Here's a video idea: Buy the stuff you need for a "starter" kitchen (think young person moving out first time) and cook a full week's worth of meals using only those tools (assuming that large white goods are part of the apartment). Do a survey among your viewers and find out which budgets people had when they first moved out and use that as a limit. If the stuff you buy end up being crap (very likely with a low budget), do some suggested upgrades at reasonable prices. Basically - figure out what it costs to set up a decent first kitchen.

Also tips of having a well stocked pantry. As someone who does live with 1 person, but typically only cooks for 1 it's difficult to not just buy convenience foods and I'm a chef. It feels silly to cook a great meal for 1 all the time.

Use your freezers, people. I usually cook family sized batches and freeze portions for later. Cook once, get 4-6 meals which you can eat at any point in the next few months. Healthy, home cooked tv-dinners, basically. My freezer is currently stocked with a few zip lock baggies each of beef stroganoff, chili con carne, pork stew, beef bourgignon, bean and bacon soup, stuffed peppers, and tuna casserole. I could eat home made dinners for a couple months without cooking once. Just add some fresh veg. You could do lasagne, bolognese, soups and pies... anything that's good reheated will be good frozen, thawed and then reheated. Save time, money, electricity, and get your food exactly as healthy or unhealthy as you like it, in portion sizes you choose. Between freezer meals and home made ferments and pickles, you can just not even bother with groceries for three weeks if you're busy, and still eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Heated lunchboxes are a gamechanger. Especially if you work in a non traditional environment that doesn't have a break room or microwave. I used the crock pot one for years. Just switched to luncheaze bc it doesn't need to be plugged in and can be set automatically to start heating. If you're working an event or convention far from plugs or on set- you just go to your bag and it's ready. Nothing is worse than cold lunches

Ok I might need to look into this. I’m a delivery driver and I don’t have time to go hunt out a place to eat in the middle of my route and I’m kinda tired of eating cold sandwiches every day. I’d thought about a lunchbox heater that plugs into a vehicle cigarette lighter outlet but a cordless one would be much better as several of our vans don’t have working outlets 😑

Something Ebbers said has resonated with me, it is true that so many of the sorted recipes are for 2. Like Ebbers I live alone and the fact that the recipes on the app are for 2 people is one of the reasons I stopped using it. The spice carousel isn’t a terrible idea, but I wouldn’t use it at all. I have an entire cupboard with 3 shelves RAMMED with herbs, spices and the like. I just use a spoon to measure out the stuff I need! Perhaps for someone with not as many herbs and spices as I have, it would be better.

I have to think it's made for people who only have the true basics (salt, pepper) and buy mixes. I don't even have a large collection of spices and I already have more than can fit in that carousel. two new ideas for challenges: 1. no energy/depression cooking (needs a better name!), get the participants to use as few elements/stages as possible AND as little clean up needed as possible (like dishes, trash etc) as little effort as possible but still not like, microwave meals you know! lite sure, use shortcuts, but you're not supposed to notice them in the final dish. cook like you have no energy to cook/depression. when I am in a depressive episode the thought of many different stages or elements in cooking or the cleaning up afterwards makes it almost impossible to start cooking. 2. Use as little electricity as possible! (don't really know how to measure this though, number of times or different points for low/medium/high...?)

Regarding the spice carousel... I have had a similar one for over 15 years and it does come In handy. I have a small kitchen, with limited cabinet space. Having this mounted under a cabinet right next to the stove keeps the spices in easy reach without taking up space in the cabinets. Several people commented about labels, the carousel I have came with a sheet of printed labels listing lots of different spices, so you could choose which 12 to apply to each container. If you are someone that has many jars of spices, you know the annoyance of having to dig through a cabinet full of jars to find the one you need, this product does help.

It was very Ron Popeil. We tried the non-electric bag sealer, the spiral cutter that would make carrot rosettes if it didn't shred your fingers in the cutlery drawer first, the spout that you shove into an orange to juice it (which actually did work), and I was very excited when I went to university because I was able to buy one of those knives that could cut a tin can and still smoothly cut a tomato (with complementary steak knives included!). On the subject of spice storage, if you have a lot I'd recommend using a full drawer with small clip jars. Depending on the brand they're just short enough to fit into a standard UK sized drawer. You can put round stickers on the top with the names, and arrange alphabetically. It's very quick to retrieve them, and what space you lose in a drawer you can make up from wherever else you were keeping them. YMMV.

I love that the Select a Spice is still around--it's reassuring to know if mine ever break I can replace them! I've used them for well over a decade. The majority of my spice cabinet contains three of them--two stacked on a tall shelf and one separate on a short one. I buy my spices in bulk (way cheaper!). Way easier to find the spice I want than having to root around lots of spice bottles that get knocked over. Nicely labeled, easy to read, the one I want can always be spun to the front. (Ben is right that most tablespoons don't fit. I did find one that does!)

My Friend, a Farmer, carries a Tractor Oven with her in the tractor. 12 volt, heats in about a hour and a half. She makes her own meals, stores in proper size and plops in the tray, then straight to the Oven... Nice!

That ice cream gadget is a win in my books. It's similar to using a freezer ice cream machine in terms of prep, just with a tray instead of a bowl. Will seriously consider getting one!

I've owned a similar lunch box. It's a lifesaver when taking your lunch to work. No more fighting for the only microwave for 30 people, hopping that it will be working when it gets to your turn. Just plug it in half an hour before your lunch break, eat it and rest for a while before getting back.

Am I the only person who now has 'We don't talk about Bruno' as an ear worm? 😆. I like Bruno. I could see myself using that a lot, so I think I'd pay a money. With the spins and clicks, that spice rack is a massive foodie fidget toy! 😁 I don't think I could be bothered to faff about with the 'Pan-n-Ice' thingy. 🙃

My issues with the lunch box- 1. It will have permanent food stains (especially tumeric) from first use 2. I don't want to heat food in a plastic container, I'm sure it will be fine for some time, but sooner or later it will breakdown into the food.

I recently redid my spice shelf (which was a hodgepodge of random containers before, some more airtight than others) and for the _briefest_ of moments considered that very KitchenArt unit. With how much I eyeball sprinkle spices, and how that thing _looks_ plasticky, I went with a nice set of square 4 fl. oz. (≈120mL) spice jars on a rack/two-level shelf instead, with lids labelled-much less fiddly, easy to do an eyeball sprinkle, looks super clean and fits nicely in a space-constrained kitchen.

So, I have the spice rack, and I love it. Actually I have two stacked and mounted under the cabinet next to my stove. I have one recipe I make frequently that happens to have 12 herbs and spices that go into it. So I have all of those in one, and then another 12 I use frequently in the other. Particularly with recipes I know by heart, it is super fast for me to grab a spice, crank out however many turns I need, put it back and grab the next. Not needing to grab measuring spoons and potentially having to clean them between spices is great and saves time too. It does have some drawbacks, and I wish the build quality was a little higher. But I say take it for a spin. 4 stars! 😁

Bruno Box: Garbage. you could buy a microwave for your office breakroom for that price. Spice Thingy: Garbage, use the containers they come in, as Ben said. Slicer: Garbage, just use a real food processor and not lose any fingers. Ice roller: Ok, not great. You can still do the same thing in a glass baking dish.

A spiral-whisk. Not the flat ones, the one that looks like a blender ball on a stick. I never see other people or chefs using them, but it's easier to clean because on most models, you can take the ball off. But you can also do a small amount of stiff peaked egg whites in about 90 seconds. I use them mine to make soufflé pancakes.

Y’all need to try the type of cheese grater that I grew up with! Is it simple? Yes. Is it the absolute easiest, worry free, stable hand grater you could hope for? Also yes. Search for “cheese grater with airtight storage container” and find the one with an oval plastic bottom and two grating lids of different sized… grates? It’s absolutely life changing!
