This episode was directed and storyboarded by Akiyuki Shinbo, who was the driving factor behind Shaft developing its trademark style. He's done several other episodes before this (like the one where Yusuke finally absorbs Genkai's power) too and does some after as well. A guy named Atsushi Wakabayashi was the animation director too, and he is responsible for the off model/stretchy stuff. I've watched another reaction of YYH by someone interested in animation and the team of these two often resulted in the best animated episodes.

Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite anime of all time. (Hiei was my favorite character for a very long time, still holds a place in my heart) I just jumped on the bus this episode since it was recommended to me. (I’ll have to look at more soon!)This is one of my favorite episodes in the show, the episode was a huge inspiration to me when I was younger. Now I’m an animator! One thing I love about yu yu hakusho is the development of the characters over the span of the show. It’s a huge milestone for Hiei personally in this episode. The thing that sets this show apart from other shonen of it’s time is the internalization of situations by the characters. Which is something that becomes more and more apparent as time goes on, also the genuine camaraderie between the cast. Thank you for doing this episode, it was great to see other people reacting to such a wonderful piece of media. Have a wonderful day!
@EAZ365882 жыл бұрын
Hiei although he looks a bit surprised doesn't actually try to dodge the attack. And afterwards he says "Only I have had the courage the strength and the abandon to realize it's glorious potential" to me this sounds like you made the split second decision to go for an All or nothing Gamble or basically he's fighting the dragon and either it consumes him and there's nothing left or he consumes it and gets Uber powerful and his gamble pays off. Most people wouldn't be willing to take a risk like that but it's the sort of thing Hiei would do

So, in the manga, the buildup wasn't nearly as long, Hiei just took off the bandages and shot the dragon, none of the black flame going amok, and the bit where Bui stopped the initial blast and Hiei giving it an extra kick was also anime only, and finally, Bui remembering his loss to Toguro and that being the impetus for throwing off the dragon is also anime only. I actually like the additions the anime made, as it made the whole thing more cinematic and added a bit more to Bui's character. One little thing that is very personal: this is one dub change that I don't like, as the Dragon of the Darkness Flame is called "Immolating Black Dragon Wave" in Japanese, and I find that name infinitely more cool, but that is just a small thing that I don't let get in the way of my enjoyment.
@transientanus2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that "Immolating Black Dragon Wave" Is a much better name. In the first appearance of the technique, that name does appear on screen. I think that a lot of times in dubs, names get changed in an effort to match the dub to the motion of the characters mouths. Its apparently one of the hardest things about adapting anime scripts for dubbing.
@ryuhitsuya212 жыл бұрын
Okay truthfully yes that name is absolutely badass... but for a dub translation the way its said by hiei makes the name badass. It's not too shabby

So this anime has had animation changes before at times (Yusuke vs Gin stands out in my mind at the moment) it's usually due to the anime having lead animators and/or directors change per episode at times. You'll continue to see episodes that look sorta like this and some that also have their own unique art style if you have the eye for it will also happen later not like this style. As for this episode iirc this was a animator who follows the idea of being on model is not correct to display motion and employs squash and squish techniques common in the west for example (some call it loony toon looking when you freeze frame the animation) iirc he went on to do some of Naruto biggest and best fight scenes throughout that show or it was a student of his technique I forget. There is another animator in yuyu that employees a similar style tho with the stretching he was younger iirc and may have been the one to go onto naruto its hard to remeber the small details. Also note the heavy blacks and contrast you've seen some of that before and this will not the the last. A trademark of the creator here.

>like Vegeta Hiei has never beaten Yusuke (where as Bejita-sama is undefeated against Gokek **2-0**). He wasn't ever really his rival (let alone nemesis). Definitely isn't taking the main girl for his own. As you note, he doesn't even get paired up with the main events (to job). Lacks a child that saves the franchise, too. Just doesn't seem too much like the comparison holds substance. He's got family and cared about them right away (Vegeta sure didn't). Geets is the senpai here, too. He's older than YYH itself. NOTE: Bui is Broly. Shame the Funi Vegeta (among others) conspired against him when he was poised to take control of directing. They had their pathetic little hit list, but at least that business got put on pause (along with the casting couches and such).
