I am LOVING these tutorials for Crisis Protocol :-D I just bought a set for myself, as after painting so many figures from this game for others, I wanted my own, and also to convert them for "fun." I'm converting one Hulk figure into a Weapon H figure using green stuff, acrylic rod and the thick plastic from a box of bamboo skewers I found among my bits boxes, so things are going well there, at least. Now, for those, like myself who are sado-masochistic edge model figure builders/painters/collectors, the Spider-Man figure from the core set could prove "interesting," as I found out myself. I wanted first to make the webs underneath his armpit to his waist, so tried a couple of ways. First I tried embroidery cloth, which is meshed in design, but it was just too tricky and floppy to use, unless you stiffen it with watered down PVA and repeat the process using slowly thicker layers, but then it dries rock hard, and has a tendency to snap when you try and cut/test fit the pieces for the webbing. So finally I found some sheets of dirt cheap car body mesh at the discount store near where I live (Thank you Jimmy's of Ennis, Co. Clare, yet again) and found that pushing the corner into Spidey's armpit, then marking a generous enough area to allow for trimming to fit the space and gluing (Yet another nightmare process, needing MUCH patience and a bleep button due to screaming profanities on my behalf :->), it does, after some hard work and dry runs, look very nice, and when finally glued in place (Glue the armpit first, let the glue dry thoroughly, then CAREFULLY bend/shape the under-bicep part and affix with glue, and the same for the rest of his rib-cage areas), then a little final trimming/filing of the mesh edges, and it's ready to go for the undercoat. I tried this technique first on an old 1/6th vinyl model of Spider-Man I had collecting dust, and it did work, it's just a lot trickier in "Heroic 32 mm scale" to say the least. The mesh does look a tad too large, but once it's all painted up and varnished/based (I stuck my figure on a piece of wall scenery from the box set, angled downward for a more dynamic effect), you don't notice the scale discrepancy, just how freakin' awesome it looks with attached web-wings under his arms. Now I'm thinking of how to use the car body mesh to add a stream of web shooting from his wrist held web-shooters (It never ends, once inspiration strikes. This hobby just makes more work for yourself, and evolves your skills along with it, although my stress levels are now interstellar, to say the least :-D). Anyway, still loving every tutorial you upload, as they get better each time, so please keep them coming, and I'll keep being inspired by you.

It's so difficult to highlight red like this without just making it look pink overall. This still looks very red though.

Thank you! I think keeping the highlights quite tightly focused helps, plus tempering the pink levels with the red glazes of course 😃

You can also use orange instead as the highlight if you want really saturated (gives a differenet effect though that doesnt always work as its really dependent on the surrounding colors) or light skin tones to to prevent it from getting to pastel'ish.

Hi! That's a good question, and the time I spend trying ideas out does vary quite a bit from mini to mini. I’d have used an orange instead of white to highlight the red. White always desaturates red to pink.
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joshua! Yes, adding orange (/yellow) is quite a popular way to create red highlights; in this case I wanted to push up to pure white in order to create a shiny metallic effect however, and also boost the levels to allow me to then glaze back down to achieve a stronger level of saturation than would be possible when building highlights up from dark to light. :)

Why the switch to S75?
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Good question! I chose them partly because I wanted a super vibrant pinkish red tone for the armour, and I really liked the look of the Scalecolor reds; the Antares Red in particular has a very brilliant tone. They also have a very matte finish which I find good for glazing over. 😃
@annekekramer38355 жыл бұрын
@@Sorastro About the glazing, I see other painters use S75 for glazing too, like Kujo. Is it purely the matte finish, or also that S75 has so little pigment? If it is the pigment, could you achieve the same results simply by thinning with water or lahmium medium?
@tantill1345 жыл бұрын
@@Sorastro Thanks! Yeah, their reds definitely are unique in their hue/saturation. Did you enjoy using them? Find them any different? I've had issues with consistency coming out of the bottle.
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
@@annekekramer3835 Hey mate! I think the matte finish is what makes them easy to glaze over; the consistency can of course be adjusted with water, or medium/water to your liking.. :)
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
@@tantill134 I really did enjoy working with them; I did find that some tones were more opaque, and others were much thinner (the "Blood Red" for example, which I didn't use in the end). The colours really do just "sing" in a way that I've not seen from the reds in the Citadel line, and only in a couple of the Vallejo reds. I think they do require a few layers, which for a project like this is actually ideal, because it makes it easier to boost the saturation and levels incrementally, plus I found using them quite thinned for glazing didn't leave the "streaky" finish that often happens with other paints. It's the first time I've actually used this line in a project (although I have used a few of the "Fantasy and Game" colours before) and I've probably got a lot more to learn, but I'm looking forward to seeing what else I can do with them :)

A gloss coat would completely defeat the purpose of using the non-metallic metal effect. Why would you go to the trouble of emulating how light would reflect off of metal just to then add a gloss coat that reflects light naturally? The model would look like it's constantly being lit from multiple directions or light sources, it'd be terrible.
@danielwilliamson40564 жыл бұрын
This paint job is really good, but I can’t help but feel it’s a little wasted. You’re using a lot of advanced techniques, which you typically learn by doing. Most advanced painters can paint this without a tutorial and the people that typically watch these kinds of videos are newer painters. Still like I say your painting is amazing

Thanks Lithey! I'm not sure I agree with the notion that showing more advanced techniques in a video is a wasted endeavour though; I myself have learned quite a lot from watching superior painters. 😀

This must've taken forever, as I know that glazes take FOREVER to dry.

Hi Gabriela! Unless I'm using glaze medium or something else that has drying retarder in, I actually find glazes dry pretty quickly, because the layers are so thin and watery 🙂

@@Sorastro Yes, I was assuming you were using glaze medium. It sounds like you were just blending very thinned paints in the video then.

Yep, that's what a glaze is - very thinned paint. 🙂
