I'm an artist, clown and balloon twister. I will be adding face painting as part of my birthday 🎂 party offerings! Your videos are very well made with a straight forward approach. I appreciate your honesty and value your options as it pertains to getting started. Most shops would recommend unnecessary products to beginner artist, just to make a buck!

Hi John, thanks so much for your kindness. I am trying to put some information out there that I would have liked to find when I was getting started. You are right, there are so many brands and products available that it's hard to know what to get without spending a fortune. I am so happy that you appreciate my work.

I’m a newbie so I went for something cheap with good reviews… ended up buying a brand called Kraze and it’s super pigmented and has worked well for me so far just practicing on my kids :) I can’t wait to start getting name brands like these tho, now that I know I absolutely love face painting!

i have been doing face painting as a hobby for events in my town since i was 18, for years i didn't own my material as the school association was lending me the wonderful pro kit they had bought for me and others to use at those events (theater and dance show, national day, school fair etc). Now though i had to buy my own to do some charity work, so i got a palette with gold, silver, turquoise, pink, coral, brown, yellow, red, blue and some kaki green, along with black and white, i first also bought a "clown white" bottle that ended up being a disapointment as it wasn't opaque at all and hard to blend. Now i bought better quality cakes in white, black, purple, a greenish blue color that is hard to mix myself, a dark green, a dark red and they were on a buy 3 pay for 2 deal. i already had some loose cosmetic grade glitters and i recently bought some gel glitter gels from snazaroo in gold, silver, diamond and multicolor so i think i'm all set for the next event this sunday! i just want to go and buy some aloe vera and glycerin to turn my loose glitter into gel as i hate having them fly around as soon as i open the jars. I also own a lot of "regular" makeup like eyeshadows and such and plan on using them as well^^
@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, it looks like you're all set! I am not sure that mixing the glitte with gel will be a good idea though because it will erase the color underneath. Better buy small plastic glitter containers with a lid. Good luck and have fun painting!

Thanks for another great tutorial Sophie. I did actually get carried away when I started & would probably need a small truck for my supplies. I've now streamlined everything & it's so much better & less confusing.
@SophiesTipps

Same here. I've also reduced my supplies so much and I am much happier this way. I will soon do a video on my current setup. It is much more compact than what I see other face painters use.

You're welcome, thank you for your kind words! I know exactly what you mean- The face painting shop owners want to sell you so much stuff you really don't need - or at least not in the quantity it is packaged ... and certainly not for an absolute beginner. Try to buy conservatively at first and see how your daughter comes along. Kids sometimes grow out of a particular phase and end up losing interest. If she sticks with it, you can always add more supplies and buy larger paint containers. That would be my suggestion.

You are such a very good communicator. Very efficient, with so much info in the amount of time allotted. I take notes on paper so I don't have to watch the video over and over, and I have to click pause after every sentence to write something down. What are the two words you say at 1:33 when you move on to the black paint? It sounds like 'press patters' but that can't be right. I'm new to this and just found your channel today. I can already tell that you are very thorough which is what I like. Not everyone with a channel can do this. For example, to me, 'pearl' always meant a particular color, an off-white like a pearl. Another artist on youtube likes to use terms without first defining them and I hate that. They assume you already know this. So when they said 'pearl' when holding up a paint that wasn't a pearl color, I didn't understand. Now I get it. Also, it's helpful to know in advance of shopping for paint that some manufacturers call it shimmer, or metallic. Avoids confusion later. There's no standardization in the industry. So your explanations are helping understand OTHER people better. Thanks. P.S. How can you possibly have time to respond to every comment? As of now, there are 338 of them. That takes hours and hours.

Thanks Joe. haha, yes, replying to everyone takes time but it's part of the fun with a KZbin Channel. I'm not into the crazy KZbinr money-making madness. What I like though is getting in touch with my viewers and helping them get into this art form or improve their skills. It's very gratifying to share knowledge and get positive feedback in return. That's what motivates me to go on. I see what you mean with "pearl". Yes, as you guessed, we don't mean "mother of pearl" but a shimmery look to a specific color. I try to place myself in the shoes I was in when I fist started and couldn't find any information (or very little) or get any answers to my questions. I'm glad that you think this is useful. Thanks for your lovely feedback! 😘

The word I say at 1:33 is "pressed powders". This is something similar to an eye shadow in terms of consistency, but in a bigger container.

+riffat said I know exactly what you mean: when I first got started I also bought so much because all the nice colours and glitters were irresistible!!! I reduced my kit a lot since then because now I know which colours and tools I love most. Besides, my bank account couldn't keep up with the expenses 😳 Good luck and have fun painting!

Absolutely wonderful video! Loved it!!! I've been contemplating online purchases of paint cakes, split cakes, brushes, etc....and I've been having a difficult time trying to figure out what to do. Thank you for your information -- I think I'll go with the 'starter' kit explained in the your tutorial and 'go from there. Can't wait for your next tutorials -- you do an amazingly incredible job of explaining things so simply :-D

That's so sweet of you, thank you! Positive feedback like yours gives me the energy to continue :) My next video will be on brushes but I will also do a video on split cakes. They're really fun to use but not absolutely necessary in a beginner's kit, in my opinion. Have fun face painting and thanks again!

SophiesTips is there a meh brand? Like one that you wouldn't recommend?
@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps 7 жыл бұрын
meh as in: "not so good"? If that's what you mean, it's a difficult question... Not because I don't want to get in trouble with any brands out there. I really don't care because I am not affiliated with any of them and always give my honest opinion. But difficult because I've experienced in the past that a brand that I don't like might be loved by another face painter. It's not just the product in itself that counts but personal preference in terms of consistency, colors, etc... are also a factor. It's also difficult because there are some brands that I don't like for certain uses and that I love for other uses. For example, I think that Snazaroo is terrible for using with a brush but quite good to use as a base color with the sponge. Wolfe FX is the opposite: great with the brush but too thick and hard to wash off when used with the sponge. Except for the brand "Eulenspiegel" - which is a German brand - I've never hated everything about a single brand. And even Eulenspiegel does good glitter, so there you go. Hope this helps a little...

Thank you for the great series. Would it be possible for u to make a video dedicated on how to clean and take care of the paints and other products? I would also be interested in what do u do in between kids (for example is it possible to sanitize the brushes in between) and how many brushes /water cups are u using etc.
@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your great suggestion so I will probably need to address this in more details because I get a lot of questions on this. When I work at an event it's absolutely impossible to sanitise the brushes between each child. I just rinse them thoroughly in water and change my water about every half an hour. If I see that a child has a runny nose, a fever or an open wound on his face, I offer to paint something on his arm instead. So far I haven't had any issues working this way. When I face paint in hospital, I use a clean brush and sponge for each child, but this is an exception. Hope this helps.

If I may intrude because I'm also interesting about that and your question already helped, but is there a possibility to disinfect the paints themself or is that impossible? because I've been searching about that for a long time and I have not found any information and I want to start working but I don't want to cause any harm to any kids and that's my biggest care- that my supplies would not be disinfected and something would happen. Also, is there a possibility to disinfect the brushes with rubbing alcohol (the stuff you can get on Pharmacy) between the kids or on brakes so it will be a bit cleaner? is that okay? Will it work?

How about sponges, did u just rinse and use them back or take it from new sponges? @@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps 8 күн бұрын
@@khaeriyah6358 I understand everyone's concern regarding safety, especially when working with children. In theory it would be ideal to use one sponge per color and per child and the same for each brush. But the reality of a public event doesn't make this possible at all. I am being very open and straightforward about this and I realize that most face painters would never admit it but the fact is that I have never worked with any face painter who does that. Using separate brushes and sponges would mean that the face painter would need to have hundreds of these items readily available. It is just not feasible. Same issue with sanitizing sponges and brushes in between each child, there is simply not enough time for that. When you have a line of 10+ children waiting, the key thing is to be quick. 5 minutes per child is the norm. So the reality is that sponges and brushes are reused. Personally, when I do an all-day job, I clean my brushes and sponges with soapy water during the mid-day break. I change my rinsing water more often than that. And of course I do a thorough wash of my entire kid after each job. This is how each face painter works, or at least all those I have worked with or witnessed working. As I said in an earlier comment, the situation would be quite different if I worked in a hospital. In this case I would definitely follow stricter guidelines. My personal assumption is that, in a normal event setting, the parents can clearly see that I reuse the same sponges and brushes when they wait in line. If they don't feel comfortable with that, it is their choice and decision to refrain from having their child's face painted. As far as I am concerned, I would never face paint a child who is clearly sick (runny nose or fever, or coughing) or has any face wounds, red eyes, etc. In this case I decline altogether or suggest a small design on their arm. Although I have always reused my sponges and brushes at events, I have never had any issues or complaints in my 15+ years of face painting professionally. Please note that what I wrote reflects my own thoughts about the situation. Each face painter should decide for themselves how they want to approach this issue. As far as I know, there are no set rules on the matter. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this great video! I am just starting, and had no idea where to begin, but this really helped! One question I have is how much of a difference is there between applying a coat of paint with a sponge vs brush? I'm so glad that you took the time to do this :)
@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps 9 жыл бұрын
Helena Sverak Thanks for your kind words, Helena! That's a good question. A sponge is used to cover a larger area of the face. It's ideal for the base coat. It can also be used to add a particular structure or shadows and highlights on a color already applied. The sponge will help you achieve a uniform finish if you stipple it on the skin. Brushes are typically used for line work or to delimit the edges of a specific shape. Large brushes can also cover large areas but they will leave brushstroke marks and it will take longer than with a sponge. What I recommend is: use a sponge first to lay down the base color(s) and then switch to brushes for line work and details.

Hi I absolutly Love your videos. Would you be able to do one on your set up and on How you would deal with finishing up and closing the line?
@SophiesTipps
@SophiesTipps 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Yes a video on my set up is planned and will definitely be filmed this year. If I have 10 or more kids waiting in line an hour before the end of my time I go through the kids waiting and write numbers with face paint on their hands. I only plan for 10 kids maximum because I don't want to stress out too much in my last hour. I then tell the kid #10 (or the last in line) that he/she is the last one and would be grateful if he could tell new people coming that the line is closed. While I am painting, I keep an eye on new kids waiting anyway and I tell them myself in necessary. If parents argue, I explain that only the kids with a number on their hands will be face painted. This system works pretty well for me.
