Harpoons, Tomahawks and air-to-air missiles are powered by Turbojet engines to maintain speed after the rocket booster burns out, they could not maintain that speed/altitude on their own Ballistic missiles approach their target without power, but they are working with gravity not against it EDIT: I've been corrected myself on air-to-air

That first mission. 2 torpedoes, 2 sunk subs who didn't see it coming. Efficient. Beautiful.

It certainly is very satisfying when that happens. Less so when they turn when the torp is about 3/4 of the way there and it moves out of their baffles and then then detect, active ping and try and drop missiles on your head (not an issue with Tangos, luckily). However, the Trafalgar is pretty much cheat mode in this game, at least in deep water. I play it in Ft (I'm a UK child of the 70s, so I'm totally messed up with metric & imperial measurements. Feet for height, miles for length and cm/m for anything smaller!) - anyway, go down to the subs limit of 2000 feet and you're pretty much untouchable by any soviet torp.

a tip when using missiles on a target with anti-missile defenses, use the keyboard hot keys to select the missiles and fire them as close together as possible, and to launch them from a more shallow depth if there's no imediet surface threat. what likely happened when you fired on the Sverdlov is by the the time the second missile was in range the first had already been shot down.

The only logical reason I could see for the Sverdlov to do as it did other than 'if we sink in less depth than the ship we can salvage supplies before we go ashore' and 'AI jank' is 'If we get shallow enough, maybe we can detect the sub enough to get a firing solution and shell the bastard'.

The designation SSK was originally used by the US Navy in the late 40s to designate any submarine with sensors and modifications to allow for the specific targeting of enemy submarines, as opposed to ships without these which were effectively limited to attacking surface vessels. As you thought, the K was a designation for a hunter-killer style submarine. As nuclear propulsion replaced diesel-electric engines for submarines in the 50s it was initially thought that a small, cheaper hunter-killer submarine could be designed SSKN, however it quickly became apparent that the concept was only marginally cheaper than a larger nuclear submarine and would have significantly less capabilities than it's larger alternative. Due to this the US Navy moved towards giving all submarines the sensors and capabilites to attack other submarines, and thus the K designation became redundant. The designation SSN was then used for all submarines the US Navy built as nuclear propulsion was favored exclusively. The introduction of ballistic missile submarines led to the designator B, and G for guided missile submarines. The K designation was initially rendered obsolete, and fell out of use as a designator in the late 50s, with diesel-electric submarines, with or without hunter-killer features being designated as SS, and nuclear submarines designated SSN. Since then the designator SSK was reintroduced by other NATO navies specifically to reference diesel-electric submarines. I've not seen any evidence of why, but I imagine it is at least in part due to the negative connotations of the letters 'SS' since WW2.

Love these videos, it’s my favourite thing on KZbin at present. Can I just correct some details on the Harpoon UGM-84 missile however. It has a solid rocket booster to launch it out of the water and into its initial position (the big fiery smoky “launch”), however it doesn’t just glide from there on, it’s cruise stage is powered by a Teledyne CAE J402 turbojet. This is more fuel efficient, lighter and doesn’t give off a fire or smoke trail behind. The surface launched RGM-84 variant also uses a solid rocket first stage, whereas the air launched AGM-84 does not need this and just has the turbojet. Also, the UGM-84 and other Harpoon variants are high subsonic speed, around 460 knots, not supersonic, which would be 666 knots plus.
@MG_Steve2 жыл бұрын
btw, the harpoons have an turbojet engine on them, the rocket is just a boost stage. They're also subsonic. Anti Air tend to be glide missiles.

So, I'm watching on my PS4, and commenting on my phone . A note about the Sverdlov, I believe they are light cruisers with 12 6 inch guns in 4 turrets, 2 super firing forward and 2 super firing aft Very interesting design, perfect for shore bombardment . You mentioned the Sverdlovs sound level, saying it's really loud The ship is much louder when it's firing it's main battery, though I'm sure you wouldn't hear that on sonar

One interesting thing I picked up on in my various deep dives (pun very much intended) was that the early Soviet submarines were so noisy that nato forces nicknamed them the 'bellowing cows'. That was of course until an American spy ring (The Walker Spy ring) decided on a get rich quick scheme and sold the Russians many secrets, including engineering documents on how to make submarines much much quieter. In lieu of the spy rings discovery they dubbed the Victor III submarine, the Walker class. As you can imagine this sort of espionage really hurt the Americans and Nato as a whole. A very large gap in the acoustics of submarines had been closed within a matter of a few years. All because of a few people experiencing financial troubles sold out their countries secrets as a way out.

If you enable the game's omniscient-god mode, you can see what the AI is doing when it can't detect you (specifically, what routines the AI is running). One of the modes it moves into is 'move towards the player' (regardless of whether it can detect you or not). This means you often have ships move towards you even when you're running completely silent and undetected. Probably makes sense from an arcade-y perspective to make the game more fun, but can be a little frustrating when you're desperately trying to be sneaky.
@mirrorsandstuff2 жыл бұрын
There is admittedly a similarly blind 'move away from player' AI mode.

January 12th, 1985, 6:00 PM Sistranda, Norway An attempted naval invasion of Trondheim has ended in disaster for Soviet forces. An entire task force of seven warships has been sunk in the approaches to Trondheim by NATO forces. A NATO spokesman has not disclosed what methods were used to neutralize the task force. Shore-side witnesses, as well as the crew of a fishing trawler, attest to seeing missiles explode above the sea. Other vessels in the task force took damage below the surface before sinking, indicating the use of torpedoes. The failed invasion could indicate an over-extension on the part of the Soviets. Analysts have surmised that the Trondheim operation was a logical extension of the Soviet campaign in Norway. A successful landing in Trondheim would have built upon Soviet successes in Andoya, where they were able to diminish the capabilities of NATO naval forces. However, it is becoming clear that this attack on Trondheim strained Soviet supply lines and capabilities at this time. Surviving sailors of the Soviet task force paint a more grim picture of the operational capabilities of the Eastern bloc. Though powerful, the Warsaw Pact forces have struggled to keep up the supply levels needed for offensive operations. Indeed, the Trondheim task force was forbidden from retreating, leaving success or surrender as the only options. The few sailors and soldiers rescued from the freezing Norwegian sea confessed to being harshly driven and under supplied. In the most dramatic incident of the Trondheim attack, the Soviet cruiser 'Sverdlov' beached itself on the shore outside of the town of Sistranda. Civilian onlookers were shocked when the cruiser rammed itself into the beach. Sailors then crowded the warship's decks and poured onto the beach with their hands up in surrender. The ship was rocked by two explosions shortly after landing, prompting a hastier evacuation of the vessel. The sailors were taken into custody by the local police until they could be turned over to the Norwegian military. Civilian reaction to their arrival was mixed, with some insulting the "inntrengers" (invaders), while others brought blankets and warm drinks to the prisoners. Some civilians reported seeing an admiral, restrained or handcuffed, being escorted from the vessel by other officers. Sverdlov crew were noncommittal when asked if the vessels beaching was an act of mutiny. Some analysts believe this could indicate discontent within the Soviet navy from shipboard officers towards their higher ups. Enlisted sailors expressed relief that, for them, the war was over. They are currently being held within a community hall until they can be transported to a prisoner of war center. Their former ship, the Sverdlov, continues to burn on the shore of the small Norwegian town.
