Robert Sorby Ring Tool Must have or gimmick? Is this a tool everyone should have or just something to take up space in the tool rack? I explore this tool for the first time and hollow an end grain bowl. Watch and see what my thoughts are on this tool.

I too have just bought a second hand ring tool, and like yourself have struggled to find a lot of information about it. Enjoyed your video and thank you for sharing it. I will certainly give my new ring tool a go. Take care

You attributed the vibration to the length over the tool rest. Yet the longest reach was to the bottom of the bowl and it did not vibrate then. Could the vibration be due to the angle of the cuter? The angle does change some as you come up the side of the bowl. You certainly were getting a smooth finish cut with the tool. At least very good on wet wood. I wonder how it does on dry? But the real question is: Does this tool do something that no other tool does? Or, does it do something better than other tools? Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Actually because of the angle of the tool rest it was when I was on the side that it was hanging over the most. As long as i kept the over hang less than 1.5 inches it was fine over that it started to chatter. Which is excatly what I would expect from any tool with a shaft that size. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

Dean, thanks for the demo. I have one of these which I bought about 20 years ago. It came with the conical grinder, long since lost, which I never used, just sharpen the outsides with a diamond paddle. I agree that the tool can be grabby if you're too aggressive or have the angle wrong. I have a curved tool rest, which I use if it will fit into the bowl. and this helps with the chatter. I don't do many endgrain bowls, and I kinda forget I have the tool sometimes. Anyway, you have given me some ideas for some small walnut pieces I have in the shop.

It looks like it would be a good tool, given time to discover the quirks. It keeps hot shavings from hitting the heel of your support hand, so that's good! I have to wear framer's gloves. I guess I'm a wuss. 🙂

Great demonstration of the ring tool. I wouldn’t call it a must have. But wouldn’t call it a gimmick either. I have one that is totally dull at this point. Never thought about trying to use a diamond hone on it. Will now. Thanks for sharing Dean.

Thanks, Dean. I bought a termite tool (same as the ring tool) when I was first starting out. Did one project with it (a deep hollow for an Ambrosia Maple cocktail shaker). Chatter was noisy - did not know to try to get the tool rest as close as possible at that time. I put it in the tool drawer after that and never touched it again. May have to give it another try now after watching your video.

Thanks Dean! Always appreciate an honest evaluation. A curved rest would probably go a long way towards taming the vibration but you have such a mastery of the bowl gouge (and your ball end cutter) I don't see the ring tool being a major part of your arsenal. Might be an interesting option for someone just starting out?

Another great video Dean, that tool looks one of those hold on and go for a ride tools. Looks like a nice finish though. I’ll never get used to my new Nova Chuck Lefty Tightie function. My 2 other chucks work correctly. I’m afraid if I ever get used to it I’ll start driving on the wrong side of the road. 😀

Like a dummy. I got in a hurry to get another tool up and running.. so I pulled off the motor on my lathe thinking it would be a quick answer for powering another tool. Welp, it not only wouldn’t fit my application but I broke pieces that were important to the operation of the lathe… then after about a year of not being able to physically do anything, it just seems like a giant job and I kick myself for being such a fool. I’ve gotten pretty good aim with those feet by now! I’d take it somewhere to get it up and running again but I don’t have a clue at where that might be. I just want my lathe back or even better, a small metal lathe and mill I could learn to make some of my own tools.. who knows maybe even make the parts I broke on my poor wood lathe.

Thanks for the video. I have seen those ring tools and didn't know how they were used. You may not have used it much more than this video but how do you think it compares to the double end ball mill hollowing tool that you made? I enjoyed that video also and made myself a hollowing tool. I used it to hollow out a scoop and look forward to using it again. Happy Turning!

Glad it was helpful! The reality is the first cut I ever made with this tool is on the video. As far as comparing them I think the ball mill is more versatile. This particular ring tool would never work for deep hollowing. Thanks for Watching!!

Thanks for the review. I have 2 1/2” Thompson bowl gouges that have a lot of chatter. Sharpened just like my 5/8” Pinacle bowl gouge which is awesome on same piece of wood. Any reasons for such chatter?
@DeansWoodworking
@DeansWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
on a 1/2 inch tool if it is hanging over the tool rest 2" or more you will get chatter. The 5/8 is a larger shaft and you can extend it a little more. Thanks for Watching!!!
