Just picked one of these up at the last show I went to. Very excited to see what this one can do. Hopefully grow and thrive in my care! Unfortunately for me mine was close to opening its new leaf when I purchased it and the buds didn't fare the shock of so many environmental changes in a short time. That's ok, There's always next time, though from your video it will be awhile before I start seeing growth from it again. I'm glad I found this though, I would have been in a panic if I didn't see anything start growing until late in the year before I saw this!

Thanks for the info on growth pattern etc. Now I know that mine is still quite a young plant (about 10 leaves) but it should put on some new flowering sized growths towards the end of this year. Can't wait.

I have removed most of the sphagnum from my mount. It really seems to be more happy with nothing extra for moisture. You might want to find a really humid area to keep it until it establishes. Mount or repot as soon as y ou see new growth.

That has such nice fat little bulbs! I love those fat short baby bulbs. Wade, you're making me want this orchid!! :) I need to save a little money now, because I went a little wild buying plants when Fred came.

+Astrid Thanks, Astrid. I think that species play an important role in an orchid collection, especially when they are this showy.

No doubt about it! I prefer very easy species, generally, and I would prefer to have something like 90% hybrids and 10% species so I only have to fuss over a few. :) You know, Wade, it'd be nice if you had a picture of this one each year in bloom, so you could someday show us the progress of the blooming ability of the plant as it matures and grows into a specimen size.

That's very cute and tiny, orange flower! why did you mount it at the end of the bark? or was it in the middle and grew downward?

+MaryG Orchids I knew someone would catch that. I thought that the growing point was pointed upwards. Didn't find out until about 3 months later that I had it wrong. You can't win em all! :)

Have you ever grown these from Flask? I wanted to try growing out orchids from Flask and I bought 20 of these babies for a good price to learn. Where I live it is nice and cool most of the time so I think it will be ok for me.

I have some in community pots now that came from flask. They need very good drainage even right out of flask. They started rotting on me until I moved them to clay pots. The ones that are left are coming along fine but they can be challenging. These are not nearly as cool growing as coccinea.

ok thanks. That was confusing to me. Some sites said they were cool to hot growers. Thats a big range. Good draining and keep them warm. I will keep doing my research thanks. As tiny seedlings what kind of light would you give them?

Very bright light but no direct sun. Probably enough to bloom Oncidium alliance - but barely.

Wade, I just had to mount the one I bought off of you in August. It lost quite a few roots, but I think i just kept it too moist. The new mount will keep it airy with just a little bit of coconut husk over the roots (no sphagnum). Do you think this should recover and grow new roots?

I thought I had replied to this last night but "oh well" :). It sounds like you're doing the right thing. I know they are HIGHLY intolerant of staying too moist. Try to keep air moving on it.
