The blue/green thing is more interesting than even this explanation, because it's actually a language issue. Midori is a relatively new word and historically ao has meant both blue and green. This isn't weird, many languages divide colors up differently; there is no absolute answer for what falls in which category. Japan's green traffic lights are often bluer than average because of what they're called and I've seen signs depicting traffic lights that show them as very much more blue than green. My girlfriend uses the word "ao" very much more often than "midori" and usually unless something is like a vibrant, grass green, she'll use "ao". This actually leads to mixups when she speaks English as she sometimes calls things "blue" that we would definitely call "green".
@francisnopantses110811 ай бұрын
Although even in the US for whatever reason blue-green bulbs as well as Kelly green have been considered acceptable for traffic signal heads. With the switch to LEDs they have changed again to a consistent diode green. But in the past the color really did vary across a spectrum. But yeah it's mostly about semantic space.
@84rinne_moo11 ай бұрын
Yea some words follow this pattern too like aodake (green bamboo) or aojiru (green juice) both which are more green really. Although the term “ryokucha” is pretty common for standard green tea, it uses the kanji for “midori” green.
@84rinne_moo11 ай бұрын
Although additionally I was just in Japan recently and we did a road trip and all the lights I saw looked very green. Although my husband thought some looked bluish so maybe it’s how some ppl see it? Lol
@DevynCairns10 ай бұрын
@@84rinne_moo There are international standards that regulate the range of color that's allowed, it still has to look 'green', but I do think it's generally quite a relatively blue green compared to some other places.
@tariik.h10 ай бұрын
In Germany, the "green" traffic lights are turquoise instead. But we call them "green" anyways and in pictographs they're always depicted as "real" green. I had never questioned it before. Quite interesting!

I'm sure there some Cessna 172 Skyhawks in Japan. Those have a top airspeed of 188 mph (about 302 km/h). Looking at the English Wikipedia page for Shinkansen, some of the lines reach 320 km/h. I'll concede that there could be some idiosyncrasy about the Japanese word used here for "airplane" that I missed, but taken at the subtitle translations, yes, there are some trains that are faster than some airplanes.
@FindecanorNotGmail11 ай бұрын
The mag-lev Chuo Shinkansen under construction has a top speed of 505 km/h (314 mph) There is a test track that have had tickets open to the public ... but as it isn't a regular line, does it count? If you count city centre to city centre journey, I'm sure there must already be several regular Shinkansen trips that are faster than the equivalent regular plane, when you take transit to/from the airport into account .. just as there are many other examples of that around the world.
@vkristof0111 ай бұрын
Literally my first thought was that a Cessna 172 cruises at like 120 miles, way below the average shinkansen. If we are talking in general, trains go faster than planes in Japan.

I really wonder if Dogen was able to retain enough of his original identify after immersing himself into the Japanese culture SO MUCH so as to speak the language as well as he does. Indeed, to speak a language fluently is to be able to adopt to a very high degree the mannerisms and cultural values of that country. Especially Japanese. I find this hard to do as, just like I disagree strongly about various things from my origin culture of America, I also feel the same way about some things from the Japanese culture. Thus I'm stuck in the middle and don't think I'll ever be able to speak Japanese well enough to be considered 'fluent' in the language.
@childofcascadia10 ай бұрын
I dont know about that. I speak (but not read) Japanese at a conversational level, albeit with an American accent, but native Japanese speakers have no issue understanding me. Im extremely culturally a pacific northwesterner. I have never spent much time in Japan. Culture defines language, not the other way around. If you are conversationally fluent, you will have no problem talking in the language to native speakers regardless of your own culture.
@Sparky_00710 ай бұрын
I can speak conversationally. Enough to have general conversations. But still lack some grammar and vocabulary that can make it rough. Outside of that the difficulty is all the formality levels, needless counting methods, the mixing of hiragana/katakana word exceptions, the Kanji and add the ON/KUN meanings, sonkeigo and the like. It's just a very complicated language. French is way easier for me.
