This song is a tribute to the THREE HEROIS SOLDADOS BRASILEIROS. In the 2nd world war. Where the Three Heroes preferred to give their lives to save their partners. They fought bravely with their Last sighs, German (Nazi) soldiers considered them great heroes, they are still remembered in Brazil and even in Germany. The 3 soldiers received tombs in Germany FOR THE ENEMY OWN! but most gringos don't know the meaning of the song ... It makes me a little sad :(

There is a meme about this: What I watched: "Sora no Woto" What I expected: "K-ON" What i got: "All quiet on the western front" And that is this anime in a nutshell. You see the "standard" tropes, then it becomes really dark, really quickly. Example (small spoiler). The white haired girl that tinkeres with the tank-walker all night and never gets enough sleep. Oh the standard eccentric gear head. Then you get her backstory and holy hell. I wouldn't dare to sleep at night either with that on my conscience...

It's set in an alternate time line, and the exact location is unclear. Much of the earth has been devastated by war; Helvetia and Roma occupy some of the remaining fertile land, but war between them threatens what stability there is. Considering that the "Romans" speak a language that sounds a bit Germanic in nature, they may well be descended from the Holy Roman Empire rather than Italian Rome. But there are also inscriptions using Japanese kanji, so who knows? I don't think it is overtly stated, but I personally believe the reason this particular unit is all female is that their base is set in a town where the Legend of the Fire Maidens (who defeated a fiery demon) took place. Also, it's a fairly isolated town, so the possibility of the girls being involved in actual combat seemed remote at the time. Indeed, the unit's single tank is initially non-functional, but they restore it.
