Okay, spoiler comment from someone who has watched the whole series: I got so emotional rewatching this episode. Like knowing everything that happens before this episode hurts so much. Like the bet, which was likely made not long before Kyo busts into the house, he is wearing the same outfit from that scene as the bet one. I was honestly so sad when Tohru thinks that Kyo hates her, oh honey no he doesn't hate you at all. Knowing that Kyo recognizes Tohru as well, hurts even more. Plus all the subtle foreshadowing with the hat, the bracelet (in other words his true form), and even Kyo's confinement (when he talks about not being able to live with other people). Maybe even a little Kureno foreshadowing with the bird resting on Akito's finger, which makes sense considering his circumstance surrounding Akito. (As you can tell I am a massive Kyo lover, sue me.) Oh, how we wish Kyo beating Yuki was arbitrary, oh how we wish. Like, I am going to cry so much rewatching this series, and our boys will be none the wiser.

They butchered it tho, by making Kyo "forget" about Kyoko. It makes his regret somehow lesser, to say he 'buried' the memories of falling out with her and her accident owhatever. Like, no, he remembers it, he knows Toru, he is conflicted about it every step of the way. Also, Kyo beating Yuki was arbitrary. That's just something Akito made up. Even if Kyo could do it, Akito can't really make him a part of the Zodiac. That was already decided long ago, by the original God and Cat.

@@AllTheArtsy Yes, to Akito the bet is arbitrary. But for Kyo he feels like it's the last bit of hope he has of not being locked up, even if it wasn't 100% genuine he has to try. I suppose I didn't word myself correctly in my initial post, I meant that he most definitely recognized Tohru. Also to Kyo's memories I never said he didn't remember, season one we already get hints to it he says sorry to Tohru after they visit the graves. He likely repressed a lot of the initial emotions surrounding that time and redirected it to beating Yuki. His feelings of guilt likely get stronger the closer he gets to Tohru throughout the series. Repression can do a lot to a person's mind. I think that makes sense for Kyo, because his stress response is to run. And Repression could be seen as a form of running away from a problem.

I am so happy that you love Kyo already because he's my 2nd favorite character after Tohru. I love this opening so much and the best part of the openings/endings/music in the show is how much emotion is put into the music. Also some of these theories/predictions/hopes and analysis in this reaction was just… :-) Finally I couldn't stop smiling throughout the entire reaction it was so enjoyable and was also heartwarming. You have no idea how dark and screwed up this series is. I cannot wait for your future reactions. I was young when I got hooked on Fruits Basket and as an adult, it still kept me interested.
