It's important to note (9:15) that ibuprofen (or any medication containing a NSAID) raises the risk of severe stomach bleeding for people who drink 3+ alcoholic drinks per day during the same time that they take the ibuprofen. Just anecdotal, but I find the best way to "cure" a hangover, is too avoid getting one. I stick to clear liquors like vodka, on ice, with usually nothing else.. but you can add lime, seltzer, whatever, but what you're trying to avoid is anything sugary. That goes for all drinks. The sweet liqueurs and mixed drinks with coke etc (Jack & Coke for example: dark booze plus a high sugar mixer) are the recipe for a very bad morning. Along the same lines, for every 2 or 3 drinks you're having, try to get a fresh glass of water in you too .. or some Perrier, Pellegrino, etc. Much better to try to mitigate getting dehydrated, than to suffer and try and rehydrate the next day.

Probably because the beer contains more methanol. That's a possible cause that she left out here that I've heard many times. We have a harder time breaking down methanol, and so it makes us feel like crap.

"Alcohol" (ethanol) alone can't cause the hangover. I'll happily drink a gallon of 5% Doodle stout (or other real ales) in a session and be absolutely fine. A single 330m bottle of Becks lager though and I'm dead with a thumping headache the following day. Could be the methanol idea, or something similar to allergies. Certainly we all have different reactions to different drinks. No wonder there's no definitive cure.

The best hangover cure I've found is a hot bowl of Pho. Tons of liquid, salts, just the right amount of grease, presumably casein in the fat brisket I usually get as a meat option, and starchy carbs for a quick energy boost, I've never not felt better after downing that combo after a night of drinking.

After watching this video, I’m wondering why another popular (although obviously short-lived) hangover cure is to *continue drinking*. Any thoughts?
@AllFloofAndNoThoughts3 жыл бұрын
Disclaimer this is an educated guess. Hangover is almost certainly more than just one cause. Continuing to drink gives your body some water which in the morning we need anyways. Alcohol is a drug so we do experience withdrawal symptoms so continuing to drink can mitigate that effect. Alcohol has a numbing effect so that probably doesn’t hurt either.
@corngreaterthanwheat3 жыл бұрын

I'm thinking tho ... the statement "hangovers are not caused by dehydration" is not the same as the statement "drinking lots of water before my drunk ass goes to bed will not help." Because that's what I do, and when I skip it I always feel worse 🤷♂️. Also it's not something I do _while_ drinking, so I don't think it's decreasing my overall booze intake as mentioned in the video...

I take Ibuprofen after too much drinking, so far it has always helped very well with the headaches, drowsiness and most of the nausea. However I still get slight feelings of imbalance but it's managable. I've read that its ability to mitigate the effects of a hangover was already known to its inventor Stewart Adams. Alcohol also degrades the quality of sleep quite drastically, so parts of its symptons should come from severe sleep deprevation. If you are a regular coffee drinker the coffeine withdrawal symptons will also be worse during a hangover, so don't forget to take your Ibuprofen with your morning coffee.
@bsidethebox3 жыл бұрын
As a person who has battled chronic insomnia, I'd definitely agree that a lot of "hangover symptoms" align with the gross feelings following a bout of insomnia. I can't compare for sure as I hate alcohol and have only managed to down enough to get tipsy once in my life (where I found out intoxication just makes me want to sleep on the table so screw that) Stay up much later than usual (ain't no party like a can't sleep party) and sleep poorly whilst teetotaling and you'll still likely enjoy a queasy tummy, puffy face, slow brain, slowed reflexes, headache, dry mouth, etc.

My cure (least what my body craves) is a big spoon of peanut butter, a pint of cold milk and something with sugar: et voila! Speaking of, interesting that sugar wasn't mentioned in this. I always thought as you're intaking a massive amount of "sugars" while drinking, then immediately stopping - felt it could be an overactive pancreas in the routine of processing this sugar, that by morning ends up mimicks a diabetic "low" (lethargic, depressive thoughts, feeling ill) - be interesting to see the glycemic index of the night before / morning after. #theoryforthemixer
@SophsNotes3 жыл бұрын
Ah yes the sugar theory is another one I came across! I was squeezed on time so didn’t put it in but it definitely seems to have a part to play, and it’s interesting to look at how the components of different alcoholic drinks impact hangovers (with sugar being a big un). I’ll have to try that cure! Sounds like a good one.

I've long thought it wasn't really dehydration[*] and periodically consume interesting material on the many ideas, theories, and so forth -- like you say, all still a work in progress on many fronts. ONE thing though is how much it seems to help downing a pint or two of tap-water before going to bed after a night out. My hunch about this is that you're literally handing the body the very "vehicle" it utilises for doing so much of its regular work; and so, whatever it does to "process" toxins etc., it can do quicker and more easily with a quick top-up of the materials (water) it needs to operate. It's not actually dehydrated, it just makes everything going more easily and more quickly to have a surplus slosh into the system at that point. [*] Don't even get me started about everyone thinking we need 2.5 litres of water a day because everyone forgot it was the bottled water companies who told us that in recent decades!! I looked up the scientific paper from which the water companies seem to have drawn this information -- yes, 2.5 litres, followed immediately by a comment that 70% of said water arrives in the food we eat during the day... Yup, more like 0.75 litres of actual water during the day and if you have a glass of orange juice with breakfast, a cuppa or two here and there, a glass of water with tea, you're totally good to go. Not a single overpriced bottle of water in environmentally damaging packaging to be seen! #petpeeve Great video btw :)
@levishaun83343 жыл бұрын
Huh, this is interesting. Where I'm from, I don't think I have ever met a person who thought that hangover is caused by dehydration. I have extensive history of drinking with tons of different folks (kind of happens naturally when you only drink at a bar, but very often) so hangover as a topic have been brought up quite a lot. Literally everyone I ever talked to about it has said something along the lines of it having something to do with alcohol decay doing something or other in the brain. I haven't been drinking with your average alcoholic, but not all of them had degrees either.
@JohnTaylor-xg4jn3 жыл бұрын

@bloodgain3 жыл бұрын
One possible cause I've heard many times that you didn't cover is ethanol vs methanol. We break down ethanol first and have a harder time breaking down methanol, so we feel bad if we get a lot of methanol. So, at least in theory, the more methanol in the drinks (e.g. beer and wine instead of, say, vodka), the more we're likely to feel bad.
