Hollywood in a nutshell. Really, almost any shitty social or society behavior can be attributed to that infernal place in one way or another. Don’t agree? Pick a spoiled shithead with a lot of name recognition and a fair amount of scandal to their name, trace their interests, inspirations, and background, and you’ll likely find a Hollywood connection somewhere in that tangled web at least half the time-probably closer to 2/3 or more. Hollywood is the worst.

Originally Flint didn’t have a father, and the creators realized the film lacked proper heart. It being so late in production and all the assets done, they made Tim, who was originally just another resident of the town. This was a really smart move.

This is such a great film and definitely one of my favorites from Sony Pictures Animation. Its characters are likable and memorable, the animation is imaginative and cartoony, and I love the heart of the film, mostly coming from the father-son relationship between the cop and his son and Flint and Tim. Also, this film always makes me hungry because of how good the food looks.

The twist at the end was great. They didn’t really focus on the spray on shoes so it felt like a surprise at the end but with just enough references to them that it doesn’t feel totally contrived. The sequel was totally directed by the mayor. Cash grab without the charm of the first movie, imo.

I'm quite mixed about this film personally. I have to say that it goes all out with its humor and absurdity, and although I find it funny, it goes a little too far for my liking. The animation is a little too cartoony for me, but it fits the atmosphere of the film well. In any case there are 2 things that I liked: Sam is a good character, well developped . Her past and what she experiences at work support the constraints of a woman who wants to work in science. Her relationship with Flint is quite cute. But what I liked the most was the relationship between Flint and his father. The 2 men, no longer able to communicate since the mother’s death, there is a touching story about them, with each having their own desires: Flint who wants his father to be proud of him and Tim who wants to understand better his son. Their scene at the end was both funny and touching. Honestly, I don't know what more I can say about this film. Even if he has good ideas, I have the impression that he goes a little too deep by releasing lots of gags. Of course I have nothing against films with only gags, I love Madagascar for that alone, but I think it's just not my range.

Because Disney/Pixar and Dreamworks are the two studios that tend to get all the publicity, people often forget that Sony/Columbia, Warner Brothers, Paramount and a handful of other mainstream studios have also put out some really great animated features over the last couple of decades. Another fun Columbia animated film is "Surf's Up" (2007), which like this one, also has a sequel that's almost as good as the first one. 😎👍
