Fokker pilot screwed this up on the merge, by dipping his nose to get speed. That descending turning fight is exactly what a camel wants. He should have lit the camel up, and forced him into a scissor or a circle. The DR1 can easily rate fight a Camel and win.

Pretty sure a lot of pilots could do that if they caught an EA unawares and snuck up to within a close enough distance And when Richthofen was finally killed he was chasing one plane while being chased by another and taking fire from the ground so even his skill wasn’t enough to get him out of that situation

In WWI pilots on both side did not have parachutes. Many pilots did jump from their planes because they would rather jump then burn.

Richthofen was well known for only ever taking on pilots with no experience. The average survival time of a brand new pilot was 6 hours.

I have a copy of the sort of rewritten book that he wrote in 1917. In the introduction, written by a researcher well after the war, it states that at least 30 pilots he downed had at least 5 kills under their belt, and quite a few of the planes he shot down were a even match to the plane he flew at the time. Some ofcourse would have little experience, but not all.
