You guys "misinterpreted" the screen with the red names in the beginning. Yes, all those units are indeed dead, but most of them have been dead a while. It's an overall overview of the squadron as a whole, not just for THAT specific deployment.

they are BAKA and misinterpret most of it, but at least their reactions are visceral. they don't get it's genocide for ALL 86. commenting to them is a waste of time, they don't respond to these.

“Fun” fact, Spearheaded is not the only execution squad, each front has it’s own. Sledgehammer in the north, Razor Edge in the south and Longbow in the west. Also, about the allocation of personel, the Republic waits until the squads are at half capacity or less and then reasignes the survivors to other squads.

Caleb: The Legion is probably farming the Spearhead Squadron, since all the best soldiers are sent there to die. Me: Mind = BLOWN. THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE. Holy crap. O.O

Yeah, I never even considered that before today. Obviously they have some idea where all of these 86 soldiers would be coming from, but they know that the brains they get from these areas are the highest quality, so why would they raze the area once when they could slowly cultivate an incredibly high quality of information for their soldiers? And knowing how amazing this author is, I'm 100% sure that she intended for that to be how it is, too. It's not accidental at all.

This is the episode that completely sold me on the show when I first watched it, after this I knew I was in for something truly special, all because one specific scene, the switching from fireworks to combat scene, has something that so many shows try to do but in most cases spectacularly fail while trying: tone-shifts done right. And I was right, because this has become my AOTY for 2021, my favorite LN after catching up to its latest release, and one of my favorite stories in this medium in general. And it only gets better and better as it goes on.

So the bros have the corrected translation subs courtesy of VidaWinter, but if you're using Crunchyroll subs, there is a translation error when Anju asks Kurena a question in the shower. It is translated as “What about you? Don’t you want to tell her?” Because of how Japanese sometimes drop subjects in sentences and relies on context to suggest the subject, this translation error is understandable. And in the context of the conversation, it still makes sense. However, the actual translation should be “What about you? Don’t you want to tell him?” While Kurena begins the conversation suggesting that perhaps they should inform Lena about the purpose of Spearhead, the topic shifts towards the people they love. Anju talks about Daiya and how things have changed, how she has changed since his death. So when she prompts the question, Anju is asking if Kurena wants to confess her feelings to Shin. And in turn, her response, “No. I don’t think I have the right,” while water trickles down her face like tears, makes much more sense. She realizes Shin is already carrying so much. The lives and memories of all his former squadmates. And eventually, he’ll be carrying memories of her. She doesn’t want to burden him with the weight of her feelings as well. This decision characterizes her as someone who truly cares for and is observant of Shin. It’s through her eyes that we learn the meaning behind his request for Lena to remember them. Kurena is able to see a part of Shin that Shin himself might not be fully aware of. The part of him that’s afraid of being left behind. Because if he fulfills his role as the Reaper, he will always be alone. Forced to carry his burden alone. Until the moment he meets his end. But now, with Lena’s promise, he finally has someone to remember him when he dies. Someone to take up his mantle. Someone to carry him and his friends forward.

I don't think the 86 could go anywhere else. The Legion has completely enclosed them (as seen on a map in the first couple of episodes, I forget exactly which one), so trying to run would mean going through Legion territory.

Hello and Moin Moin ;) Very nice and accurate reaction and discussion again. Really enjoyed watching it. To the huge artillery you predicted: It's first real strike is only 4 episodes away. Later in Part 2 ( ep12 to 23 ) it will get a name and there is a reference to a german WW1 artillery. To Anju's back: You saw those scars and have the right idea about them, but did you discover what was carved into her back ? Would be nice to know you ideas. ;) To Raid Device: Yes there is a thing implanted, nut not into the brain. It's in the neck, sadly its not shown anywhere. But I suggest it's almost same size like on Lena's necklace. CYA

We're all going to die someday, and we'll be dead forever. Our names will fade, our lives be absorbed into human history with most of us barely making a blip. I still remember a time in my life where the simple knowledge of those two facts was enough to cripple me; years spent trying desperately to find the meaning in just living another day with no clear answer. Well... that was 8 or so years ago now; after weighing my options, I decided to keep walking a little longer. Since then I've met new friends, learned new things and I'm proud of the person I've become, but those two facts still haunt me from time to time. That being said... that one line from Eighty Six really encapsulates the solution to our existential problem of mortality: even if you know you're destined for the gallows, its your choice how you walk up there. Maybe that choice is without meaning when you're gone, but I personally believe in those I've connected with and the contributions I've made to others lives, and the value they've added to mine. I take pride in that, and I'm proud of them. "What other reason do we need besides pride?" There may be no value in the future or your past, but I believe in the value of the present; decisions you make every day that can enrich the world around you and in doing so, your own life. As for the past, I'll never forget it. The people I've lost, the burdens I carried and the people who helped me lift them. No matter what happens to them, I'll carry them as far as I can and make them proud. Because I know they'll do the same for me. As for Eighty Six, this show really hit on exactly those feelings. I don't get this philosophical day to day, but when anxiety attacks and I feel I can't go on, these messages keep me walking forward. Don't undervalue your life, or that of those around you; there is a reason to keep moving forward.

95% of the discussion was centered around the mechanical nature of the Spearhead squadron and if it actually made sense for it to exist as it does, and the remaining 5% was them talking about the heart of what Raiden said- what they believe in and why they fight or the big revelations we learned about the squad- such as Shin and Raiden being raised by Alba, Anju being 'branded' by the 86 and Kurena knowing "the worst of the alba" (they didn't even mention this one). Not saying I wished the ratios were flipped- I like examining the nature of stories and how they work too- but they literally spent over 90% of the discussion on what was essentially one topic and it was arguably the less interesting one! Also, their discussion felt less like a good-faith exploration of concepts and more like "Let me see if I can spot an inconsistency".
