I loved how this show subtly revealed the characters' hypocrisy. Paulie felt entitled to half the score Ralph made with his information in this scene; but a few seasons later, he didn't want to pony up to Vito Spatafore after he tipped him off to the score in the Colombian laundry. It's just like how, on Season 1, Uncle Junior had Brendan Filone whacked for hijacking his company's trucks, even though a few years earlier (as we saw in that Christmas flashback in Season 3), Jackie Aprile, Sr. gave Junior shit for hijacking *his* truck. Brilliant storytelling.

@sanguiniusi8187 Жыл бұрын
Obviously theyre all hypocrites and the show reveals it over and over again. That being said there are still important differences with the example you gave. Brendan Filone was a nobody, he wasnt even on the way to being made and he had no family connections or close friendships with anybody in the New Jersey family. In fact they all seem to dislike him and he got a truck driver killed when he was highjacking those trucks. Junior was a made guy and (probably) a captain when he highjacked Jackie Aprile, Sr.'s trucks, plus the Soprano family had close ties to every high level mobster in the New Jersey family. Obviously they play by different rules and Junior can get away with stuff that some random guy cant. You can call that hypocrisy, but thats how the mob works (at least in this series), having one set of rules for outsiders and another one for members. Thats how they keep control of the criminal activity in their area within the family and its a perfectly rational approach and the main benefit you get for being part of a mafia family. To compare apples to apples: You can be sure that Junior wouldnt have killed one of his captains if he had done what Brendan did. There would have been a sit down and some form of punishment but that would have been it.

Of course there was a protocol to follow, but if something really would happend, Tony and crew would've made something to try to protect Paulie. And Ralph knew it. Beign made doesn't mean beign stupid.
@MegaDonGallo10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Vargas I believe you are referring to Billy Batts being whacked by Tommy. As you will recall, the result of that was Tommy being lured to a fake 'making' ceremony and he himself being whacked. A more illustrative example was when Ralfie made a fat joke about Jinny - Johnny Sack's wife. At the time Johnny Sack was the underboss of the powerful Lupertazzi family, while Ralfie is only a New Jersey caporegime. Johnny demanded Ralfie be whacked - a measure that Carmine Lupertazzi and Tony refused to sanction, solely because of the amount of money Ralfie was making both families by being point guy for the Esplanade construction project (as much as 3million a year for the New Jersey family alone). Instead Carmine insists that Johnny agree to an amount that Ralfie will be taxed for the insult. Unsatisfied, Johnny goes so far as to arrange Ralfie's whacking, in defiance of Carmine's wishes. However, he cancels the hit at the last minute and agrees to a compromise. Unbeknownst to Johnny, Carmine has sanctioned a hit on him for being a risk to the earning power of the families, which in turn is also cancelled when Johnny agrees to a conciliation. So, in a nutshell, the powers behind the families would have whacked an underboss in order to protect the earning power of a mere capo. Money-making ability is all it ever comes down to. Jeopardising that in any way is a sure-fire way to get whacked.

Tony's ruling is solely based on what gives him the biggest financial outcome. After just discussing about Paulie putting his mother at Greengrove Retirement Community, and knowing how much of a less earner Paulie is compared to Ralph, Tony knows Paulie will only kick up to him the bare minimum. While Ralphie in the other hand who earns very well and is constantly using money to seek Tony's approval is most likely going to kick up a significant amount more than Paulie. Remember later on the show, Paulie doesn't want to kick up to Carmela when Tony is in a coma,

@2 demons attached I am a firefighter/paramedic. I understand the humor. I've lived it for almost 35 years. This is no joke. It didn't "disappear" after the election. It's not going away any time soon. It's time more people take it seriously. It's killing people and ruining people's lives.

I would've thought $15,000 is a fair amount to give Paulie. So 12K isn't really that bad if you think about it, despite the fact the heist wouldn't have happened without the alarm code, Tony has a point it was Ralph who did all the hard work involved, all Paulie provided was a number so twelve thousand dollars (out of 100K) for a friggen code is a pretty sweet deal. Paulie was just always a greedy prick when it came to money.

+wogacelli Can you explain the part where Paulie had to give Vito half of the money from robbing the Colombian drug cartels then?
@earthofspace19645 жыл бұрын
@@thesuperstar6256 Excatly. I think fair share for Paulie would be at least 30k
@gc992895 жыл бұрын
If Paulie staked the place out and got the alarm code, then 25-30k would be far more reasonable. I think Tony pocketed 18-20k from Ralph on the back end of the deal that was really Paulie's money.
