I don't agree with brands selling shoes that you pay good price on it and then you need to take to a cobbler to put the soles in, for me it looks like I'm buying an unfinished product. If is something necessary to use then they should sell them with it already

I hope someone find this useful. I used to work in a luxury shoes company. The reason why designer shoes are fully made in leather as in with insole and the sole of the shoes is because after a few wears it moulds to the shape of your foot. Once it has stretch to the shape of your foot, it is strongly advisable to take them to the cobbler to protect the soles. The shoes is then super comfortable. Believe me, I used to work 8 hrs a day in 9cm heels and it was manageable. If I wore cheap shoes, esp not leather, it will cut or blister me and the insole would be very sweaty. If it is leather, it absorbs the moisture which can be replaced by a good cobbler. Another thing is never wear leather soles shoes in the rain. It becomes super slippery too... A common perception is that because it cost a lot, it should last for ages. It cost a lot because of the craftsmanship, the material, most Italian factory close for a month in August and have good welfare to staff and environment and if it is a super brand than yes , you are paying for that logo too. Unless the shoes are faulty, the customer still need to look after the shoes as you can scrape the leather on escalators and cobbled streets...

And also at Louboutin they told me that you should wear them a tiny bit ( but oc not when it's wet outside!) before putting the sole on, bc it will stick a lot better. But in some countries Louboutin themselves are doing this for you, so you wear them a bit and then they sent your shoes to a cobbler of their trust. However, if you only wear them on carpet and other soft grounds you absolutely don't have to get them soled, since the leather is still choosen with the purpose to walk on it...but for everyday use, where you sometimes have to walk on more rough or humid surfaces it is still recommended to put that extra protection on top!

Great tips! I'm a fashion archivist and the tips about bag storage are spot on. I would highly recommend storing bags with a specially made insert/cushion which doesn't contain foam. You can buy ones made for specific styles of luxury bags. If you go for tissue paper make sure it's unbleached and that you replace it regularly as both the bag, and whatever material you use inside it to keep it's structure, will off-gas and can cause discolouration or marks. Also it always irks me when people complain about the red soles wearing on Louboutins. If you buy luxury items you should also be investing in their preventative care!

Also do not EVER spray waterproofer on metallic leathers. The reason metallic leather needs a bit more care is because you cannot really dye leather metallic. You dye it a similar colour first and then you apply a metallic finish over top, once it's got a deep scratch and you can see the under colour of the bag theres no fixing it really. You could only get it re-dyed metallic overall which even then doesn't always look good or the same.

My 15 years experience in luxury goods and selling said ‘unsuitable soles’ would say otherwise. Sorry but just as an example, Men’s Church shoes most commonly have a leather sole. You’ll get at least 4+ years with heavy wear. At which point they can be entirely re-soled or partially done at the original factory. Same with Jimmy Choo. What I can assure you is with any luxury brand, as soon as you take those shoes to a third party cobbler and then go back to the brand with the shoe, any warranty or responsibility for the shoe is now on you, and completely void from the brand. But what do I know, I only sell these shoes for a living 🤷♀️

I read a comment where it was asked what to insert in a bag to keep its shape. For one, you will have a musty smell in your bag when you are in a high humidity area or your leather goods are stored close to/in a high humidity cabinet. The tissue paper works well as inserts for your bag when you are or your goods are stored in a dry area (I usually insert those perfume scent samples that came with stores brochure inside my purse). A cabinet that is near a shower or bathroom is prone to high humidity. This creates the stickiness in your leather goods, creates mold and damages your goods permanently. It is better to store your goods as far away as possible from the shower/bathroom. If you have no alternative drier location, run a portable heater once in a while to keep the moisture down. Also, save those silica gels you received with your packages and place one inside the bag (place one in the inner pockets, too) and one on each shelf where your goodies are stored. If you have a nice cup or glass that you are not using, you can fill it with a (dry) cup of rice and place that cup of rice in your storage area. That should absorb the moisture in-between the times that you will run your heater. Caveat: the rice should not be a replacement to running your heater to dry your storage area. Also, check the cup of rice every time you run your heater. If the rice color and smell changed (please use any white rice), make sure to replace it immediately. That is a warning sign that there is too much humidity in the room and time for you to inspect ALL of your luxury bags inside and out. Well, I hope this helps. Thank you Sophie for your tips. As always, you are a ray of sunshine. Stay safe & blessed everyone!

Hi, Sophie! I don’t know if I missed this, but if you don’t use tissue (I’ve used acid free tissue) or bubble wrap, what DO you use to firm up and retain shape in those bags that need an assist? Thanks! Always look forward to your tips!

Hi there, acid free tissue is the best, the curators use it to store period garments - could can find lots of info on You Tube btw. You should buy acid free tissue paper in bulks, I do :-), then wrap each handle separately and if the bag has got a chain wrap the chain separately too, if the chain is resting on the bag make sure it is wrap separately in tissue paper. replace the tissue paper regularly and while doing inspect the bags and ventilate them for a day or too. take care xxxCW

Bom dia If I may give you a suggestion, about vernis, someone at Prada told me to wrap the item and every single extra (handles, straps, zipper, chain...) wit tissue paper or cotton cloth, so it wouldn’t stick or transfer. About the small cracks over the coated canvas or leather, ou sales associate at Ferragamo said that applying every now and then a light layer of body moisturiser (the simplest one)... here in Sao Paulao - Brazil - she recommended Nivea’s body milk. All is bizarre but actually works LOL! Beijos

Boy bag can't go inside Classic flap only 90% inside you still need to put something between the leather and chain

I bought some thick felt on eBay and chopped it up to sit in between the leather and the chain of my Chanel bags and that works really well.

The boy chain can go inside. You pull it over the flap then tuck it inside, or if you manoeuvre it only the leather will be on the outside and the chain will be inside.

Great & useful video 👍🏽| Only one snag: U say what NOT to stuff ur bags with = The tissue they come with or bubble wrap. But u don't say what u COULD use 😅 | For what it's worth, I'd suggest any kind of natural or natural / synthetic blend fabric. Eg: Inexpensive cotton Face Flannels bought at a Pound Shop. Or old or faded T-shirts that have been washed first. If one has a particular issue with damp in the house, then a sachet of Silica Gel per bag, (and lodged within the stuffing), will generally be sufficent to absorb any moisture 👜💥

I really respect anyone who uses their expensive purchases. Even if they become a bit worn, it’s nice to see them being loved and appreciated. The temptation is to hoard them and never dare to use them and then years later, you feel like you missed out! I suppose they are a good investment and can be resold but money can’t bring joy the way enjoying an item can...

Thanks Sophie for sharing the tips & bad experiences on storing your bags especially on the paper & bubble wrap stuffings ... I guessed mostly importantly we have to try to clean and maintain the bags after every use and check them once in 1-2 months in their closets... additionally I feel it’s good to rotate all the bags often . I hope it helps 😘

I’ve waited and didn’t put a rubber sole on new Stuart Weitzman ankle boots right away and I did damage the soft leather on the tip of the shoe. Shoe cobbler prices are way cheaper in the UK. It was about $40 in the US for soles but well worth protecting the shoe. A rubber sole and a heel redo is $90. It’s way cheaper in the UK. Excellent idea Sophie to check in on unused stored handbags.
@FionaHedgecock3 жыл бұрын
The exact same thing happened to me with Stuart Weitzman ankle boots - I didn't know to get the cobbler to protect the pointy tips underneath, and to my horror, the existing sole tips actually came off, leaving a kind of canvas textile lying bare. However, the cobbler successfully rescued them and I've now had them for about 18 years! I bought the matching handbag, which is patent leather like the boots, but with a soft, black suede front flap, which has got a bit dirty looking. Has anybody any tips on how to clean this - I tried rubbing with bread, as someone advised, but it didn't help?

I actually got color transfer from my Gucci Sukey From the dust bag itself. never noticed it until I went to sell it , was thoroughly inspecting it and was horrified to see it! Also yes using a warm hairdryer can absolutely get creases out of Chanel lambskin. I purchased a bag from Fashionphile and the way they sent it was atrocious they sent it in too small of a box with the handles tucked smooshed down on either side and the box got wet in transit so there were deep creases in my bag I was so upset to see this and they didn’t give a dang! I searched frantically on how to remove the creases and the hairdryer trick worked beautifully you cannot see them anymore. I like to use old sweaters rolled up or T-shirts to hold the shape of my bags. But now I’m definitely going to check on all my bags just in case thank you for the reminder. !!!!

I actually have my old sweaters T-shirts clean of course and very clean folded pieces of white sheets that are well worn but clean so basically nice folded pieces of cloth that keeps the bag shape it’s a great sustainable use of textiles in your home that you don’t know what to do with and you can always launder them from time to time to keep everything smelling nice and fresh Also try to match the lining of the bag so if it’s black use black fabric if it’s a lighter color make sure not to use dark colors so there’s no dye transfer.
