The problem is always their ability to resist the outside world and whats inside them and how much of "true plastic" they are. Being non-plastic doesnt mean universal biodegradibility, some need chemical compostations others need industrial heated compostation process and worst is if they somehow end up among regular plastics they seriously degrade the ability to recycle those.
@jpbaley20162 күн бұрын
For the olive oil, When you mention airline catering, being compostable is not a plus or minus since it going into a plastic bag into the landfill. At a restaurant it’s more hygienic as you don’t know how well anyone washed their hands, who have handled the cruets before you. Unfortunately, it can’t be used for vinegars as the seaweed ampule wouldn’t survive the acid.

@SortedFood edible plates etc are just a marketing gag at best and overall they are nothing but wasted resources. We had this stuff already in the 90s and presumably way earlier since it's not complicated to produce. But there are plenty of reasons why it never cought on. 1 price, its at least double of cartonage 2 no one wants to eat something that came in contact with the table no matter how clean the table is 3 it's pig food is an often heard argument when absolutely no one would feed this to their livestock because of contamination risks. 4 and if it ends up in the composter then cartonage will do just as fine if not better. Seriously this is just re inventing the wheel as a triangle. Food trucks have been serving their stuff in breads and even ceramic bowls for ages. So stick with the old tech engineer saying, never touch a running system.

1/3 of the can is (fancy) air. That takes money to ship, costs the bottler more, etc., and for what? A fancy experience that is probably better _with_ a cocktail shaker (at maybe 4x the price for a good one?): no plastic parts to break, and if you *do* want to take it somewhere, the space savings begins with the third drink. There are 8oz soda cans anyway, just use those for packaging, and maybe market a high-quality branded cocktail shaker.

A quick note on the Shaka Can: I don't know where you're getting that 4.25 quid (~ $5.41 for us across the pond) is a good price for canned cocktails. You may see that price where you live, but most canned cocktails around here are about half that (at or just above $2.50 or ~2 quid). I'd confirm whether that price is accurate or if you're paying extra for the novelty (and the inert gasses, since it's missing water).

London prices for premium products, I'd guess.
@avarcl36252 күн бұрын
So I think the difference is alcohol in the UK is taxed aggressively and is hit in two ways, you have your standard sales tax at 20% in the form of VAT which is determined based on the price of the product but you also have alcohol duty which is dependent on the type of drink and the alcohol content within so impacts all products equally ( in Scotland you then have the addition on minimum alcohol pricing but doesn't impact sorted as they are London based) for example the grape fruit cocktail is a spirit based drink at an abv of 20% and a volume of 110 ML the current duty on this is £28.50 per liter of pure alcohol that means. 0.11x0. 2x 28.50 = 0.63 (rounded up) in duty and then 20% Vat. To be sold at £2 the product would need to be priced at £1.6 removing the duty that means the company would need to be making a profit off of the remaining 0.97 . Is that possible and do places sell things like that yes, do the taste good and be considered a premium product which is what the sorted guys were comparing it against no. I tried to look at the USA equivalent (I assumed US apologise if you are Canadian) to see how taxation compared and knew I was going to have difficulty with state and federal differences going in but damn they really make it hard to find out how much tax you owe so gave up apologise if taxation broadly lines up in per gallon and sales tax in whatever area you are based. 😅 For premium canned cocktails though they are fair with the £4.25 and I would put that style could go up to £7 especially when they are marketed to those that are likley willing to pay £12-18 for a cocktail in a bar.
@nicolad88222 күн бұрын
Plenty of cheaper ones in the UK, maybe depends on the actual alcohol content and the quality. For example Tesco has a mojito by Served, a supposed premium brand under Ellie Goulding the singer’s name. 250ml can, 8% £2.75. With their loyalty card you can get 4 for the price of 3.

my one concern with the shakacan would be the inefficiency that seems like a lot of empty room which means more metal, which let's be honest a lot of won't be recycled even if it should be, and decreased transportation efficiency cause they are using more space per mill of liquid some of that will theoretically be offset by the inert gas helping to increase shelf life but we are still shipping empty shape for the convivence of not buying a shaker which aren't that expensive and if you want to bodge it you can get a protein shaker for the same price as the shakkacan shaker

If that olive oil pipette will decompose in 30 days, how does it not decompose in the box on the shelf?

One issue with the spoons and plates is for people who can't have gluten (celiacs for example). So for me, I love the idea, but I wouldn't be able to use them for fear of wrecking my health.

The sha ka can seems like a ploy to sell you half-full cans of alchohol. Like those coctail cans are full where as these are designed to drop ice inside lol. It just feels like breaking out the expensive wine glasses for the boxed wine... compostable items are great but its somewhat moot if its going to the landfills. It all just gets buried and locked away

The olive oil pipettes I could see buying for my take to work lunches. Salads, pasta, dip for bread, sandwiches, etc. No more tiny plastic or glass container to wash and hope the lid stays on until lunchtime.

The single serve oil pack needing scissors makes it pretty inconvenient. Neat idea if they can find a way to update the package so it's easier to open.

Edible plates can totally kick off, I mean we already sort of do that with ice cream cones/bowls. If it's not just novelty but also adds to the eating experience (like the added sweetness of the sugar cone, or the texture of the crunch complementing the softness of the ice cream), customers will be willing to pay a little more and therefore businesses will be incentivized to offer them as an option.

I'd of liked to see the extra shaking room be on the cap side rather than the can side for the canned cocktail, less resource use and shipping bulk if they were smaller.
@stacey47582 күн бұрын
The cans for the can shaker are horrible. The waste of space, causes bigger damage to the environment with transport space. They could have just made the topper a little bigger, so the ice is in the topper, not the can

So much more enjoyable without an audience. Feels more genuine and not played up. Different camera angle is a great idea too

Oof, the plate and spoon one is tough for me. I love that we're seeing better alternatives to single use plastic, but I don't love that I'm starting to see some of these alternatives being rolled out with no allergen warnings.

If nothing else, watching Barry just lose himself to the giggles made my night. Ben just watched them eat the plate for a little longer than necessary before telling them that it was, in fact, edible. 🤣

You guys should make a video of just cast iron gadgets. There's a bunch out there. You may need to give a few extra coats of seasoning to the pre seasoned stuff. That's why the food stuck on the cast iron skillet you guys looked at before. Here's just a few possible items you could cover: - Wonderffle cast iron stuffed waffle maker. - Lodge Pro Sportsman Grill. - Barebones All in One Skillet - Stargazer (modern, ergonomic cast iron cookware) - Presses, meat grinders, ice shavers and more.

Ill just put out there that a casual cocktail drinker can just get a regular shaker for 5 bucks without the need to buy half empty cans for 5 pounds to fit it.

Normally canned cocktails like that are sold in those smaller 250ml cans (kinda like red bull) and come pre-diluted. So it's pretty much the same amount of product after it's prepared.

I think the unpredictability of allergens with various different flours making up the edible spoons would be a no-go for me. Chickpea flour is definitely working its way into the mainstream, sometimes insidiously when it is not an advertised ingredient replacing things that are not normally containing it.

edible plates for street food would be awesome especially if they get sorts flavored with whatever is on it. then you don't gotta worry about finding a trash can or cleaning it out of your car etc. especially smaller bowls and such of food. that would be awesome. it's like a bread bowl but more sturdy.

Love all the ideas here but wondering in particular about the plates/spoons - would they be safe for someone with celiac to eat from (definitely not to eat...) or do they leech grain content into the food they hold?

The edible plates and cutlery are amazing. As an option. I have friends who have legume allergies and that plate could trigger a reaction. I think anyone using them should display a sign with the possible contents to keep their customers safe. Of course, I dream of all restaurants and streetfood vendors doing this (I have food allergies myself), but have hope for the future.

Thank you for this joyous video. So much giggling to be had as the drinks hit and then they started eating the cutlery. Ben not a peep out of you you were laughing so quietly when they were figuring out the plate/spoon. That was funny. maybe start with a food, then drink, then more food, then second drink. This one was fun, and totally silly

guys, edible plates have been around for a while! I can't count how many times I've eaten food off of edible plates/bowls at Christmas markets over the last decade

The edible spoon and plate are the only one that interested me. My mother often uses paper plates because she is tired a lot due to medical treatment, and this would be a much better solution than that, as far as sustainability goes.

Single use plastics were banned in my city a few years back, so it's great to see more alternatives to wooden utensils, which are what most places use now.

I love the idea behind the edable spoons and plates because we need more uses for waste but in this country street food is very much bread based as it is if the plate and cutlery also has gluten in there will be nothing I can eat safely as a celiac.
