The Alliance Party MLA for Lagan Valley, Sorcha Eastwood, roasted DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson using his own words when he criticised Sinn Féin when they boycotted the Northern Ireland Executive some years ago.
The DUP are upset over the Windsor Framework, a result of a Brexit they campaigned for.

I think Sorcha is right in telling Donaldson to get out of the way if he can't or won't do the job he was elected to do. As a politician he is supposed to find solutions, work with other politicians. If he is too incompetent to do that, then he should go.

Donaldson then accused Sorcha of looking down her nose at Unionists and said it was sad that Alliance were talking about excluding parties - the DUP excluded themselves. Donaldson said it was wrong for Sinn Féin to do it, but when the DUP does it somehow it's they're the ones being wronged by the other parties

Even the ones who want to work? Most DUP representatives have second incomes, some have very, very dodgy chums in the wink wink "insurance" business and import business(usually at night) they also are farmers of IRISH=EU produce and other lucrative sidelines. The people most affected by cutting off of income would be those trying to do their job and come from mostly working class backgrounds. So punish the innocent while the guilty prosper. Yeah, that's more or less british rule in Ireland in a nutshell.

Speaking as a Scot who watched the "troubles" from across the North Channel of the Irish Sea when they were exploding bombs on each other, my view is the reunification of Ireland is long overdue. Let the Irish all go their way, we Scots can go ours, and as for the English... whatever. Sorry, Wales...
@odunadhaigh
@odunadhaigh 9 ай бұрын
"Let the Irish all go their way" If you mean let there be a united Ireland, then that will happen when a majority of people in Ireland vote for it and a majority of people in Northern Ireland vote for it. That is what we all signed up for in the 1998 UN-registered Good Friday Agreement. If held today, then one or both of these two referenda would probably fail. That is why, on the island of Ireland, we must wait for a time when they're likely to pass. It would be unethical for the British to forcibly expel Northern Ireland from the UK and forcibly make Ireland join with it.
@Leszek.Rzepecki
@Leszek.Rzepecki 9 ай бұрын
@@odunadhaigh Well, I appreciate the Southern Irish might not want the Northern Irish. I don't see why it should be Scotland's problem, which is why I support the SNP and independence from the England that created all this. I take your point, forcible expulsion from the union isn't an option, that's going to create more problems than it solves. I just want Scotland out of that union. Then you guys can fix yourselves.
@odunadhaigh
@odunadhaigh 9 ай бұрын
@@Leszek.Rzepecki The names of the two jurisdictions on the island of Ireland (32 counties) are Ireland (in the Irish language Éire) (26 counties) which covers most of the island and stretches further north than the 6-county Northern Ireland does. The "Northern Irish" as you call them consists of a dwindling British majority and a growing Irish minority. It's the British majority in NI that's causing the problem, given the hatred the worst of them for the Irish minority in NI. If the UK as a whole were to militarily expel NI from the UK and militarily force Ireland to accept Northern Ireland, then Great Britain (the island containing E, S and W) would be a problem, just as Russia currently is. The UK is controlled by a UK establishment, which means that the ordinary people of England, Wales and Scotland are not really to blame for what the UK does on the world stage; the UK is not a democratic country for the most part. I'm nevertheless glad to hear that you're not interested in a civil war within the UK, against NI, to eject it from the UK nor a war against Ireland (a sovereign independent state) in order to force it to join with Northern Ireland.

"exploding bombs on each other". There were terrorists in Northern Ireland who blew up innocent people. There were very few victims who were also terrorists, as you weirdly imply. "Let the Irish all go their own way" The Irish for the most part went their own way in 1922, when the state now called Ireland left the UK. It does not need anyone's permission (implied by "let") to continue to be a sovereign independent EU county The small 6 county statelet in the north east of the island of Ireland is in the UK along with Scotland, England and Wales. You could say, "let England go its own way", "let Scotland go its own way, "let Wales go its own way", "let Northern Ireland go its own way", but whom are you talking to when you make this 'request'.

The DUP can’t stomach the prospect of a n Irish Catholic first minister in charge of Northern Ireland. The whole purpose of the Northern Ireland state was that it was to a Protestant state where the Catholics were a minority and were treated accordingly, and that was supposed to be the status quo for eternity. Now demographics has shifted the status quo and now Catholics are outnumbering the Protestants for the first time and the DUP can’t deal with a Catholic having the whip hand, so they will use every excuse to avoid sharing power with them

A land border would not be accepted by the local communities. It isn't a threat of proscribed organisations, it's ordinary people who fundraised to buy diggers; men, women, and children who spent hours filling in craters dug by the British Army to re-open their roads. Decisions can't be imposed from the top on people when they do not consent. This has always been the real issue with decisions made in Westminster that don't work for the people living in the island of Ireland, it's not only threat of violence. As was written in 1839 (long before the IRA, or Northern Ireland itself existed) when there was a peaceful constitutional mass movement in Ireland for political reform to restore a Dublin parliament: "How can the government maintain its influence over an entire nation leagued against it? The difficulty is great" (hence the hardline faction in the UK govt stoking culture wars to divide and rule, as they are now doing in Britain since they failed to restart the troubles in Ireland) Many online commenters talk of other borders, US/Canada or Scotland/England or any other border, but they don't understand that Ireland is an island that was split by a border drawn up by a committee with no consultation with the local communities. It is not the same as a border between two foreign countries where the people identify as two different nationalities

I think you’ll find that the border in NI was established pretty much along the lines of many borders, island or not. Why do we have a small strip of land called Portugal? Geoffrey went on to say "its nothing to do with Brexit". So we can look at that statement as it being all about Sinn Fein. Or we can look at it that Mr Donaldson didnt understand what the consequences of voting for Brexit would be. It was clearly unrealistic to have a border across the island so there was only one alternative. Indeed, a member of the audience asked what his alternative was... without getting an answer (obviously) . To take that Good Friday agreement point - she directly addressed this to the Tory NI secretary and the Labour Shadow. She asked them directly to look at the way this agreement was formulated and suggested to them that they may want to adjust it to prevent a single party holding NI to ransom (effectively) to solve their political problems. In other words, if one party doesnt want to play ball, everybody else can get on with the business of governing. Can you imagine the Westminster constitution being set up in such a way that if one party didnt turn up then no business could be done? Pretty sure the SNP would be outta there tomorrow if that were the case.

For the dup having basically Catholics as the boss is painful. Much like Dublin will be their capital come the border vote.

MLAs still get paid 2/3s of their salary even after a year. If it was any other job, they wouldn’t get a dime. I think they would go back to work quickly if they weren’t getting paid for doing literally nothing.

Absolutely correct and to the point, much to the detriment of Jeffrey and his DUP, `` Democratic `` according to their title and start to practice it now , power sharing is their hallmark, yes lets have a lot of that . Its now past time to get the executive in order to deliver much awaited services to the People Of Northern Ireland. Lagan Valley Representative, Sorcha, Take A Bow .

Max, has anyone actually said to the DUP that the real reason they are refusing to take part in the assembly is the SF first minister issue? I don't follow it closely, but I have only seen people going with the DUP's Brexit "reason" for the situation.

I dont know the make up of that audience but it's interesting to hear the enthusiastic applause. Seems people are getting really fed up with the DUP and their obstructive approach.

The Alliance party policy suggestion of removing the ability of one party in the coalition to bring down the executive is effectively the end of power sharing and a shift to voluntary coalition. The difficulty the Alliance party have, in my opinion, is that they still cannot see that searching for 'normal politics' in a 'northern Ireland' context is futile

Sorcha was passionate there and her own personal stake in improving health services in n.i has no doubt inspired that passion. Her husband is fighting for his lufe,having been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer. Like many others,services are crippled by the lack of a functioning executive. Diagnoses are delayed. Many people who could have survived with less invasive procedures and less aggressive treatments are being diagnosed too late for minimal intervention for cures. It's the same across the board for many treatable diseases. It's now seven years waiting list times for some first visits to see a consultant. Going private for diagnosis is what many people are resorting to and then they're put to the top of the nhs treatment list. However,many at the top of that list get 'bumped' repeatedly and end up dying or going abroad for private treatment
