Shins parents both died. Then the brother, Shourei, got requisitioned. The man who saved Shin was the Alba priest that didn’t give up his land to the Government. Raiden mentioned him at the end of last episode.

Shin's father was the 1st to volunteer to go to battle to try to win freedom for his family, as they were told service would do. After he was killed they were told his service would only get freedom for 1 family member, so, his mother volunteered. Rei thought that if he was an only child his mother would not have had to go fight. That was what he viewed as Shin's sin. Being born was Shin's sin. Of course it wouldn't have mattered. It was all a lie by the Republic, and everyone was going to be sent to war.

The man who threw Rei off of Shin was the priest mentioned in the previous episode. Last episode they talked about an Alba priest taking care of Shin in the camps.

God damn. Despite this episode being basically all setup, the through-line question of what people do in confronted with their own helplessness and powerlessness is beautiful. Lena, having been confronted with the reality that she doesn't have the power to save Spearhead, tries to find answers. First, she goes to Annette, who had accepted her powerlessness and surrendered to the despair. There was nothing she could do to help. Then it was Karstahl, who, representing the ugly true nature of the Republic, uses his weakness as justification. There was no way to protect the Republic and the 86, so using them was the only way forward. Yet, he's now wallowing in self loathing. And then you have Shin and the 86, who accepted the truth and used it to create their own path forward. They aren't going off to die by orders of their oppressors. They're fulfilling their mission of protecting their loved ones and comrades. Setting off and finding their freedom from the Republic. And then to cap it all off, we have Rei, who broke under the despair and turned to violence, using Shin as an outlet for his tumultuous emotions. It's quite interesting how he mirrors Annette earlier in the episode. Annette being bullied for being friends with Shin, pushes the responsibility and fault of her problems onto him. And both, having done so, become afraid of the cruelty they are capable of.

All the details around Anette's story are just so incredible. Remember all her suitors? All the wrong age for her (and the men her age she says are 'too childish' or something along those lines) and her colleagues put up the photo wall to mock her. It seems the bullying from her peers never really stopped, and the only people willing to risk social status dating her are too young to know or old and desperate. She is so well characterized and serves such an important role in the series' thesis. An excellent portrait in how a populace can be conditioned to commit a genocide.

I'll never forget the cold rush that went through me upon seeing Shin's brother's distorted face; really gave me "I have no mouth and I must scream vibes." Hearing him talk about his human body as frail and glorify in his pursuit of Shin is really horrific and gives the Legion so much more depth as an antagonistic force: absolutely terrifying.

I think that because the shepherds are still mostly the person they used to be since they're made with intact brains, the legion almost had to twist their personalities and desires in a way that with make the shepherds still serve the legion. Because we also see this kind of thing happen with another shepherd later on (if ya know, ya know).

@@peggedyourdad9560 Not really. I would say that Shepherds aren't humans twisted into being Legion but the opposite, Legion twisted into the last desires and/or regrets of the humans. One difference between Rei and some other Shepherd we see is how fragmented Rei is most likely because of his conflicted emotions. He wants to protect Shin but he also feels great regret and inward hate because of what he did. The other Shepherd is way more focused and even able to think clearly, relatively speaking. Maybe The LN explains it more later but this is what I got from 23 eps.

@@peggedyourdad9560 But I didn't say that. The opposite actually. They don't do anything to the brains; the last desires of the humans twist the Legion instead. We see at least two Shepherds taking actions that can harm the Legion. Ah what the hell I will post it anyway since the bros don't read comments. Rei helps Shin and co to survive and Kiri ignores orders for a personal vendetta. Both actions don't benefit the Legion and in Kiri's case he even needs a special protocol to be activated to *reluctantly* stop attacking.

Both of Shins parents are from Giad they're not mixed Alba like Anju. The one taking care of them after the parents died was an Alba priest mentioned in the previous Episode.

Rei really drew the short straw when becoming a legion when I think about it 🤔: Got stuck in an otherwise mass produced model Has no cool call sign (that we know of) Despite being a Shepard, still fighting on front line RIP that poor soul

Pretty sure rei would just go by his old call sign dullahan, we just never hear it because he never contacts the wide are network. Aslo it seems that most shepherds use the dinosauria as their command vehicle. I can definitely think of some shepherds that drew shorter straws.

I know where my cellphone comes from and why I can have cheap clothes, but I haven't stopped buying them. The reason the 86 doesn't just want to become part of the legion is also because of "hope". Becoming part of the legion is the ultimate betrayal to the 86's core principle, the "hope" to live on and die as "humans". Glory to the fvcking Spearhead Squadron! 🤘

Man, it's a weird kind of dissonance to watch these back to back. Caleb last episode: "We know there's a priest who took care of Shin, so that's interesting. Excited to know more about that". Caleb this episode: "Bro, it MUST be his dad. Who else can it be? NOPE, could still be the dad. It's the dad bro." Hahaha... I know missing things is part of the experience when watching shows. It's what makes re-watches so much fun! But when the premises of your channel is we go really in-depth then you should probably do a bit more review. If I had a penny for every time Caleb or Jacob were *confidently* wrong... Well, I'd have about a dollar by now which is certainly impressive in a way.
