The DLC goes back and forth between Ellie and RIley in the past, and Ellie searching for a first aid kit for Joel in a different mall. Like half of it is in the present, while Joel is injured, and half of it is in the past. That's why they chose this point in the story to do the DLC, it was the only place that made sense going by the game

In the main game, it only shows Joel getting hurt and then Joel is already patched up. The DLC goes back and forth between Ellie and Riley getting bit in the past and Ellie searching for supplies for Joel in the present. Edit: the only barnes and noble near me is in a mall. It's in Indiana btw.

9:16 We've known Ellie was bit on her forearm since the first episode--Joel and Tess made her show her forearm in the second episode a couple of times to prove that it wasn't getting worse. Ellie wore a T-shirt while running in the gym, and she's wearing a T-shirt in this scene too. You can see that she hasn't been bit yet, lol.

34:00 They send Firefly recruits-especially the ones that are very young and aren't hardened-to a Firefly operation in another QZ because it's easier to run missions when your targets are people you don't know. (See heated exchange between Ellie and Riley in the back of the Taco joint.) They also effectively isolate the recruits so that their world shrinks to their Firefly connections. They may not be fighting for "their" city, but a recruit quickly becomes dependent on the Firefly operatives there. That becomes their tribe, their family. That's how Riley sees them even before her supposed transfer to the Atlanta QZ.

Random thought, maybe there's built-in easier access to rooftops in QZs as a leftover from early on in the outbreak - mushroom zombies can't navigate stairs, ladders, handholds as deftly as non-infected people. Roofs are safer than the streets in chaos

In the game Joel gets injured significantly worse and Ellie has to fight their way out of the University, only for Joel to still collapse and Ellie can’t get him up. There’s a time skip and now you’re playing as Ellie and Joel isn’t there. You play for a while before getting conflicting messages about whether Joel’s alive, but eventually it’s revealed that he barely is. In the end we know Ellie’s best friend Riley was a Firefly and was with her at the mall when she was bitten, later dying. The DLC had parallel stories of how Ellie managed to keep Joel alive by taking him into a mall to find supplies and Ellie and Riley’s trip to the mall in the QZ. The overarching theme was how Ellie loses literally everyone, and while she remembers losing Riley she’ll do whatever it takes to not lose Joel. Before the DLC came out there was no indication that they were attracted to each other, no indication this was a “date”, just two kids trying to experience the old world, though while playing there was subtle allusion. At the time it was already controversial that they had a realistic female protagonist in a big budget game. To reveal that character was also queer was a big deal back then, especially when there hadn’t been any romance in the story yet. Story wise, learning the true nature of their relationship and that Riley actually left the Fireflies to be with Ellie, right before ultimately dying, was huge. Just some elements that I loved from the game that didn’t make it into the show quite as well.

As a kid, we use to "hang eggs". The power lines ran back and forth across the neighborhood streets....so we would take a spool of thread, throw it over the power line...then tape an egg to the hanging thread so that the egg would be suspended in mid-air right around windshield height...then we would hide in the bushes and watch as cars drove by and the egg smashed on their windshield. It was always funny when the drivers would stop their car and try to figure out what the hell just happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The mall actually looks pretty damn close to a mall just across the river called the CambridgeSide Galleria. (Which has big open skylights) It's only about a mile from the North End neighborhood (Which I think is where the QZ is supposed to be)

I love your reactions so I hesitated writing this comment but, as a girl who likes girls, this reaction made me kind of sad. You guys didn’t seem as invested in this episode the way you did for episode 3, it felt like every time a sweet moment was happening between Ellie and Riley you paused it and talked about something completely unrelated like Barnes and nobles in malls, or parkour as a teens. I’ve just noticed that female queer stories don’t seem to get the same prevalence or care as male queer stories so it made me sad that you seemed distracted in this video. As I said, I am a fan and I love your content, and still liked this reaction, I was just a bit sad that it didn’t seem to captivate you the way episode 3 did. Also, as a young queer girl, why wouldn’t Riley live in a taco shop, if you get my drift 😂😂.

As a queer person I'm kind of hurt by the way you reacted to this episode... I love your stuff normally, but it didn't seem like you guys were invested in this episode at all, and sometimes SEEING your reactions are more important than hearing them. So when you cut the silent parts out, you often cut out the most important aspect. I honestly kind of wish I'd never watched your reaction to this one, cause it just left me feeling annoyed at the unfocused way you kept changing subjects, and sad that you weren't giving this episode the attention it deserved... I think for videos where you talk about your lives or discuss things like this, they should probably be SPECIFICALLY for that, like a podcast. Love you guys' other reactions, but I'd be happy if they could focus more on the action and story in the future..

Uh, why do you guys pause the episode so much to theorize when it really is just "let it play out and watch for 10 minutes". They're sending her to Atlanta because there are almost no QZs left. Frank in episode 3 said the Baltimore one is gone. the KC one is gone. The only other ones you hear about are Boston and Atlanta. Ever wonder why Joel and Tommy traveled all the way to Boston from Texas when there are like 50 major cities closer to them? This also ties into why there are so many time jumps in the series. There actually are so few humans left that they could travel for weeks or months without any incidents.
