Also in regard to Rider, while Shinji has control, he supplies the mana, so the reason Rider sucks at first is because he can’t give her enough to max out her strength like Sakura can (which is also why, early on he has her attacking people and drinking blood)

Illya knew because she is the original grail. The grail system is a copy of the Counter Force, where the planet itself (and the will of humanity as a whole), will summon great heroes from history, in an event that could lead to extinction of humanity. And the Counter Force uses Heaven's Feel (the third true magic, materialization of the soul) to summon these servants. A magus, who had once reached the root of Akasha (basically the root of all existence), gained the power to use Heaven's Feel, but passed away. So, the Einzbern family tried to create a copy of her as a homunculus. They were able to get their hands on an imperfect version of Heaven's Feel, and used it to create the holy grail system, a system they hoped to use to reach the root of Akasha themselves, to get access to true magic of their own. So Illya, as an Einzbern, and the lesser grail, would know if Zouken stole it, and implanted it in Sakura. Unfortunately, as seen in Zero, the grail is corrupt. So, there is no reason Rin should know about it the same way Illya does. Sakura becoming the vessel for the grail? The grail being corrupt? She might figure it out, but she didn't know beforehand.

About the difference between this Shirou and UBW Shirou, on here he was forced into the choice of killing Sakura, or letting her live at the cost of who knows how many lives. That decision made him realize that for him, Sakura is more important that being a hero, he decided that he would allow innocents to die if it was to save her. This was on one hand, Shirou deciding to save Sakura, but on the other, Shirou deciding NOT to save the people she might kill. UBW Shirou would actually be fucked in this situation, since he wouldn't kill Sakura, but also wouldn't accept the death of others, and he'd end up regretting the result regardless of what happens. In fact, that's probably not very far from what happened to Archer that made him turn into what he is, which is exactly why Archer was so dead set in killing Shirou in UBW, but not in Heaven's Feel.

It would depend on which part of UBW we are talking about. Anything prior to his fight with Archer would probably just come to the same realization as HF Shirou. Post Archer fight, he might mercy kill her.

Fun fact about that whole scene where Shirou looks like he's going to kill Sakura: In the VN you can do that. You choose not to save Sakura and you get the Mind of Steel ending, or as it is also known, the 'Superhero' ending. Shirou hardens his heart and becomes a monster of logic far worse than Kiritsugu or Archer ever were, becoming a 'Superhero.' It's one of the few bad ends in the vn that I believe explicitly states Shirou survives the grail war after, and once the bad end is complete you have Taiga and Illya just look at you all disappointed like 'You know that wasn't the right call. Go back and do it properly this time.'

Did that ending unironically when I played. Then Saw the Tiger dojo and was like "What the hell? Why are you looking at me like that, I was right!" Honestly, it's more a mercy killing than anything else. (Especially considering that the shadow kills a lot of people that could be saved by sacrificing Sakura) I mean, I know why that ending is wrong but I can't fully bring myself to look at it as such. I dunno, being a logical person just makes sense

That ending is for the choice you have to kill her in the Church, not when she is at Shiro's house. There you only get a bad ending where Rider kills you, if you decide to kill her.

So, I believe the flashes to the Shirou with white hair is showing the Mind of Steel ending of the Heaven's Feel route, where he truly values his ideals above everything else even his deeply personal human attachments and becomes mentally like an inhuman machine in pursuit of his ideals. It's interesting to note also, that Sakura actually wouldn't mind if Shirou killed her, she would actually welcome it.

@@ShinJack_ At the point when Shiro kills Sakura, Rider was not there. The ending references the choice he would have made had he decided to kill her in the Church. And he would not have stopped with Sakura, he would have killed Rin and all the other masters too.

It's the ending where he becomes Kiritsugu, except worse, because Kiritsugu still clung onto at least SOME of his humanity. If he didn't, Angry Matthew never would have managed to break him. It's like a natural birth of EMIYA Alter, except again, arguably worse than the Emiya Alter we actually have, because even he still retains some of his humanity. Mind of Steel is, arguably, the worst of the bad ends for Shirou thematically because the entirety of Fate Stay Night is essentially beating Shirou over the head with the idea that Kiritsugu went about achieving his Ideals the wrong way, and in order to truly achieve his ideals he must find his own path to it instead of just becoming a killing machine like Kiritsugu. Mind of Steel Shirou doesn't do that, however. He embraces Kiritsugu's way of doing things, and even surpasses Kiritsugu's ability as a killing machine by throwing away his humanity entirely. Something technically only Shirou would be capable of due to his broken and distorted nature as a person he obtained from the Fuyuki Fire. Even the Taiga Dojo segment is offput by this ending, where as in every other bad end to my knowledge they try to keep it relatively high energy and mostly positive. A sort of "don't let it get to ya, you'll get em next time, slugger" type thing. With Mind of Steel it's more of just like a "... Okay yeah, that's a choice... But ya still fucked up big time, and there's nothing else to say about that." Still though, probably one of the most interesting bad endings, and a part of me still hopes one day we get a Mind of Steel EMIYA in FGO.

Visual novel fun facts 1. In the visual novel, Sakura and Rin's relationship is a bit more antagonistic, mostly due to Zouken's plotting, having implanted seeds of jealousy into her by making occasional remarks of how inferior Sakura is to Rin. Sakura and Rin would argue almost frequently after she and Ilya started staying at Shirou's place. They do still have their sister bonding moment, mostly after Shirou tries his best to get them to get along. But it only lasts briefly before they start arguing over Shirou again. 2. The dream sequence Sakura has is an entirely movie only scene. In the visual novels, Sakura sees firsthand the atrocities she commits as the shadow while she's sleepwalking around the city. And the circumstances behind them are usually mega dark. One scene was basically a group of guys trying to force themselves onto her before the shadow comes in to take them out. She usually comes to after the fact, horrified that she's always covered in blood. 3. Sakura is able to see everything through Rider's eyes. So with that context, think about every scene with Rider and now that Sakura knows exactly what's happening at that point in time. 4. It isn't stated explicitly, but Rider begins to have feelings for Shirou while they're living under the same roof. But doesn't act on them out of respect for Sakura... Aside from that one time she entered his dreams and 'succed' the mana out of him.

The dream sequence isn't exactly original, it was just expanded a lot. The VN did have that in the narration, it just had no images and was directly contrasted with what was happening in reality, while the movie animated it all and only showed reality afterwards.

It seems to me like they might have misinterpreted Shirou's development as a character in this movie just a bit. They talked about Shirou continuing to pursue his stubborn ideals, but I think Shirou's whole character arc in this movie very clearly revolved around NOT adhering to his ideals. The whole "will you betray" dream sequence was very clearly asking whether he would betray his ideal, that being the path to becoming a hero. The situation should be very obvious to Shirou that everyone cannot be saved seeing as how many people have already died following Sakura's outburst after devouring Gilgamesh. The path to Shirou's ideal and saving as many people as possible as a hero would require him to kill Sakura before she devours even more people. However, Shirou's decision not to kill Sakura and to betray (his ideal) even at the cost of more sacrifices runs directly counter to some of his alternate route selves. He has decided to become a hero for those whom he most cares for as opposed to the many, and as such has already made a much more selfish/human choice than the Shirou of the alternate routes. I believe that Sakura decides to leave not just because she is causing pain for Shirou, but because she sees herself as tainting him and destroying his ideal in the process. This is also likely the reason why Archer abandoned his desire to kill Shirou in this route. Shirou has already well and truly diverged from the path of the hero that would lead to him becoming archer. I think the boys picked up on some of this stuff, but it didn't seem like they fully connected everything back to Shirou's betrayal of his ideal.

That was the complete opposite intention for Christ sake how do people keep getting this wrong? “How can you betray everything you’ve ever believed in to protect a single person? I don’t know which path emiya shirou will take, but if you betray what you’ve believed in till now, that sin will consume you” Archer was practically horrified at what shirou was doing and the movie’s failure to convey this does a massive disservice to the complexities of his character and turns him into a caricature that hates shirou and his “dumb” ideal. It also ruins large parts of shirou’s character development because these words are the ones that haunt his decision to protect Sakura for the rest of the route and why he believes the pain of archers arm is something he deserves.

It's crazy seeing the Kischur Zelretch name just being thrown out there in one line and being called "a magician", if it wasn't for someone with extensive nasuverse knowledge explaining it to me on the third movie, I guess I'd never know. But that just makes me appreciate the completude of heaven's feel even more. This world is way bigger than just the Holy Grail war, it has a really complex history and a bunch of incredible stories. Yep, and that's how I fell on a rabbit hole even deeper than the Fate series. Honestly, watching with people that have knowledge about stuff makes the experience even better (if the person is reasonable and knows how to explain stuff to a fate/staynight-only person, of course) and specially if it's something you know a lot already, like, I know a lot about fate, but not all about this world, so, in this situation, having it explained to you is really awesome. Man, the wonderland-esque dream sequence is breathtaking and so, so creepy. I love the bizarre rhyme and all the cute plushies (representing the servants that were devoured) being washed away by the river. It's very chilling to think of what /exactly/ is going on in real life at that moment too: that there's a dazed, barefoot woman in a back alley surrounded by four people who are sort of taunting her. Ooof. Then she explodes one of them, the rest run away... and then she eats them lmao. Never left my mind since I first saw it.

So fun fact, the tradition in mage families in the Fateverse is to pass the family magecraft and magic crest to only one child. It's what Tokiomi had planned to do all along, so Rin was always the Tohsaka heir. However, when Rin was young she was sick and there was a concern she might not live through, so Tokiomi had Sakura in case Rin died. The problem came when Rin survived but only one of them could inherit the Tohsaka magecraft. So Tokiomi gave Sakura to the Matou's for 2 reasons, one because Sakura like Rin was born with immense innate magical talent and he felt that would be a waste, but actually another reason is because her magical talent would only attract trouble if she wasn't under the protection of a magical family and learned magecraft. Problem is, Tokiomi is terrible when it comes to judging people, seen with his trust of Kirei first off, but also because he entrusted Sakura to the horror that is the Matou's. But another thing to note is that while Tokiomi had no idea how Sakura was treated in the Matou household, the only thing about her treatment that he would have cared about was that she wasn't actually learning proper magecraft.

The progression of Shirou's character conflict throughout the three timelines is great. In the Fate route, he sticks to his ideals and is ultimately rewarded for it with no repercussions. In the UBW route, he is confronted with the dark side of his ideals, but despite acknowledging his flaws, he decides to stick to them anways and fights to keep his ideals intact. Finally, we see Shirou, for the first time, forced to choose between the few and the many. A situation where he can't save everyone, he can't even try to. And at last, he betrays his ideals, choosing the one he loves over all else. He may still be a hero, but the pure ideals that once guided his actions aren’t so pure anymore.

He believed that no matter how hard the path he been through, someday he will be rewarded after all of this.

And ultimately the scene in the church with kirei where he is forced by kirei to realize his own limitations. He is given a choice to save the world(kirei presenting him with the grail to undue the fire) or live with it's flaws and his inherent limits as a human and he chooses the latter. It's what saves Arturia as well.

As a fan of the VN there are a couple scenes which I do miss but understand why they were cut for time. The whole part in the church with Kirei intentionally inflaming the situation and Sakura fleeing because of everything being said As well as all the Illya scenes, this is the Sakura route but it is also where we get the bulk of her development, which comes back to some things in movie 3. I also really did like how they portrayed Archers feelings towards Illya, you can see just how much he cares for her. Both he and Shirou went straight to save her and he treats her so gently. And given Illyas lifespan, I'm sure he had to deal with that alongside her in his past.

Yeah, that seen cleared it up. With her telling Shiro that she wasn't a virgin, that her first time was long ago, and then the scene with Shinji saying how dirty she is in bed, it adds up to many years of him assaulting her. Also, the worms messing with her pleasure sensation, she was unable to deny Shinji when he forced himself.on her, as she is hyper sensitive. All of this is my figuring, seeing what I saw, and reading comments from real Fate fans.

@@5ilver42 Angra certainly shouldn't count since he was absorbed in the third war, it's been decades. He was a super weak servant anyway so his soul was probably weak too. Gil was worth like 2-3 regular servants so the Grail is ready at this point. Remember that you typically need 5-6 regular servants to make a wish, and 7 to access Heaven's Feel.

She thinks there's something wrong with her, and him choosing her messes with her mental state and it fractures how we see it this movie. Some of this may be wrong, but generally I think this is right.

I'd say that Heaven's Feel is definitely above Fate/Zero for me, it's by far my favorite of the 3 routes. That said, it is not my favorite Fate, solely because Fate/Hollow Ataraxia exists, and it's REALLY good. It's very unlikely for Hollow Ataraxia to ever get an anime adaptation though, the way the game is structure makes it near impossible to adapt to a linear anime format, so I do recommend you guys consider a playthrough of it in the future.

One thing to note, is that the movies do present a lot of stuff using its forte, the visuals, instead of explicit writing. I've seeing a lot of VN readers complaining about some stuff that isn't told like the novel, but A LOT of it is there, just represented visually (specially some parts people complain about). It's a whole different type of media. Obviously tho, a LOT of people that didn't read the VN isn't gonna get those visual queues and details, but it is there. IMO, a somewhat close example is Re:zero, novel to anime, SPOILERS from the first couple episodes below: In case you watched, u can read. There's a paragraph in the LN introducing Elsa as a character, and the author makes sure to draw our attention to the detail of Elsa's hair color being black, like Subaru's. And it emphasizes, that since Subaru came to this world he hadn't seen anyone with black hair color. Now, how does the anime does it? This is a description, not Subaru's thoughts on the novel. So the direction pans the camera to Elsa, and cuts to subaru's hair, and hers. 3 or 4 times. But that isn't told explicitly, but visually. I didn't even know this before reading the LN. But it's there, right on my face, all this time. And I honestly prefer and love that. Like, how are you gonna translate a book, like LOTR for example, and the excellency that is the trilogy without adapting some parts? With all due respect, some parts of the book were rough to get through for me. And here I am ranting again into the void....

You have a point, but when it comes to F/SN specifically there is so much nuance and lore that is simply not possible to show through visuals, at least not with the way Ufotable does things. Not to mention just how much build up and context is entirely non-existent due to cutting out like 60% of the route. So even if they do manage to convey certain ideas accurately, that doesn't mean that they're explored as effectively as they were in the VN.

my only source of knowledge is the animated shows and these movies, so this is purely speculation, but it seemed to me that Sakura was never TRAINED on how to use her magic and was merely groomed to be a massive spring of mana that could be leached off of, while Shinji, who is incompetent was trained in magic use, but had no mana to use that was his own. So, the Matou training and development was along the thought of separating the "brains" from the "brawn" if you will. The flaws in this obviously was that the "brain" in this deal was of extremely poor quality, and Zouken still had his own secret plans to just oversee and do everything himself, since his plan was to take the Grail for himself anyway. All of this is merely to say that almost all of Sakura's magical abilities are entirely subconscious, and why she has such wild and uncontrolled application of it.

Shinji was never trained in magecraft. He studied by himself before he realised he was never going to be the Matou heir, but nobody ever trained him. Shinji was never considered the "brains" in any way; Zouken couldn't care less about him and he acted as Rider's Master because of his peer pressure on Sakura plus her not wanting to participate in the War. Zouken's original plan outside of HF was to skip the 5th War and use Sakura's child to fight in the 6th War.

VN reader here. You're mostly right, as her magecraft "education" wasn't designed to give her combat skills like Rin's was. Zouken's aim was mostly to have her already enormous potential be enhanced by the Crest Worms so that Zouken could eventually possess her body. While she was taught the Matou magecraft, her body isn't suited for it, instead being naturally more inclined to something like what the Tohsakas use. That weakness completely goes out the window when she merges with the Shadow of Angra Mainyu and effectively has the mana supply of the Holy Grail supporting her true magic affinity. Zouken never really had high expectations for the 5th HGW, which is why he is only actually present in one of the three routes. Instead he has his sights set on the following war and allows Shinji and Sakura to take the lead in this one. Sakura goes along with Shinji's (bad) plan to loan Rider to him and let him be the Master out of courtesy to her brother and so that she wouldn't have to participate in the war herself. (This may also be why Rider never returns in UBW after being defeated by Kuzuki. Shinji decides he needs a stronger servant, and Sakura has no issues with not participating in the rest of the war, though this is somewhat speculative on my part.)

@@drasilisk2895 Re: skipping the 5th war, was this really the plan, or was it that Zouken didn't expect the 5th war to happen so soon? Usually the wars occur in 50-60 year intervals, and the series makes it a point that the 5th war happened really early. It caught basically everyone, including Zouken, off guard. On a normal timescale, he probably could've used Sakura, but she'd have been a fully fledged, fully mature magus in her late 50s to 60s. Which probably would have made winning the war easier. Imagine a fully empowered Sakura with a proper lifetime of magic training/torture - she'd have either been dead before that point, or totally unstoppable.

@@overchipz Maybe. I don't remember the vn being super clear on where the line is for fatal damage when it comes to Rider, though it's been a while since I've read it. You're definitely led to believe that she dies at the beginning of the HF route when she fights saber. I always interpreted it as Rider no longer being needed in UBW since Shinji abandons her for Gilgamesh, but you may be right. Hard to say if Sakura could have brought her back or not. Now in the Fate route she 100% dies somewhat early on.

I think that to this day, I have not seen better fights than salter vs berserker and salter vs rider, not even demon slayer has given me that excitement and quality.( personal opinio) fate is on another level .. definitely sakura's route is my favorite, because of those problems in which shirou is confronted with his ideals as a justice hero

Saber wasn't using Excalibur throught most of the fight, that was her Mana Burst skill she was using to kill Berserker over and over. It was only in the last blast that she used Excalibur and you see the huge difference in scale.

We see the lie! edit: I've watched a few reactions now where people react to Rin's "a human body won't be able to handle the influx of mana" with "it's fine because we know they're the same guy" when the problem is the unnatural amount of power introduced to Shirou's feeble human body lmao edit 2: Sakura "stamina powering" through to the deadline means she'll have to keep replenishing her reserves, which is what Zouken is counting on Shirou to have to want to stop by killing one for the sake of the many.

@@vicount3944 Care to explain? My full interpretation is something like this - In UBW, Shirou's thing is that he's gonna save everyone. Naturally, this wouldn't work, and eventually he even agrees that he'd end up following in Archer/Kiritsugu's steps, trading the few for the many, except he wouldn't regret it. That is a massive contrast with this Shirou, who can't bring himself to kill Sakura, effectively trading the many for one special person. It's the complete opposite. I guess you could argue that this Shirou is still in the "save everyone" mentality, not wanting to sacrifice Sakura, but that's not how I saw it, especially considering how Archer reacts to the events and warns Shirou not to stray from this path.

@@AnniNikaido Alright the other people are being way to aggressive about it but you have indeed missed the point a bit. To clarify and go a bit too deep into shirou’s actual character, he’s not actually all that interested in actually saving people, more so that he’s obsessed with protecting the concept of his ideal. He himself is already aware that’s its impossible nonsense in the prologue but has to continue because his ideal is the thing that’s kept him alive up until now. If he abandons it without replacing it with something of equal weight then he’ll simply switch off like a puppet with his strings cut (one of the bad ends in the VN shows this). Shirou runs into Hercules sword not to save saber, but to save himself, if that makes any sense? To loop this around back to ubw shirou, archer is essentially the endpoint of this concept. He saved others to protect himself, hoping that one day nobody would cry in front of him again and he’d finally be safe, that since everyone was finally happy, he could be too. UBW shirou manages to (through Illya’s death and talk with Rin before) gain some appreciation and value for actual human life outside of just viewing people as things to be saved and comes to the conclusion that there’s still something to be proud of in just saving people even if he will never actually succeed in his ideal. All 3 routes are about shirou navigating his mental illness and finding a loophole to achieve happiness and self actualisation. Shirou doesn’t follow archer’s footsteps, he surpassed him.

It's always funny to see Gil get punked, because realistically speaking it's impossible. The man literally has access to every Noble Phantasm you could ever want, on top of THE most powerful Clairvoyance ability in the franchise, and it may even be the most powerful Clairvoyance style ability in all of fiction PERIOD. The man, realistically speaking, CANNOT BE PUNKED. The only reason he ever loses is, more or less, because of PLOT. The Plot conspires against him, and that's the only reason he loses! That, or his own arrogance, which I would argue also counts as The Plot fucking him over. That's why watching him get punked is so funny. @@datzfatz2368 that exactly what happened. Illya used incomplete Heavens Feel to save Shirou`s soul (inside a pendant if I`m not mistaken), which was found by Rider after the battle. After that Rin and Sakura spend ton of time and money to find puppet master, who takes one of main roles in Garden of Sinners (redhead lady, Aozaki Touko), and she made new body, where Shirou`s soul was put to basically reincarnate him.

Honestly the way Berserkers noble phantasm is handled is one of my least favorite aspects of F/SN. In theory he has to be killed nine times in nine different ways, but some attacks erase several lives at once (Excalibur, Caliburn) and you can actually use the same method several times like Excalibur, only with mana burst the second time. It's a awesome, original concept, but it plays out like a healing factor that runs out after a while.
