mind but I knew I was looking for something from either Saint laurent or Celine. We go to gucci and I'm browsing some bags, an SA comes over and asks us if we need any help? To which I reply it's OK I'm just browsing, he then turns around and says to my husband "oh too expensive is it" to which me and my husband were absolutely gob smacked! He made us feel utterly judged and worthless, baring in mind this was my husbands first ever trip to harrods and he left traumatised. I have found the selfridges in Manchester you never get judged and the treatment is far better then what you recieve in London

Just saw your other video about what not to do. To be honest, I've done my fair share of shopping these big designers and went through more mediocre than good or bad experiences but lately I've become exhausted of this rat race, this game, and all of these rules. It's exhausting and frankly makes me resentful of the brands and the sales people. Why am I putting myself through this and paying for the agony. I always end up feeling like half winner and half sucker when I leave with a purchase. But I also blame myself and society for getting caught up so much in material goods---moderation and less makes things so much better.

I went to a Chanel boutique in Orlando, FL in regular jeans and a flannel, dressed well but nothing fancy. The SA was super sweet and showed me a couple of the different bags I was interested in seeing in person. It did help that I knew what bags I was interested in and she brought the ones they had available out for me to try out

Hope that's ok". and I received positive response everytime. At least they will know what to expect (or not to) and won't feel like they have wasted their time at the end. Also, it helps to have some knowledge of what you are planning to buy - which collection, size, preference..etc.. that helps with starting the conversation with the SA.

Hi Sophie, I completely agree with you about checking the item carefully in store. It happened to me twice at dior and saint laurent where I was excited and trusted the quality of these particular brands so didn’t check the details as much as I should have. Both times I had to exchange for new bags and the experiences were not great. I’d always make sure to the items carefully, and walk away if there are flaws that I can’t tolerate. These luxury items are unfortunately not always well made.

Totally agree with the Dior service. I have that last week and was my first. I am so hesitant entering the store, although it looks very inviting from the window. I lack that confidence to step inside. I just feel so overwhelmed by the glamour. And last week, I decided but wow, the service was really amazing. I don't have any luxury stores near me to develop a relationship with an SA. I shop when traveling and my attire is more casual. I have asked for cards at places I have shopped at before...a few have been responsive when I have asked to order. But it is difficult to keep that relationship. I had worked at a jewelry store through college and had a gentleman that looked like he rolled around in the yard. He left the house straight away after working in the yard to surprise his wife with a Rolex and 4-carat diamond earrings. I had a great sale that day. The gentleman was so appreciative because the "popular jewelry store" in our town the salespeople wouldn't wait on him. I never judged anyone now as you don't know what is going on in their life.

Thanks for your video, Sophie. So true. When I walk into the Chanel shop and wear my boots and flap, I get a different treatment than when I wear non brand shoes and bag. It is sad but it it true. They profile you. Having said that, I walked into Hermès store and had an amazing SA who sold me a scarf. I wasn’t wearing any Hermès things as I don’t have one. I was just wearing non brand shoes and bag.

The point about making sure everything fits properly can never be said enough. I had the choice between the small and large versions of the last bag I purchased and I got the small without measuring because it was so cute; now when I have all my stuff in it the bag is ever so slightly stretched out so that you don’t notice from far away however it’s clearly visible up close and it’s shortening the lifespan of the apple leather bag I spent weeks saving for. 💔

I bought a Mulberry bag from Bicester Village outlet, knowing that most of the outlet items will have some sort of flaw, so I looked at the bag in a lot of detail (all the stitching, zips etc) but I missed a dent on the turn lock! 😂 But that might just be me being silly 🤦🏻‍♀️ xx

Thank you Sophie. I knew you were talking to me when you talked about not feeling worthy to even go into a boutique. I looked into your eyes and felt so comforted. Whether I buy anything or not, I would love to just go feel a bag and look inside of it. If I were a smaller size, I would love to try on some clothes to check to see how it fits. You can't tell how something fits by ordering it online, a good try on is the only way to tell. Especially for larger dimensions. I do wish designers would cater to larger sizes. I am a 14 bottom in American sizes and an extra large in tops or a size 16 in American. I know they go by numbers like 26 or 28. Do you have any suggestions of designer brands that would fit a larger woman? That might be a great video.

It’s funny how you describe Dior cuz I totally relate but for me, it was Cartier. When I first started buying luxury I was nervous to go inside these stores, I remember I had a horrible experience in a LV in Paris. Anywho I walked into a Cartier boutique and they treated me so good. I always feel like a princess when I go into Cartier and I always associate the place with feeling great and happy.

I totally agree! I am not ever intimidated going into boutiques, but I have to admit, I was a tiny bit apprehensive going into Cartier in Dubai. They could not have been friendlier, kinder, or more helpful. I bought my watch there, and have a lovely memory of the store/sales experience. It does make a huge difference. LV can really be hit and miss. They need to train their staff to be friendlier… so it’s not just a transactional feeling. Chanel store in Dubai mall is the worst customer service I’ve ever had in a luxury store. So unfriendly, dismissive and exceptionally rude that I ended up paying more for the same item when I returned to Ireland, because I didn’t want to give those staff my custom. I went again when I returned to Dubai, and it was just as bad as I had remembered. It costs nothing to be nice. I will leave an item I want behind if the customer service is subpar. I have also made a point of leaving positive feedback to the store or company, when the service has been wonderful. I don’t think people do that enough. Much quicker to explain. They are always so delighted to receive the positive feedback from management.

Hi! I think it depends on where you are, state, country etc... The first time I purchased from Louis Vuitton near me, NY, I was wearing Addidas sweats and sweatshirt. I do that on purpose. I do carry a designer bag. Usually, a mini of some sort. Maybe next time I will wear a no name bag and see what happens. I find it funny that people try to impress SA. I won't do that. If I'm going into a designer store it's usually with the intension to buy and I already know what I'm looking for. I wont jump through hoops for any item. I had my first experience at YSL and I felt extremely important and comfortable once he realized it was my first time and my favorite brand. It was such a relaxing no pressure experience. Highly recommend to just be yourself ❤.

I often shop at Selfridges or Harrods which are almost London tourist attractions and people go to them just to be there (perhaps Selfridges more than Harrods). So I’ve found that SAs in those shops tend to be more helpful no matter what you wear because people could be on holiday in their travel clothes but have millions in the account. On the flip side, as a Londoner I’ve found that ‘dressing up’ slightly when I go into them has helped me get spotted by a SA because there is that signal to them, as you discussed.

Oh, Sophie! This reminds me of the first time I went to Chanel to look at a Coco Handle. I didn’t know the name of it at the time but I saw one in a chevron pattern in a teal color at Harrods whilst shopping with my then bf whom I was visiting. When I came back home to the States I went to my closest boutique (I wasn’t dressed up at all) and I received no service whatsoever. The girls were rude and essentially ignored me. I went back once afterwards (a nicer SA helped me) but it still left a bad taste in my mouth haha. I absolutely adore Dior and their customer service is amazing! I now only invest my money in Dior and other houses, though I still really want a Coco handle lol. I also want to add, have you looked at Coach lately? They released a Rogue Top Handle and it is so cool with the leather chain strap! They have not released it in the US though I do see that they have it online in the UK and Japan at the moment. I might order one from Japan, but I thought it might be interesting to you. :) And thank you for the video Sophie! Another tip is go to stores just to browse. Especially if you feel kind of intimidated by going to boutiques and because at the end of the day the SA's are there to make sales. You can end up feeling pressured to make a purchase (you maybe didn't want 100%) to feel worthy of being there. But if you go there just to browse first it will be a more "normal" environment for you when you do go there to spend money and seeing the items in person and having time to reflect on them will give you a much better understanding of what you actually like and want.

I would not recommend dressing up or carrying very expensive items - based on my experience. I went to a few stores (LV, Hermes) with a Kelly bag, reasonably dressed with the idea of buying something reasonably priced (Alma BB or something similarly priced, enamel Hermes bracelet etc.). I'm until today harassed with offers to see their new collection of clothes or buy a table for like £20k. At no point I gave a hint I'm in position to purchase RTW or the table.

I am always polite in luxury stores and had great experience in Toronto DIOR. However Chanel store in Toronto is a different story. SA’s are usually not helpful at all and I left several times because I did not feel comfortable there even with my Chanel bag on my shoulder. When I was in Vienna this last summer I went into LV with a button down shirt, nice shorts, Fendi sandals and Dior bag and the SA was so rude and dismissive. I left and went to Gucci were I got fantastic service and a new bag. The first time I ever went to Dior I said to the SA, something like, “I’m not going to buy anything today but I love Dior and have never seen a Dior bag in person. Would you mind showing me some bags?” She was so wonderful. I’ve always got the most amazing service In boutiques with friendly and helpful SA’s except at LV in Vienna.
