Plenty of things would need to improve to make a decent Lord of the Rings Total War, but you have to admit if it was done right it would be a BANGER! It would be really great but they would have to use a new game engine for that... because even if we get most of the improvements you mentioned in the video but if the units are still "blobbing" together in melee combat or that the cav does not charge through line as is should instead of charge an "blobb" together with the melee units, the battles would still feel kind of the same as the ones in the older series... I am really a fan of the historical titles and have been missing the formations in Warhammer for example but there is really the need for more strategic and tactical use in battle... just formations do not cut it in my opinion because the whole army movement, army deployment in proper "army formations" (not unit formations) and the way battle were fought also needs improvement... sieges were mostly never fought in a battle and they did not charge straight ahead.. the could be system so could bombard the city/keep/etc. with siege engines in a proper way for a few days/turns and than charge... there is also the need to keep the supply lines protected... because if you cut the supply line of the sieging army they would have to abandon the siege... and there is much more that could be improved .... but as I said without a engine I think it would fall short because they have to deliver a new proper TotalWar title next because with the Phrarao disaster and the new upcoming titles like Manor Lords will be released this year, there should be high pressure on CA for that and we can only hope that they deliver a proper good TW title.... at least that is my opinion...

I’m all for a Lord of the Rings total war, but Id rather have a high quality medieval 3 or empire 2 at this point in time. I know asking for a high quality version of either those two titles is a lot these days lol, but I think that’s their best bet- especially a medieval 3. Make lord of the rings after they redeem themselves with a good, grounded historical title with a new engine

I just want a game that puts the focus on a NATION instead of a character. Like Pharaoh could be a great game. I don't know, I don't care, cuz I play a single dude leading something instead of a nation. I also want to go away from the stupid design of 1 settlement, 1 army start that CA has been doing since WH1.
@TheMajesticCapybara8 ай бұрын
Agreed. Its very difficult to distinguish factions especially if you aren’t familiar with the time period or culture to have factions named after people. Same with 3K records mode. I really liked that but it was hard to tell what side was what. Now I can see if it happens organically during a campaign in which you’re an empire and you end up having a large civil war and go into some sort of “civil war mode” or something but have it be temporarily until one side in the civil war prevails and then have the empire or divided empire return to original faction names

That's what is worrying me about this. After all, when CA released the desert factions for Rome II they coded it so that the already existing mod making them playable wouldn´t work, so eliminating the competition. Therefore I wouldn´t think the suits to be above taking iurstical actions agaisnt LotR mods for their older titles, should they think they could meddle with their sales numbers...

There is such an awesome mod for Crusader Kings - Crusader Wars. Its meaning is that you play a company in the game itself, but as soon as the battle begins, you can switch to Total War. This mod works on the standard vanilla version of the game, and there is also an addon to work with this mod. When I invaded the lands of Gondor for Isengard and, together with Mordor and the Harads, set up a dump of more than a hundred thousand soldiers under the walls of Minast Tirith, I experienced aesthetic pleasure. Well, then it was fun to drive out the Gondor rebels along with other Gondar lords who recognized the power of the Eye.

They could give it the Warhammer total war treatment as well, Game 1 Total War Middle Earth The First Age, Game 2 Total War Middle Earth The Second Age, Game 3 Total War Middle Earth The Third Age. The payoff for that final game coming out would be IMMENCE, plus the have time to completely iron the game out and that third game would most likely be counted the #1 Lord of the Rings game of all time. Sparking interest in the lesser known but arguably GRANDER first age story more fantasy elements and 2nd age less and 3rd age less and more realisitic.

@Atrox1518 ай бұрын
Definitely an opportunity to change many things. I feel since the start of Total War, the central defining element or selling point has always revolved around combat. If CA can explore opportunities to innovate the combat system, then it would demonstrate the ability to make change while listening to the fanbase. For example, sieges always seem linear, but there are many different kinds of sieges with some based on attrition, combat, or location. Also, why should the siege be based on one primary fight? Could be about capturing certain objectives like capturing a redoubt or an important focal point on the map. Also there could be bonuses or penalties for quickly surrendering a town like in Napoleon. This would have an overall effect on morale, economy, recruitment, etc. I also think that the line must be made between historical and fantasy and the two should not be intertwined lest we become misguided and confused. A historical TW game should contain no fantasy elements. It's frustrating as fan, because I see so much opportunity on remaking what Total War games could be from the maps to battles itself. There will be trial/error along the way, which is part of the experience but at least I couldn't fault CA for not trying something totally different.

I'm a huge Lotr and Total War nerd and would love a combination of the two, but at the same time I don't see how that would work well. 1. The entire War of the Ring fits very poorly into a Total War setting. I mean, ultimately there are actually only two “alliances” fighting against each other. All the history and lore in between takes place alongside the conflict. So how should it be implemented, regardless of the time period? If you were to use the third age as the setting, which would be the smartest for marketing reasons, then you also have to ask yourself which characters belong to which faction? Where do you put Legolas, where do you put Gandalf, where does Aragorn find his place? Were the hobbits allowed to declare war on Rohan? Can Gondor ally with Mordor? If not, does the TOtal War concept still make sense here? It's all pretty complicated if you want to do it properly and seriously. :/ 2. Considering the cost of the license and creating all the characters and mechanics, a single game would be too expensive. Like with Warhammer, you would have to split it into several parts to make it financially viable, which again, does not fit well with lotr.

The holy grail of TW games for me would be 40k, LOTR and Med 3. But now that I see Star Wars it would actually be pretty cool, since I don't see an Empire at War 2 ever happening. And they could easily reuse systems from the hypothetical 40K title to make a SW game work.

Basically : many franchises would be relevant for a Total War Game, I'm thinking about Game of Thrones, The Elder Scrolls or The Witcher (note that they are al set in some kind of Medieval atmosphere) but clearly the Lord of The Rings would be the definetly best game for a Total War. (I'm also thinking of some kind of Pirates of The Carribean Total War as well but that's another story).

Great video! I unfortunately do not share your optimism in CA's ability to deliver on a LOTR title. At least not right now. I do however have some optimism for say, napoleon 2. The current engine handles projectiles better than melee engagements and there are some good candidates for if they opt towards the hero focused model CA has used the past 8 years. Whatever game is next for total war needs to be good enough to stabilize CA financially. CA could go bankrupt or Sega could decide to close down them if their next 2 projects don't bring in some money, and after pharaoh they hopefully realize another quick cash grab will be a death sentence.

No, I hope CA doesn't make a Total War LoTR. I have played Med 1, 2, Rome 2, Attila, Shogun 2, Empire/Nap, and all 3 Warhammer. 1st Mechanics, my favorite for wars and fighting was Med 2, but I thought Attila had some good strategy parts to the campaign. I completely hate the mechanics that limit or shrink our armies in the field, this might lead to more specific key battles, but loses the aspect of a total war, and this mechanic has become more and more prevalent in their game titles. Med 2 allowed a large number of armies to march and fight and take territory. And siege battles could be key and be won or lost, with the new titles it is usually very one sided and not worth defending a place 2nd reason for not wanting is that, any game they release will be imperfect, which is why modding exists; to add more units, depth, or just a different take on the lore. Currently playing the Last Alliance mod, a fun start for a mod and want to see where it leads. I have sunk hundreds of hours into DAC, which really expands the story with its own lore. CA has shown less deference to modders for the last decade, and if they have their own LoTR game, then they will need to push against existing mods that may share or use their assets. Keep LoTR total war in the hands of the modders, because I bought Attila with the SOLE desire to play the mods 1212 AD and Dawnless Days eventually (not that I did not play the base game anyway) I think CA's best game was Empire, the scale of the campaign map, the ship battles, the land musket battles were all fantastic, it fell short in many areas due to some limitations or bad implementation, but I think a redo on the concepts of Empire's whole world experience build a large campaign map (a complaint I have heard from Britain, Troy, and now Pharaoh) and build back a larger amount of trust or even care from the player base that wants epic large map campaigns that take 50 hours+ to achieve victory I have 1k hours in Med 2 500 hours in Empire ~800 hours on the Warhammer franchise

LoTR TW would be the next best thing, for me, after a sequel to .....FoTs/Napo/Empire. Either accurate fantasy or accurate history. Why not? (Please CA!)
@Annatar8 ай бұрын
Graphical enhancements aren't that important. TW games have looked good enough since Shogun 2 and modders have managed to make them look even better. What we truly need in order to make a LOTR or new historical TW game playable is: 1. A deeper campaign where CA takes a page from Crusader Kings and actually creates a great middle ground between what it was in Rome/Medieval 2, and what Paradox games do. 2. Proper tactical field battle formations that work the way they did in Rome 1, but better. Formations that do more than just add and substract numbers to unit stats, but actually affect the way the units fight. Mixed formations like shield wall in front, missiles rear so units like Persian Immortals can stand and fight while shooting, as well as square with missiles in center. Missiles should be blocked if they hit the shield wall, not just be blocked because of some dumb chance to block stat is buffed. Different fire arc settings for archers. High-arc arrows do less damage but hit over obstacles. This would be essential for archer-warrior units like elves and rangers. 3. Proper unit mass and collision to make it impossible for units to just pass through enemy formations. Exhaustion should reduce unit mass and collision to make it possible for a fresh enemy to start to push back tired units. Heavy cavalry charges into flanks or unbraced units should break formations and cause terrible casualties. Unit mass should be directional, only being massive in the direction braced, and stack depending on how deep the ranks are. 4. Larger battles already. Epic Battle Simulator can handle millions of soldiers on screen. Why can't CA mange even 50k soldiers without the framerate dying? Personally control up to 3 full stack armies and allow proper AI delegation of subgroups or whole other armies with multiple options regarding their behavior. Allow player to designate where an AI controlled army should go and what to do. Personally controlling 60 units is totally doable and would work great with AI delegation. 5. An AI that can actually fight as an army with proper battle lines, reserves, rotating units in the front line, flanking and using culturally appropriate strategies. No more having multiple units attack a single point in a line and getting enveloped. No more blobbing masses. The AI should know that if a unit can hold a position for 5 minutes then there's no point in sending in more units. Use them to flank, or to rotate out the tired units. 6. A diplomacy system AT LEAST as good as the Three Kingdoms system. 7. REALISM in battles. Obviously we don't want to spend hours on a single battle, but a huge battle should take at least 30 minutes to develop, even more if there are lots of high tier units that won't break easily. This is also important to balance on the campaign side. It should take a very long time to replace a huge army that is lost in battle to make these decisive battles actually feel important. A pops system would make suffering multiple crushing defeats catastrophic and basically end any chance of proper resistance for years to come. And unit caps for elites and professionals that are tied to how many high tier recruitment buildings you have in your nation would prevent spamming. You HAVE to use levies in some capacity to fill out armies. 8. Strategic options for armies in the campaign map. Players should be able to designate a fall back point for armies to retreat towards. More stances, like an anti-ambush cautious march stance which is slow but reduces ambush chance, etc. Army behaviors for automatic enemy-turn reactions, like attack, follow or avoid enemy armies that move through a specified area. Battle map preview to choose army's starting location in case of battle in this tile. Attach friendly armies to follow another main army so that they will appear together in battle. Come on CA! THE ONLY WAY I will ever consider even trying a new TW game is if CA can actually deliver on those points. It's not even that hard. Just spend less time and money on marketing crap games and use it to develop a true next-gen TW that has been lacking since Shogun 2 (slightly) improved upon its predecessor.
@portman89098 ай бұрын
Graphics do matter, and we shouldn't give devs a free pass on this. Now that doesn't mean making super realistic graphics at the cost of other gameplay elements, but with our PC's being faster now and having better software tools available. It's much easier to make good graphics than ever before. The games have gotten a lot better visually since Shogun 2 and me personally wouldn't be happy with a new game having those graphics.

@@Annatar How does adding more units make the game better? There’s only so much one general can realistic micro manage. Maybe if the AI improved you could assign more groups to be controlled by AI ? But improving graphics is great for cinematics and being immersed in that world without causing gameplay problems

even tho I'm pro Lotr I would rather have historicaly accurate game for now. It's been 18 years since medieval and 11 since Rome.

Hell no. We don't need Warhammer's dull dad we need cutting edge versions of Medieval, Empire and Troy + Pharaoh combined campaign.

warcraft or lotr would be great. But like anything else, it has to be well made any way.

Where was Gondor when westfold fell ?

Gondor did not know of rohans struggle, while rohan also had enough forces by themselves, if saruman did not controlled theoden, which gondor also did not know. Kinda overused quote, that is a move thing only. The better question is: where was Theoden the entire time, when his people suffered outside? :P

my list would probably be: lotr, game of thrones and 40k. I think these could be the most intersting, dune has an onorable mention. Hope they don't do a star wars game cuz that franchise is dead

I do not have any interest in a Lord of the Rings total war and I would not buy one.
@FirstoftheAbyss928 ай бұрын
Would I love a Lord of the Rings Total War? Yes! Do I trust them to make it? Honestly no and I fear for what they'd do to the mods which have been lovingly crafted by fans for years by now. Sincerely as someone who plays Dawnless Days, Divide and conquer and Last Alliance, I can't go back to the new games and not feel disapointed. If you make a LOTR game, it can't be a cash-grab, it can't be simplified, it can't be .... because such a game has to be brilliant or it will be burned to the ground! Unlike warhammer total war, Lord of the Rings total war will have plenty of competition from already established popular mods. and if they do something like order those mods to be shut down they will only worsen the problem because than they have poisoned the fanbase they so desperatly need. If they intend to build it, it has to be a slowly, lovingly crafted masterpiece designed not just by developpers but fans of the lore and movies with the intend of crafting a 100% must buy masterpiece. Because if they don't, it will either fail hard or it must establish the base for brilliant mods....and modders don't come if there is no audience for their skill (translation= no popular game no mods)

I would sell my kidney to buy a Lord of thr Rings total war, it has been my dream for a total war since I know the franchise.

I have absolutely no faith in the results of that survey at all. The people who will be voting in it will be the same people who have enabled SEGA and CA to lead the series to the bland and bloat filled mess it is now (in between the odd “””protest””” from the community of course which is forgotten the moment a new shiny game or dlc comes out with some half baked apology). Fantasy isn’t the way total war needs to go, total war needs to get away from fantasy as quick as it can because the moment a LOTR game comes out historical is 100% finished. The tactical and strategic depth, which has taken hit after hit since the disaster that was ROME II came out, will become more and more beaten down because of even more influx of fantastical elements. Honestly a move away from melee combat is desperately needed because it’s still awful on the war scape engine. Maybe I’m just cynical but if the idiots who infest the total war subreddit are the main ones answering this SEGA will see nothing but more opportunities to squeeze money from customers. Fuck I’ve seen a lot, and I mean over 20 highly upvoted comments over the last year or so on that subreddit from people who don’t even play the games for the battles. These are the people who will be voting in this survey and eventually the game will become a disgusting watered down mess of total war and crusader kings where there’s more buttons and menus to press and read through but no depth or consequence to anything because it will be that easy and dumbed down to get as much sales as possible and games like Napoleon or Shogun II will be nothing but relics

Is it not some Swedish org that holds the gaming rights? Also WB is on the brink of bankrupcy, so any kind of income will most likely be welcome to them.

@@ragnarok6521 they both have rights. It depends on whether you want to incorporate visuals from a movie. In the case of total war, movie elements (like armor, place ..) are essential.

Personally, I think that Total War needs stick with what made it great back in the day. Solid historical games. The diversion into fantasy is what has got us where we are today. While it has undoubtedly been profitable for CA to pedal the likes War Hammer and the sort of half fantasy that was 3K, they have succeeded in pushing away many of the traditionalists. Pharaoh is, in my opinion anyway, a step back in the right direction and the fact that they are planning to introduce family trees into the game instead of all this character based nonsense is also a good thing. I am very much looking forward to any new historical titles that CA releases and sincerely hope that they have had their fill of all this fantasy based fluff. But given that the TW community seems to be a very diverse and demanding lot these days, it would seem that whatever they do someone is going to complain!

Look all i want is a new medieval, gunpowder or a Lord of the rings game in the style like rome 2, attila, med 2. Then they have my monny and il buy a new pc.
@Lifelesstoaster8 ай бұрын
CA should just hire the Dawnless Days team and give them your tools to finish their work. But CA would completely ruin a Lord of The Rings game. They’d use their current engine and make character based factions that all feel the same. The game in general would lack depth and they would blame the player for the game being a flop

Fundamentally I don't trust them with the world of LotR. The mods have been such high quality I don't think we need them. I rather see a high quality historical title - empire or medieval era in the biggest need of an update imo
