In 2001 when this Sopwith Camel replica first flew in New Zealand, it sported the oldest operating aero engine in the country, and probably the first time a rotary powered aircraft had been seen and heard in many decades.

It had to be difficult for the sopwith pilot to have to worry about an additional chore of managing the throttle On/Off configuration.

Right, a radial in the Triplane. Not authentic of course, but a LOT easier to take care of and manage and more reliable. Honestly I don't blame and won't critisize anyone who puts a modern engine in a WW1 replica, considering all the hard work that goes into building one. Their airplane, their choice, their rules.

It sounds like that because these engines didn't have throttles back then, they could only either be turned on or off

Hoy mate, the engines at that time either ran full on or off! That's it! You can't run those old rotary engines 'full blast on' the whole time. They didn't have a throttle setting for cruise, so they had to turn the engine off and on to keep the engine from blowing up. Other facts, the engines were lubricated with castor oil..... the oil would constantly spray out of the engine just as you can see the smoke coming out of this engine. So... not only were the pilots flying without parachutes, they were constantly being hit in the face with castor oil and swallowing small amounts of it everytime they flew.... developing a bad case of diarrhea throughout their career. The tires then where either gray or brownish in color. A black additive to rubber is a modern change making tires black as we know of today. The Triplane in this video has a modern engine, giving it the ability to set diffrent throttle positions, also obviously dependable power and modern standard petroleum oil. Take care Sir, I hope I'm not repeating things you already know.
