Just wanted to note, in Japanese culture, saying Itterasshai ("Come back safely") should always be responded to with Ittekimasu ("I will return safely"). Subaru not saying that to his mother is insanely rude. And the fact that he didn't say it (understandable, considering his depression), and then vanished is incredibly sad. Not only because he can never say it again to his loving parents, but his parents may think he committed suicide since he straight up didn't say he'd come back. The sadder thing is the author says that they didn't give up on him and search for Subaru every day... just thinking about it makes me full on ugly cry.

Yes, Subaru's parents are amazing, but it is heartbreaking that they don't get any closure on their son like Subaru just had. Here's the author's comments on this episode: Q: Now that their eldest son Subaru has been summoned to another world, what’s the situation in the Natsuki household? They seem like a couple that it wouldn’t be too surprising if they chased after him to the other world. A: They’re enduring the disappearance of their eldest son somehow or other. The police investigation has no leads, and Kenichi is trying to comfort Naoko but it’s not that effective. They’re passing each day tearfully.

Those painful flashes that Subaru had when trying not to go to school, THAT is a great representation of what a panic attack feels like. This episode explains so much about Subaru’s many behaviors in season one. It also shows he understood Rem’s inferiority complex because he had the same issue, and it’s interesting how neither could help themselves but they were able to help each other.

And both of them helped one another with a similar philosophy: Subaru: "I don't want you to tell me anything about it, so I can talk like I know *everything* about it." Having had a relatively similar phase as Subaru I cannot say how much I appreciate the way this was handled in this episode. This can pretty much break you. You don't notice it until it's too late and by then you'll think something along the lines of "what's the point of getting out now anymore?" but when you finally make that decision, that one step, to move forward -(until your enemies are destroyed *wink wink*)- and you look back on it, you'll realize that that step was probably one of the best decisions of your life. Sadly, Subaru had to take this step forcefully. Subaru is easily one of my favorite protagonists ever, largely thanks to this episode (though I already liked him quite a bit before), because of how much of a connection to him I can build, as these characters, the ones I can relate to the most, are usually the ones I love the most. I don't think I'll ever watch this episode without crying, just because of how close it hits to home.

The episode was really great, and Subaru parents are really well written, especially when one have in mind that 99,9% of anime parents are either dead, not even mentioned or working overseas, but still the title of best dad belongs to Byakuka from Dr. Stone. The guy literally worked rest of his life after an apocalypse (of sorts) to give even the slighest possibility for his son thousands of years later to have a better life. Not to mention selling his car to buy him science stuff and being the reason humanity survived before the "old" humans started to wake up.

This episode is amazing and is what completely confirmed my love for the show and is one of, if not my favorite episode in the series so far (and even with more seasons possibly on the way, it will be hard for other episodes to top this). And I'm gonna have to be honest, him remembering that "Take care" from his mom before he got transported in the other world broke me in a way I can't explain and made me sob really hard, just re-watching it in this video made me tear up again; Most likely it's because, while he gets to give his parents a goodbye, they never will, and just thinking about that is tragic and don't wish it upon any child or parent. It would be amazing if he gets to see his parents again, but from what I heard that will most likely never happen, so the pain from that "Take care" intensifies even more knowing that.

I love how Subaru passed the trial here; he unequivocally and irrefutably succeeded. Now you could argue that part of that is because, compared to the world he’s in now, his world is a lot safer and less threatening, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his own problems, the trial could easily have dragged him back to his worst state, but it didn’t. Subaru passed on his own merits. Subaru won this trial because he has had *character development!* Season 1 “I hate myself” Subaru couldn’t have passed this, or at least certainly not on the first try.

Two eps ago in AssClass with had Nagisa's mother trying to make Nagisa her new copy devoid of her past failures. Now we see how Subaru feeling the pressure of not being like his amazing father even tho he never even asked him to be like that. And even the people around him werent expecting him to be like that out of malice or some dark desire. Whether the parents are good or bad, people around them expect the kids to follow their steps. Sometimes it is good sometimes is bad depending on what kind of people the parents. Expecting the kid to be a bad person because the parents were is unfair. Expecting the kid to be good just because the parents are good is wishful thinking. Then there is Subaru who is a good kid, and very capable but a few drops in his self esteem made him see those expectations as too much to handle. Loved this episode but unfortunately it isnt the best one of this season.

There's a few mistakes throughout the entire season, but there's one that's pretty grave in Episode 16 ("Nobody can lift a quain stone alone", SPOILERS AHEAD): Near the end, Garfiel says that he saw what Subaru had done in the grave. He obviously meant the love letters and Puck drawings that Subaru left in the walls of the test room. But Crunchyroll's translation made almost all KZbinrs I've seen think that he meant the kiss, and made *a lot* of them think that Subaru was beating his meat 🤦♂️ I know SOS Bros would get what Garfiel meant, but it still would be preferable for them to get a good translation.
