As a teacher I gave detentions for hiccoughs. The shock of getting a manifestly unfair punishment for an autonomous reflex cured the hiccoughs instantly. Of course I rescinded the detention. Worked nearly every time, except for one lad who decided to argue the toss while still hiccoughing. Which was really funny.

Scaring the pants off someone works. A single scare actually works several times. My wife had persistent hiccups and I shouted BOO!!! really loudly, when she wasn't expecting it. That scare cured her hiccups. Now when she gets hiccups again, I ask if she would like me to cure her hiccups again. Not surprisingly, she doesn't want scaring again. But frequently her hiccups stop after the mere mention of repeating the original scare.

when I was A Youth if my ballet teacher heard me hiccuping in class, she would stop the music, stop class, and command me to hiccup, immediately, in front of everyone. Almost always the hiccups stopped immediately, and I couldn't fulfill the hiccup command. I'm guessing this was bewilderment at work. Also why it doesn't work when I'm just with family at home, because embarrassment in front of my whole ballet class was probably a necessary ingredient.

All of the supposed cures and even the Valsalva manoeuvre seem like overcomplicating it to me. I've found that all that you ACTUALLY need to do is sit down, be calm, and focus on breathing regularly and intentionally. A few minutes of doing that will get rid of hiccups every time for me. The length of time you need to do it will get shorter with a bit of experience. Just do not cough, that will immediately bring the hiccups back.

John Adams, US founding father and 2nd president, remarked late in life to Thomas Jefferson (also a founding father and 3rd president) that he despised Plato (350 bce or thereabouts) because he found "The Republic" to be a most impractical exercise defining government. However, Adams did praise Plato for his most excellent cure for hiccups: the Sneeze. Adams' preferred sneeze inducer was "snuff" but I have found that a wax-stiffened thread inserted up one's nostril and lightly twirled is just as effective a method to promote a robust sneeze to bring a halt to any case of hiccups. Love your channel btw - hope you continue sharing :)

Fun side effect of singing lessons: I can now stop hiccups by just focusing on my natural breathing.
@javiTests2 жыл бұрын
It has been years since I learnt by myself to control them. Since then, I have one or two maximum and that's it. I learnt this technique because I'm stubborn as hell, so I don't stop until I achieve something. I don't know if it can be applied to you 😂. Basically what I did was to pay a lot of attention what happened when I got hiccups and I discovered that you (or at least me) can actually feel what the diaphragm is doing! What I do when I have hiccups is to breathe kind of slowly until I cannot inhale more and then exhale when you notice the diaphragm is "going down". It typically takes no more than 5-10 seconds and if you do it "in sync" it works every time. At the beginning it took a bit but as I said I haven't had more than two in a row in 15 years or so. Just take your time to feel what's happening when you have them. The sensation of "the diaphragm going down" is very weak/faint but you'll learn to feel it 😄. It's kind of similar when you swallow something dry and you feel it going down through the oesophagus.

Interesting! I had a go-to with one partner of doing something to startle/“scare” them. I don’t like using this one with people I haven’t got a fairly close relationship with, though, or at least without getting prior consent (which of course makes it harder to do immediately afterwards, because it’s harder to startle someone who’s expecting you to try to)… so bewilderment seems a lovely [side note: I swear I just hiccuped! It was a one-off, I’m pretty sure, but how funny!] alternative, with much less need for consent. I might try the bribe thing, too. ;)

Fun things about the valsalva manoeuvre - weightlifters often do it when they're going for PRs, as it increases abdominal pressure and makes it (a bit) easier to lift heavier weights. You're also supposed to strictly avoid it during childbirth as it can increase the risk of tearing and other not-fun things. (Seriously, some of the material aimed at the pregnant population makes it sound like you'll spontaneously explode or something.)
