Honestly, episodes with no combat is just fine. It's fun watching Galatia stabilize and grow. I also remember the old AARs - lots of big sprawling screenshots and in-character or in-universe dialogue. You used to see a lot, especially for games like Civ IV, Galactic Civilizations II, and of course, Total War. Good times, those.

Now I'm almost 33 and your original comment just unlocked old memories of this really good AAR that was based on Empire TW's Prussia. I believe an ideal balance between the Historical stance of the Celts of Sacking then Leaving and a need for territory and resources to build could be to take your home region, and then sack whatever territories are on the periphery of Galatia et Cappadocia, or preferably, coerce them into tributary states that give you gold and food to avoid having their houses burned down every other month. Would also make for an intriguing way to play the game, if you ask me.

I've also enjoyed AARs in the past, not with Total War but on the forums for Hearts of Iron 2 Darkest Hour. In particular I remember one that was a democratic United States Kaiserreich playthrough that ran all the way to the end of the timeline, it included descriptions of fronts and units fighting, and even included some historical images inserted at points. That stuff was great

I'm enjoying the intros as both a fan of the game and as someone who studied Iron Age mortuary practices for my masters! With the embalmed heads and skull cups, plus practices even weirder (to us) than those.

Did you know: In times gone by, there were 13 months in the calendar year? Sept = 7, Oct(agon)=8 Dec(agon) = 10. Winter was considered Jan - March and the first day of spring was the 1st of April. (April fools Day) to mock us all that the calendar is not what we think it is.

I'd imagine a purge would be useful as a coup de grace- You've got all but one faction on your side, and have spent a while weakening the disloyal one down to 4%, thus allowing you to wipe them out in a purge

The Suleukids often dont tend to last that long in Rome 2, using syria as a loot'n'scoot territory might be something you want to consider.

I love this style of gameplay. I mentioned on one of the livestream VODs that I'm doing an Elder Scrolls Total War game right now and one of my chief complaints is just the sheer amount of battles. Like I'm still having a good time, but yeah I really do think I'd prefer fewer battles and more empire building. Cause otherwise going to war is just inconsequential.

Fun fact about your little excursion regarding roman carthaginian "friendship" it is also present in DEI. When you play as Rome and i assume as Carthage too you start of with a non aggression packt and traderights with the other faction.

I like the balance of cutting some turns and including us for the highlights. Everything is interesting, even without battles. The political aspects of this, especially the colorful cast of characters, has made this my favorite TW LP of yours yet. Top notch, Dave.

18:15 This is definitely true for vanilla Rome 2, but for DEI you also have to consider the effects on population; like your own recruitment, the rebels' recruitment comes out of region population. Doesn't matter so much in the later game when it's faraway provinces that are rebelling, but in the early game (and especially if the rebellion spawns in your home region) it can be devastating for your warrior/noble class population growth. I had this happen to me during a Saba campaign - I literally lost population through rebels and unit replenishment faster than the pop growth rate and eventually zeroed out all classes.

You have inspired me to Aedui/Galatian walkthrough in old Europa Barbarorum mod, modded to run on BI. I have great fun, winning long and gruelling war with Arverni and Casse and setting my sights for Massalia and Greek and Poenician colonies!

How stable is that? I liked original EB more than EB2, but the stability was horrendous. Too heartbreaking to endure after investing so many weeks into a campaign and winning so many critical battles by the skin of my teeth. If I remember right, it ran ok if disabling all but one processor core, but for me that was 2 or 3 processors ago. 😂

@@mephistophelicpierogi I guess it's dependent on the rig... I installed 4gb patch, downloaded missing dll. and this worked as a charm. So far no save corruptions, not a single ctd, I am counting my blessings. Sometimes old games just hate your computers, and sometimes they run smoothly with minimal sacrifices to the Great Old Ones.

Another truly fantastic intro, I generally love Total War but always struggle to get into longplays of it because it can come across as very dry map-painting. But you bring a sense of personal connection to the story that I haven't been able to find in other videos I have watched.

Hey dave, the reason the eqypts wouldnt sign a Non Agression is because they didnt have any reason to, the AI has no designs on your territory and are geographically unable to recah you easily, Non Agression is just not politically necessary

Your intros are wonderful Dave, it's a lovely way for you to share some of your knowledge on the ancient world and the Celtoii, are people who I have ashamedly little knowledge, so it's delightful to learn! And the fewer but more decisive battles style of gameplay is just delightful, the meat and veg of every good tw game is on the campaign map, and Rome 2 with the Divide Et Impera seems to have done a fantastic job with that balance

I used to never use the Purge ability, as like you I looked at the effects and decided it could never be worth it. However having played many campaigns now I see it is actually essential, if you don't want certain factions to have a runaway power curve. If you find that one party is becoming uncontrollably powerful - a common occurance I find - then you can use this, but you need to have a decent amount of excess loyalty or it will result in civil war. One way to gain excess loyalty is through research techs. It is best done before said party becomes too powerful from what I have found, so you need to identify which one is becoming problematic early on, say before turn 50 or 60 ideally.

The public order system really does make no sense. Even the common people of one city would have little investment outside of it. If another settlement was doing poorly, chances are they wouldn't care, or more likely not even know. And this applies to society for a looooooooong portion of human history.

I wouldn't be surprised if I sunk a thousand hours into the first EB mod - there was extensive reading. 😅 I never played Rome 2 modded, whatever you are running here reminds me a lot of those days. As far as, native languages and it taking forever to accomplish anything exciting. I enjoy it, but perhaps have become less patient over the years, and wouldn't engage in such an activity myself. Good for a watch now and again though, keep at it. Oh right, the AARs. I have no idea what forums I prowled on, probably whoever hosted the EB mod. I read a lot of AARs and some people were quite skilled. Quite a bit of nostalgia associated with those days.

Used to be, you could join a faction in a war against Lydia for example without declaring war on their ally. Not sure if that still works, but that would also give you the option to go for the Ptolemies instead to appease Seleucid

To elaborate, I meant, joining the war against Lydia with one of their enemies, but at the same time attacking the Ptolemies and potentially any further (distant) enemies of the Seleucids. This always helps me build better relationships with them. That way you only need to worry about defending your sparse coastal borders from the Ptolemies if you in turn just use the join war faction with the Seleucids against the Ptolemies and avoid getting into a immediate war with any Ptolemean ally.

I enjoyed those AARs as a youngster, especially on the Paradox forums - again, sadly a lost art mostly. Videos are fun, but they take a lot more time to watch than even a really in-depth historical AAR.

I do like the RP idea of the Celts getting bonuses for having one tribe in more control rather than the tyranny penalty gained with the Roman political system, especially the focus on foreign diplomatic bonuses. Makes sense as having the political pull to control the myriad of confederated tribes would stop random incursions and raiding of the local as well as nearby foreign populace!

Maybe check if Bythinia will give you money if you join their war against Lydia, this way you can try to avoid the Seleucids' wrath. And that could be in character for Galatians, it is like the Bythinians hired you as mercenaries again.

I came here just to see if I want to buy Rome 2, and get an amazing history discussion and reenactment. :) Looking at the Steam page though, Paradox is doing what they seem to be doing with every game....having $130+ dollars in DLC. This alone puts up a wall for me to not buy it just because I feel that I am not getting a full game. Would you suggest the 'Must Haves' DLC that I would need to buy with the base game? EDIT - My only ask is if you could limit the screen scrolling that you do when you are just moving around the screen for really no effect. It is disorienting and causes me motion sickness. LOL But you do how you feel you need to do.

In base Rome 2 Galatia can raise female generals, but I guess the mod removed that ^_^ I'm fairly certain the british and germanic tribes can have female generals though.
