It brings tears to my eyes so much nostalgia, its the greatest cartoon ever made, such a well written story, characters & action it’s perfect.

The Dai li are like the earth bender secret police, they’re the official gold standard for earth bending. Their organization was set up by avatar Kyoshi, with the original Dai Lee being handpicked by the avatar. I could (and have) written an entire essay about Ba Sing Se and how it pertains to various cultural histories in Asia, namely China and North Korea. I find it absolutely fascinating how the writers of the show managed to take and weave in real things from our world into this fantastical one. A+ writing, always. And, also, I like how the Dai Li are literally gaslighting Jet. That's always such a "get the chills" moment in the show. Lastly, I love that they don't talk down to their audience. So many shows - especially children's shows - do this, but this is one of the many ways this show is fantastic and has stood the test of time.

If Azula had simply blasted Aang with fire from a distance while he was knocked unconscious, she and the Fire Nation could have won right then and there. Fortunately (?) for Aang, Azula is a sadist who wanted an up close and personal kill, giving Aang time to regain consciousness and ultimately stop the drill. Enter Ba Sing Se, and we meet the Dai Li. In fiction (and probably to an extent in real life), if a government agency has a bland/undescriptive name or duties, like 'protecting our cultural heritage,' there's a good chance they're up to something shady.

Also you don't need to be that strong at earthbending if there's three earth vendors per train segment. Like I don't imagine them employing a bunch of people however enough to make it reasonably easy to work an 8-hour shift without needing to take too much of a break. Also if you're heading downhill at any point if there isn't an abrupt turn or whatever then you don't technically need to be bending during that time so I would imagine there are many breaks worked within the route.
