The first time Yusuke died accidentally and didn't want to come back... He didn't see the value his life. This time he dies willingly doing all he can do. He's learned the value of his life and he sacrifices himself anyway to propel his friends forward. Powerful storytelling from Togashi.

Heeeeeeere we go I love how Yusuke's death physically shakes the world. Even Botan is shook all the way in Spirit World. And I love how we fully explore Kuwabaras feelings here. Yusuke pushes him to be stronger, he doesnt want to win he wants to improve, and sees Yusuke likes getting stronger too, and feels a sort of kinship with him. Because Yusuke is the strongest hes known

There is one moment in the manga that the anime cut out, which I think is a shame. Keiko wasn't as involved with Yusuke and the gang in the manga, and Atsuko was the one interacting with the group there. So, Keiko hears about a fight happening near Yusuke's apartment, and goes to check on them. She finds Atsuko sitting in front of the door, holding Puu's body and asking Keiko "He's not waking up. Why isn't he waking up?" And thats when Keiko realizes what just happened.

I really don't understand why the anime decided to cut Yusuke's mom out of the story past like episode 6. Haven't read the manga, but from what I've heard it seems like she could've added some much needed humanity to this anime.

@@cartervandenberg4771 I guess to add the romance aspect to it. though still mostly in the background the anime has the growing romantic relationship between yusuke and keiko as a side plot.

She doesn't really contribute much during the dark tournament except getting drunk a bunch, and in the anime Kuwabara's sister Shizuru is more of a replacement for Yusuke's mom (Shizuru gets very little panel time in the manga but a lot more in the anime) Even in the first OP there's a goofy mixup with Atsuko/Shizuro which I'm assuming is because the anime staff weren't really sure what they wanted to do with Yusuke's mom - They showcased her drunkenness enough early on

Worth mentioning there's also a chapter near the end of the manga where they show Yusuke's real human dad (having a conversation with Atsuko) - And ofcourse that part was entirely cut from the anime (as was Kuwabara's dad)

I mean he was already playing with the conventions a bit. For one at the end of the day yusuke never wins without caveats after the saint beasts. toguro wanted to die, he won, but only because toguro molded the situation to get him to the point he could beat him. Sensui both wanted to die in a different way to toguro and raizen taking over for yusuke using yusuke's potential power but his expertise. While mechanically yusuke doesn't win the election tournament, though he does win philosophically. It's never a clean good vs evil showdown won by overwhelming strength/might, except maybe against the saint beasts.

Chris Sabat literally put his heart and soul into his VA performance for this episode, and it shines through. It’s the biggest reason why it’s impossible to watch this episode and NOT cry. Also, quite poignant that Sensui literally admitted that he respected Yusuke despite him being a soul that was simply fighting for the wrong side. Quite powerful for a foe to acknowledge their enemy’s impact even after having just killed them.

A lot of people dislike the way YYH ended, but personally I liked it. I actually really liked it. It wasn't your typical shounen ending and I'm glad it even got an ending because it was when Togashi's health issues ramped up and his editor wasn't really working with him. Togashi wanted to start to deconstruct Yusuke, but the editor was against it (Togashi said this in his goodbye letter when he left YYH). With that + his health problems, he dipped and came back with HxH where he had more freedom to work at it in his own pace and do whatever he wanted with the characters. The ''deconstruction'' happened with Gon, where he deconstructed him and reconstructed him. Deconstruction fully happened in the CA arc and the reconstruction happened in the election arc.

I just rewatched the sub version of this scene and the line is actually, "he's stronger than an ogre". In Japan, an ogre could fall under the branch of being an Oni, which is a form of demon.

Manga reviewers need to watch you guys. Its not about who the character is to us , its about who they are to the characters in the story. Folks say stuff like oh a nobody dies in this manga/anime then correct it and say well no important people when the character was important to other characters.(just wasnt in the story as often as folks would like)
