I came to this particular video late due to interest in the Kingdom Death videos and owning those particular models. The detailed explanations in this first video was so helpful. Reasoning on why you mixed and thinned paint. How to go back and fix certain errors. Why you painted things a certain way were no longer included in your later/newer videos and I really appreciated them as a beginner here. You inspire and help a lot with these videos. Thank you!

I've found this video - and all of your others - incredibly helpful for beginners and experts alike. Your videos are very well structured and your detailed instructions are easy to follow. I picked up Blood Rage merely because I liked the idea of a Viking-based board game - but the miniatures really had "PAINT ME" written all over them, which is why I decided to give it a go. I'm now done with the frost giant and the troll and I really notice a learning curve with the colors, the shades and the dry paints. Thank you so much for your great work and please do some more Blood Rage, if you find the time :) PS: You do great work on the custom soundtracks as well - keep up the great work :)

Hands down, no contest, the best how to paint videos online. Nothing compares. Hoping we'll get to see some Blood Bowl when it releases. I'd figure painting one model from each team for the videos would suffice seeing as the models look more or less the same and uniform and wouldn't be as big a project as Star Wars or Zombicide. Here's hoping. :)

Once again, I'm just in awe; the final piece looks amazing. I was a little iffy about the skintone initially, but those last few layers of highlights really tied it all together and the small patches of snow in the hair/fur were a great addition. On a semi-related side note, perhaps you can confirm; based on the art and the minis we saw, this appears to be a sort of fantasy-Viking themed game, am I correct?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes you are correct! It's a terrific blend of Euro-style area control and card drafting with a nice "dudes on a map" thematic feel :)

Superb work, Sorastro! I've been learning a lot from your various series, and I must admit, they're pretty entertaining too. However, I should say that I am quite new to board gaming and figure painting in general. So besides those games you've already covered, what others would recommend to a newbie like me. I, for certain, have been taking a look online at 'Talisman' and 'Cosmic Encounter' and both have really impressed me. Having a collection of my own is an idea I'm very keen on, and knowing what games you would recommend me for starting it, is all the more reassuring. Whether it has miniatures or not, I'd be very glad to know. Best wishes, mate!
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Siegfried! (Great name btw - I'm quite a fan of the Ring Cycle :) ). Recommending board games is a very tricky business as so much depends on what you're into, how many people you get to play with (and their ages) etc. I think it's best that you check out board game reviews of the games you're interested in (which I'm sure you are doing anyway!) but I can recommend the following channels: Drive Thru Review kzbin.info/door/BYM2vSw8EUTBDavzOwdyPw, Board Game Brawl kzbin.info/door/WiV-TiENprwwj1xiyj8jQQ, No Pun Included kzbin.info/door/tU-oQXFKUMFvhunPrx7U-w, marcowargamer: kzbin.info/door/qjObEZh6BQw2xpgMjPZ7qg and I'm sure you will have come across Tom Vasel's reviews at The Dice Tower: kzbin.info/door/iwBbXQlljGjKtKhcdMliRA These guys usually let you know what kind of gamer the games are best suited to so you can make an informed choice :)

I'm really interested in the zenith highlighting undercoat technique. Question: You choose cold grey as the 45-degree highlight. Would you consider that color reasonable for any application or do you change it based on what color is going to go on top of it? For example, If I want to apply that technique to a plague marine using citadel death guard green as the base coat on top of the zenith highlighting, would cold grey still work? What considerations do you make when choosing the undercoat highlight color? Great work, thanks a ton!
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Eesoteric43! Yes I tend to prime most of my minis these days using the black-Cold Grey-white approach. I've yet to experiment with using colours for my priming/pre-shading partly because I like to keep things simple - especially for the majority of my viewers who don't own an airbrush but I think it would be well worth experimenting with if you do have one :)
@Eesoteric437 жыл бұрын

Great job, great tutorial, the best explanation I've ever seen, actually! Is there any texture of a model you recomend using airbrush technique to apply paint? I'm asking cause I've watched a lot of trolls painted in such a way (warmachine/hordes mostly). They look very nice but it seems to me that traditional brush technique suits trolls better.
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rafał! I honestly haven't had that much experience with the airbrush beyond simple priming and zenithal highlights so I can't really advise. I'd suggest just trying out as many techniques and ideas as you can and see what works for you :)

@Tennethums18 жыл бұрын
Love the mini! I'm curious, though. Does the air brush of the black/grey/white really do much for the mini in the end? I ask because I've painted many minis myself and have found that with layer upon layer of highlights, shadows, detail, etc. you can kind of omit some of the work buried beneath. At least to the point that it's "not worth the effort"? Just thought maybe a white primer w/ a wash in the shades of color that you'll be using for the base coat would be ok and save a lot of time?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tennethums1! Thanks for the comment; you do raise an interesting question! I think you're right that if we apply too many layers (especially if they're not properly thinned) then we will obscure most of the zenithal highlights beneath. In reality I admit it's hard to tell how much of the finished contrast is the original zenithal highlight and how much has been applied afterwards, but I think it's more than one might think. What I find when working over zenithal highlights is that I have much less work to do in establishing the basic light and shade - which isn't to say I won't still go to town building up the upper highlights however - it just feels like I've been given a good head start or at the very least, the zenithal highlights provide a very clear guide as to where to place the highlights. I also feel that if I'm priming in black with an airbrush anyway, that adding the grey and white afterwards really isn't too much more work (and quite enjoyable too!).
@Rikalonius7 жыл бұрын

Hi there Sorastro, don't know if you'll ever see this but I had a quick question about issues I had painting my Frost giant. (I'll also understand completely if you're too busy :) I decided to paint this guy with a very aggressive blue tone, my main colours were Vallejo's Steel Gray and GW's Baharroth blue (with nightshade as a shade). I had a very difficult time making the highlight layers appear smooth, and non-streaky. If I thinned down my paints too much, then they would just leave watery streaks and not actually layer, and if I added just a bit more paint, then it would leave a very harsh contrast line when I added some highlight layers. I started Steel Gray, mixed in some Baharroth with the gray, then almost pure Baharroth, and then pure baharroth, so I don't really understand why the contrast between layers were so harsh. Here is a picture of my piece to show you what I mean - i.redd.it/q16u64bjcvqy.jpg - You can see specifically what I mean on his forearms. Do you know where I went wrong? Sorry for the long-winded message, and if you're too busy to answer me then I understand completely :) Cheers!

Hi Julian! Firstly I must say I think you've done a great job with your frost giant! I do see the issue you mention and I have a few thoughts: Firstly if you're progressing from really quite dark to quite bright in layers then you will need to increase the brightness gradually (which I guess you actually have done). Secondly, every paint behaves differently and it could be that Baharroth Blue's high pigmentation is making it tricky to layer with: You might try mixing some Temple Guard blue with some White Scar to achieve a similar tone and see if it's any easier to work with. Finally, if you're using water to thin with (which I do) you may like to try medium instead which may help achieve thinner layers with less streaking/separation of the pigments. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the reply! I really appreciate you take your time to help out your community. By far you're my favourite painter on KZbin. Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to try it out next time I paint something neon blue ;)

still is cool, though did wish to see mice and mystics, but either way, I've finally got Zobicide and now I'm going to get more paints and start painting with your tutorial, thxs so much for the videos

Thanks Alexander! I may well pick up M&M to play with my daughter so I might still cover it at some point.. :)

I suggest getting the original and trying it out, before the expansions, does take time to learn but is a very fun table top game, plus I do wanna say that the 1st expansion Heart of Glorm is difficult to find, and can be rare (I had barely found 2 at a store in lubbock texas, and even the sight has been out of stock for a while) though mice and mystics original and 2nd expansion downwood tales is still available and can be found at tabletop games. (plus they both have a lot of minatures to paint)

I just ordered this game and was curious about the painting process as i have never painted a miniature. Your video popped up and within the first 10 seconds i subscribed and liked! Amazing video quality and matching talent :) I am curious though, how often do you release videos? And, do you do a video for each mini in the game? Keep up the Great Work!!!
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I currently release one video per week, although most of those are for Imperial Assault, Descent and Zombicide. I will be painting the entire Blood Rage box however; it just might take me a while :)

Wow. How on earth did you figure out to mix those colours together to get such an interesting skin tone?!??

Hi Alex! I think I remember looking at the artwork and just playing around a bit to find a look that I was happy with :)

Could you do air-brush tutorial later? Just curious what would be the budget air brush for zenithal highlight. HP-C seems to be a bit expensive for a beginner like me.
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi again! I'd like to do a basic airbrush tutorial at some point.. I think something like the Badger 105 would be a good solid choice to get started with :)

Fantastic video, again. I'm wondering though how you store the miniatures? Currently they are in a plastic zip bag and I was considering the Broken Token Insert. But with the modeling of the bases, I fear the insert will damage the base. Do you or Cool Mini or Not have any storage suggestions?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mattias! I currently have my BR minis housed in a display cabinet, but I think as long as you don't go over-the-top with your basing they will still fit nicely in the moulded clam shell packaging that the game comes with :)

Absolutely amazing. You are an great inspiration source für painting beginners. Which paint palette do you use to mix your paints?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+SaschaSchmidt1982 Thank you Sascha! The palette is just a cheap, generic, plastic palette from a local art shop :)

Your skill is unbelievable. I can't stop watching your videos! A couple of questions: would blending be better if you do the highlights first prior to shading? Second, I don't have paints yet, but what colors would you recommend getting first? Or would it depend heavily on the set of figures? Thanks!
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Niko! I wouldn't usually put a heavy glaze over delicate highlights, but you could apply a thin glaze to help blend things together. Regarding paints - that depends entirely on what you're painting, and there's no harm in building your paint collection up gradually :)

May I ask you why don't you use a wet palette? I guess it useless to point out what kind of skills (not only in painting) you achieved. Absolutely stunning.
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much eddy! I do sometimes use a wet palette when I'm trying ideas out but for the tutorials themselves I like to use a traditional palette as it helps me keep the ratios of paint nice (hopefully!) nice and clear and easy to follow :)

Hi, I would really like to see you pain the nemesis minis when they are available. Do you think it would be possible? You are ma favorite mini painter on YT and before painting my own nemesis minis I'd like to see yours to inspire my paintings.

Evolution towards airbrush and highlight priming! Again a step up :) How's the airbrush priming compared to the regular spray can priming? Really nice result again! Might have to look for a copy of blood rage now..
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom! Priming with an airbrush certainly feels a lot cleaner and gives more control, and despite the initial outlay it will be a lot more economical in the long run as spray-can primers are so expensive :)
@paintalist43918 жыл бұрын
I will add my experience with Vallejos primers as well. As Sorastro said, you use less primer for the models because you can better aim with your airbrush. But you have to wait a long time (over night) so that you can paint on it. Canprimer dries faster but so much paint will not hit the target :( I perceived no difference in the properties of the dried primers
@tompaulussen77988 жыл бұрын
Thanks both for sharing your experiences! Spraycan very quickly results in overspraying the miniature, clobbing some of the fine details. Is this less of an issue with the airbrush?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Paulussen Hi Tom! Absolutely - because an airbrush lets you control how much paint is ejected you can much more easily apply thin layers to build the tone up with little risk of over spraying :)
@BohabedOne7 жыл бұрын
Why do you sometimes use lahmian medium and others Vallejo medium? don't they do the same thing? Amazing work!

How does the snow effect powder react (if at all) to the Testor's Dull Coat, if sprayed after snow is applied? Any melting? And could you tell me where you find your custom bases I have seen you use in the past. Thank you.
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Toronto1967! The snow powder is unaffected by the Dullcote (in fact the Dullcote helps to seal it). I get my pre-made bases from: shop.microartstudio.com/ and there should be links to the specific bases in the respective video descriptions :)

Would you recommend this priming and glaze technique be used for the Rancor from Imperial Assault? I know you're probably going to do a tutorial some day, but what citadel colors would you recommend for the base colors of the Rancor?
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Noa! I don't yet know which colours I'd use to be honest; I'd have to sit down and do some careful colour testing whilst referencing multiple shots from the movies etc first. (Can't wait to receive my copy though!) :)
