This has been pointed out many times, but I just love the beautiful yet sad irony that Kong sings a karaoke song about being alone on Christmas eve, even though he's the *only* character in the entire cast that wasn't alone that night. GOD I JUST LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH!!!

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. I always tear up at the whole reunion of Kong with his mom, and SO MANY characters show up here giving us perspectives into their lives and struggles. Absolutely amazing. This anime is a masterpiece.

My favorite episode! Christmas scene's contrast, Akuma and Peco...especially Akuma's line "I saved an idiot who drowning in the shallow end. You didn't even make it out to sea". This double meaning line is so good.

There is also incredible character development in the first 500 episodes of One Piece, I wouldn't compare them, they are so different. Why "put a number on it"? This 11 episode show is all about character development and it is incredibly competent at doing that. It's just that I feel weird about comparing it to a different anime that is not even primarily about character development and simply saying it's better. I certainly agree that this show is really special in what it achieves in terms of character development, I just don't like such blanket statements such as "a 500 episode shounen anime does not have character development this good". It's certainly not this "slick" and compact (happening within 11 episodes) but there are really good character moments and development arcs primarily (in my opinion) in One Piece, especially in the first 300 episodes.

This is an example of how great writing and directing can handle lots of exposition and development for characters in just a few minutes. There is no need to sit at a table or stand around and talk non-stop for 15 minutes, I'm talking to you SAO!

That Christmas scene with Kong is by far my favorite scene in the show. Glad you are getting so much out of this - it's an incredible anime. Here's hoping you'll continue with Yuasa when you're done with this. Devilman Crybaby would be an amazing choice, but I'm really hoping you pick up Tatami Galaxy.

Temporally I just want to point out that if you knew Japanese you'd notice that Peco's name, Yutaka Hoshino, actually has a word that means "star", and that Smile's name, Makoto Tsukimoto, actually has a word that means "moon". I think it's very important information.

7:45 I'm not sure but I've heard a lot that in anime or manga, they would use "eating chocolate" or "drinking juice" to represent "smoking" and "drinking" since they have some strange TV rules in Japan. This makes me wonder if Peco is actually drinking, and maybe, since it's not allowed, they change it to eating chocolate. Drinking makes more sense to me.
