The last season really did portray the reality of what the Wiseguy life is. You have to take into account that Tony, killed half of his own guys that used to sit in the same spot, he even considered Paulie himself at one point. Almost every character on the sopranos represents a moment of a person's life. Junior it's the old guy coming in terms with his mortality, his total lost of clarity, it's us coming to a inevitable end. Paulie it's the guy becoming old, not having family or kids, it's a person dealing with his own age. Tony it's the middle of the road, the mid life crisis. Chris it's the young adult wanting the recognition and approval but becoming disappointed with that life. Aj and Meadow it's the youth, the complexity of following a legacy or not, choosing our own path, trying to grow up. Edit: This is just a perception of mine, that keeps coming back every time I watch the show. It's totally fine if you love the sopranos just for his mob stuff and comedy, I love too. I just have this simple observation while seeing this characters.

Christopher’s gone, Silvio’s in a coma, junior is in a mental hospital, his underlings are all wacked, Richie sat there once now he’s gone, Vito is gone, gene is gone, Bobby is gone although I don’t remember him sitting there, I think carmine and Johnny sacks sat there once and they’re all gone now. It’s crazy how only Paulie and tony are there now and even then tony might’ve gotten wacked in the end and paulie has the cat looking at him along with inheriting the crew that only dead people get and also tony sometimes considers whacking him. Nobody survives I think that’s the true message of this

This scene accurately reflects what it's like to work in a corporate setting. The most comfortable you'll ever become with your coworkers is sliding little quirks into your conversation. Like with Paulie's "I live to serve you, my liege." And his many other jokes and "heh-hehs." But none of it is genuine. These guys don't enjoy each others' company. Tony doesn't appreciate Paulie accepting his offer. He doesn't even see Paulie as a friend. At the end, if you've sired no children or have no one in your life outside of work - you are left alone. And your choices in life boil down to accepting that loneliness or staying with your job. In this case, Paulie takes the promotion.

Lots of creepy things in this scene... the whole premise is about death, Satriale's is also in darkness behind them(the pig sign behind them has been lit up in every other scene), watch the butcher that enters at 0:01 he fades into the black. The empty chairs with the empty coffee cups, the cat that come and stares at Pauly and the empty chairs (ghosts?), the car with no one in it? (this is however not a maserati, so not for sure Chris). The wind is creepy throughout the whole episode and this scene. Watch Tony at 2:37 he senses a presence to the side of him (similar to the look when Pussy was in the mirror) and then as soon as he leaves the cat comes right behind whatever that presence was Tony felt.

I always hoped for a spin off starring Paulie. It would be called "Paulie Walnuts." Each episode begins with Paulie either playing cards, watching a football game, sitting at a bar, etc. He is just telling stories from the old days to the young bucks. The entire series is in flashback. Then we get to see his rise up through the ranks as he gets into different adventures along the way. We will see a young Junior Soprano, Tony's dad, Feech, Richie, and the other Mustache Petes. Even a young Tony and Big Pussy as teenagers could make the occasional appearance. Paulie DOESNT die. 15 seconds in, cuts to angle where the Italian Sausage sign says “a liar/SAGE”. Paulie lied to Tony before, and had both the smarts and the luck to survive against the Colombo’s in the 70s, beat cancer, and all this hell. He’s the only one who picks up on signs, the only one who gets harassed by visions (talking to ghosts/seeing Virgin Mary). He literally says “I live BUT to serve you my liege”. He knows Tony’s doomed, and is washing his hands of a problem the only way he knows how. Look at his face when he finally “gives in” to Tony’s request...he never did, and gave a silver tongued answer to someone who frankly, was gonna wack him for a stupid joke. He’s the only one who listened (and got freaked out lol) to the signs and paid attention to the cat, and frankly, I think the cat recognizes this. He’s thought about jumping ship once before, and that’s when times were better than this...you think he’d follow orders now? Paulie always had humble ambitions, not asking for too much of the pie, but finally he said whatever needed to be said to have tony off of his back...and is still tanning with the cat to this day. He wins due to attrition, luck, and foresight...if you really call that winning. Great show...brilliantly written Edit: here’s a metaphor for brilliant writing: paulie reflects the heat from the sun to cover his neck (protect himself)...since the very beginning. I always thought the bullet just barely hit the side of his head, not entering the skull. We see him get up and continue running. And then we see Chris and Paulie from above where the trail ended, from the russian's perspective, as in he climbed up a tree and chris and paulie never even looked up. Paulies car has been stolen while they were in the woods. -The russian took it and disappeared from the entire scene and is alive and well somewhere drinking vodka. He was after all specially trained soldier, Speznaz or how's it spelled. Survival expert of some sorts.
@jaybee34778 жыл бұрын
tarsitrs Those trees looked very thin and brittle, plus there weren't' many seconds between the bullet strafing his head, and the duo reaching the spot where the blood ended. I find it unlikely any healthy human, let alone an overweight male over 6ft tall, shot 20 seconds ago, could have shimmied up that tree so quickly, unnoticed, or without it breaking/bending with his weight. Plus Paulie referred to him as "Fucking Rasputin", all of which lent a further air of mysticism about his disappearance.
@tarsitrs8 жыл бұрын
+Jay Bee Hah, yeah, Rasputin :D Well, the show does have that supernatural aspect in it.

The look on Paulie's face tells it all: he believes in the curse, that he is going to die, like the others. And then that cat lies down, right by him, just to top it off. Paulie might be one the last standing, but he believes that he won't be around for long.

@a.d.3606 Жыл бұрын
It's funny you say that. I do the same thing and I'm not even Italian. My father is French Canadian and I used to spend a lot of time in Montreal, especially in an area that had a lot of Italian families around where my grandma lived. There's something about the aesthetic and the manerisms that remind me of that time and place for me too. The clothes, the cars, the catholic undercurrent. All of that.

My mother of all people said the same thing, in a slightly different manner. The ending scene of Tony with his family to her symbolizes how cold Tony has become at this point. Most of his friends and old associates from the life are dead or jailed sans Paulie, his uncle is an invalid and his family more or less still hates him. But he’s still gonna sit down with them and eat and try to have a good time. Him constantly checking the door representing the paranoia he’s going to carry for the rest of his life, his friends are almost all gone but they’ll be new wise guys to replace them in time. Everyone is replaceable.

I loved all the references to real mob happenings. especially when Junior would bring them up from back in the day. Wikipedia has an entire listing of all the real life mob references. its fascinating. like the episode where someone knocks on Juniors door. Bobby says, "I wonder who that could be?" Junior says, "Judge Crater, how the fuck should I know??" Judge crater was known for ruling against the mafia and disappeared back in the 40's. I don't think its ever been solved. I thought it was brilliant how Junior brings it up in the context that maybe it was the mafia who caused his disappearance.

Windy, autumn day (as in winds of change, impermanence), autumn weather (approaching end/death). The pork store is dark and empty (evidenced by the dark, nearly black windows in the background), suggesting a morbid absence of vitality. If Satriale's is merely closed, why are two gangsters discussing business in front of a closed business (another type of "front")? We are left with an aging Paulie attempting to capture what's left of the day's sun. Enter the cat.

Paulie had Tony killed. He felt bad in the moment when Tony considered Patzi to run it and that look he gave Tony he felt regret for what's about to happen. That's why the cat came up at the end and sat there staring at Paulie. Because Paulie is now the rat.

that's an interesting theory, bc the one thing Tony Sirico made David Chase promise him when he accepted the role of Paulie was that he wouldn't make his character out to be a rat.
