The reason why Shin and his friends survived was explained clearer in the novel. Since the Shepherds' brains are hard to collect, the Legion has a way to preserve them in case their mechanical body is destroyed, that is transferring the data to a nearby unit. The moment before Shin's brother was destroyed, he transferred part of his data to a spare unit and since he was weaker then, the murderous instinct of the Legion couldn't control him anymore. He kept following Shin's group to watch out for them while keeping enough distance to not be detected. He friendly-fired the legion that were about to kill Shin's group and brought them to the border of the Federacy of Giad and was taken down by the Federacy force. In the anime, they symbolized this scene with Shin's brother in the knight's armor and saying goodbye in Shin's dream, there is a ruined Legion unit in the background, that's his brother's body when the Federacy took him down. When Ernst was talking to the officers he asked what the thing that took the kids to the border was.

Oh I remember that they said they found Shin and gang with a old model of a Legion mech. I always thought that mech was the one that was about to take Shin's head, and you're saying that was his brother? Man, without someone explaining this to me, I would have never known. The anime doesn't make any mention of that.

This is super interesting and explains a lot but I AM curious Does that mean the anime showing Shin’s head missing is just a fake out? I suppose it’s just obscured in hindsight tho

I really wish they somehow could explain this a bit in the anime, cuz otherwise, it's really hard to figure exactly what happened that saved Shin and the gang, cuz this transferring data of Shepherd was not even once mentioned in the anime. Just symbolising stuff like that isn't enough when we have no idea what's even going on.

@@rickchakraborty2087 I think the symbolism what quite obvious tho, rei in shin's consciousness was dressed as a knight in shining armor (I think it should've been common sense to know what this denotes) , and he also stated something along the lines of "I can only go this far... there are companions to go with you" to shin, and I think it can be concluded from that, that rei saved them in his last moment as his dying will.

6:49 got me so good AHHAHAHAHHAHHA also here's an explanation on how they survived, I got this from someone else cuz I was lazy to write one myself. (Credits to 75Nero57) COMING FROM THE LIGHT NOVEL After the events of episode 9 where Shin defeats Rei, Rei's data is being transfered to a spare Dinosauria unit, however the transfer was incomplete resulting in fragmented data. Rei is using this borrowed time that he got before he's completely gone to secretly follow Shin and his friends from a distance and watch over them, however he does not attack them nor does he call in for reinforcements. Meanwhile Shin is aware of them being tailed (forgot if it was episode 10 or 11) but does not disclose this information to the others as they're not being attacked for whatever reason, furthermore while he's aware that they're being followed by a Shephered he's unable to tell that it's his brother Rei. In episode 11 when Shin and his friends are defeated and Shin was about to be decapitated by the Legion, Rei shoots the remaining Legion down. Making sure to not get Shin and his friends caught in the crossfire and then carrying them over to Federation grounds - this is being symbolized in the post credit scene with Rei carrying little Shin. As to what exactly happened to Rei when he reached Federation grounds is unknown though it's most likely that he let himself be destroyed without resisting at all and then using his last remaining willpower to say his goodbyes to Shin in the dream sequence. The Dinosauria unit the Federation was examining was not the one Shin destroyed in episode 9 it's the spare that Rei used to save and protect Shin in episode 11.

I feel the need to point out a few major factors from this episode you guys missed, its hinted at in the anime but outright stated in the novels. Shin and co were doomed when they fought the legion in the end of season 1, they were rescued from a Dinosauria by the Federacy. Now here are a few hints as to what happened in between. Shin had left Rei's Tag back with Fido like the rest, but at the end of season 2 ep 1 Ernst returns it to him telling him it was found on his person. The second hint is the dream Shin had with Rei. Read more below - - - - In the novels we get a flashback showing that after his machine was destroyed Rei's conciousness was reactivated in a different Legion unit but due to the damage he took in the previous battle he was free from the legion programming briefly and had been stalking Shin's group in order to make sure they reached the Federacy, when things go dicey he rushed in and saved them taking them to federacy where he was promptly gunned down.

Correction. Reis tag was not with Fido. It was in Shins cockpit all along. Reis tag can be seen in episode 12 next to Shins feet. The last thing we see from Shins perspective is how Reis tag flashes cos of a light effect... which was actually an explosion. An explosion cos right as Shin was loosing conciusness the Dinosauria that tried to take Shin was attacked by another Dinosauria that, as was said in the main comment, had Reis concionsness. And all those images of Rei caring Shin in his arms where what actually really happened to the Shins group. But the hint are way to subtle for normal anime viewers to pic up on them though

​@@uberlags7022 yep, thats why we saw a flash before the title card showed up. It was simply shot by a 155mm cannon round. Even the Lowe had to check its IFF to check whether Rei's unit was a friendly or not.

Also I actually did make this guess when i first watched the anime (it just got confirmed when i read the LN) the hints are there its just not obvious unless your extra observant (or watch it many times). And lets be fair here, thats the entire anime adaption , there is a ton of nice imagery and referencing you miss out in a first viewing.

I wouldn't be surprised at plot armor in any anime at all anymore. As long as it's done in a decent way (To which they did). The show has been "Show not tell" so far and I think the comment section will enlighten you with what truly happened. Edit: Also just a clarification, Frederica's ability is to see a glimpse into the past and present of everyone she meets. Not the future, but the present. That being said, great laughs and glad you guys are kept intrigued!

Well, that also a twist. They threw us with a lot of deaths in the beginning, giving a dark tone theme, so the audience will expect a bad end at least 1,2 casualties. But "boom", all lives lol.

SPOILER!! REGARDING THIS EPISODE!! It really feels like plot armor, i cant deny that XD It is hurriedly explained that the federacy military arrived where Shins team was after a short time, since they were fighting the legion near them at the time and recived info that the legion were moving weird in the battlefield. Later in the novels (in the next arc, after the anime final), it is confirmed that the way they survided and be rescued by the Federacy was due to a Legion(Dynosauria) protecting them for some time. It was Shins brother protecting them, in the episode, when Ernst leaves and talks to the others, it is mentioned that an old model Legion was with them, that was Shins brother. Now that you know this, think again of the last scene from episode 11 and the continuation of it in this episode.

Yeah in the Anime, there is a unexplainable Legion Dinosauria that 'captured and brought them' or something, for a split second. Which is Shin's brother like the Chat said so.

Part of the explanation they give in the novel and that can be overlooked in the anime since they don't explain it very well is that Rei (Shin's brother) kept following the group with what was left of his energy, and He was also the one who saved them until the guide army arrived. That is why the moment of the meeting between Shin and Rei occurred at that moment thanks to Shin's power.

While it's too subtle, I do like that the Dinosauria chassis is damaged in a distinctly different way than the one Shin shot up. Implying either another unit running his brother's mind, or that it wasn't as badly damaged as we thought.

I think the biggest problem with the first episode is that in the finale they used the two most similar units to mask what happened. they used a Lowe then showed&mentioned a dinosaria in the hangar they were in. made the implication the anime was going for needlessly unclear

Here is a really sad fact. when Theo asks Anju if she has imagined her life if the war ends. In the background we can see a girl of the same ethnicity as Anju with a boy similar to Daiya... this is seen more clearly in the ending images. which is very cruel of this anime.

I don't get why he thinks it was such bad plot armor. You never actually see any of them die. It wasn't like Shin got his head cut off but they managed to stitch it back on. This is just standard plot armor that exists in ALL anime

I mean, the scene between Shin and Rei, his brother, was a symbolic interaction that Rei was protecting them throughout their way to the Federacy. During the last ep of part 1, that was another Dynasauria wherein Rei transferred his data and the chip that was thrown to Shin was him saying goodbye for real. Remember, this anime is a show that is full of symbolism. You should be attentive and be perceptive regarding their interactions.

They are referring to that 3 second clip of a Red Blur over a Head and are assuming that was Shin without his head.

Lmao, it's plot armor alright. The headless image at the end of ep 11 convinced me Shin was part of the legion for the months between the first cour and the second cour.

hmm its not really plot armor. The anime just ddn't show it physically on how they survived. it just showed Shin's dream being carried by his brother, we can also see that in the same EP. Ernst said that they had a Dinosauria unit with them, Dinosauria was also the type of unit Rei used. And they were captured by it. And there's also the dream, of Rei carrying him. Just piece it together and there u go, the reason on how they survived. The director probably changed this. Tho i expected for em to show it so it wont have further confusion on the Anime Onlies. . . . . If u still dont get it then. Rei's unit got destroyed, Rei's consciousness was transferred to a back up unit that Shepherds have, Rei wasnt shackled by the Legion programming, Rei followed Shin and Co. till their encounter with a Legion patrol. When Shin was almost got taken by the Lowe. Rei shot the Lowe and managed to destroy the patrol unit on his own, tho with his unit heavily damaged ofc. Rei managed to take them to the Federacy's borders in which he passed on and fulfilled on protecting his Lil Bro one last time.

That kind of info literally holds value since it gave the idea that Shepherds have spare back up units and the Legion can transfer their data to another unit if their main unit got destroyed thru the use of Eintagsfleige and the Legion's wide area network. Well, its yer opinion and i respect that. It is what it is. Some might think its plot armor, some might think it aint. I mean, if i would design a drone, wouldnt i give it the ability to transfer its data so it cannot be lost? Isnt that how Cloud and the Internet works in the first place? Aint that already obvious?
