You really feel like hes up against a wall with no allies or security, but chooses to push forward anyway going against all he stood for, for the sake of doing what he believed was right above what he wanted. He constantly questions if hes made the right choices and constantly wonders if theres any hope of going back. His regret over having to do what hes done but his unwavering conviction in acknowledging he HAD to do it made him a lot more unique and introspective than all but a few

I actually rank Shay as my 2nd favorite, this side of Ezio. There's a lot to be said about the strength of Rogue's storytelling (plot contrivance by way of misunderstanding that could be solved with 10 minutes of adult conversation, hey there). But I always loved how, well, excellently fucked up Shay's character is. The utter despair and panic during the earthquake, the hesitation and regret every time he takes out a member of his old crew. I know I'm wrong (lol) but I personally find him a good deal more compelling than Edward Kenway; his screwed up actions are the fault of an extremely out-of-whack moral compass rather than personal greed. Edward Kenway falls because of his own vices, but Shay Cormac falls because he's effectively a tormented crusader constantly grappling with the reality of what he's really doing. He rips open his chest and fucking bleeds the entire time, and ultimately gains nothing for it.

To be honest, I wish that Shay and Arno's story get expanded. Ubisoft clearly missed the opportunity to put a nice conclusion to both of their stories, especially how they set up that Shay killed Arno's father. Shay is a perfect guy to set up as a final boss for Arno to overcome. Before Shay's fans come here and say things like "no, Shay is a good guy so why we have to kill him", calm down. The conflict between them can be set up in a morally grey area, where both the Assassins and the Templars have the own reasons for their actions. Eventually, the last boss fight will be between Arno and Shay, and Shay will question Arno about his conviction and morality. At the end of the boss fight, Arno will not kill Shay since Arno now understand his opponent's point of view, but Arno still continue to believe in the Assassin's way to make a better world. To make each side seems more balanced, Shay is now an old man so he is not at his peak physic, but he is now an experienced high-ranking Templars with powerful allies and well-trained soldiers specialized in counter-assassin tactics; while Arno is still at his youth, he lacks experiences compared to Shay, so he will get supported by the allies he makes throughout the game (Connor can even appear as a support character and help Arno).

I know this is a year later and you’ll probably never see this, but I’ve been thinking of something similar for along time. If the story was set up in a similar manner as AC 3, with us being able to play as both characters, but this time for equal halves of the game. Maybe it would start with Arno finding out who killed his father by a Templar in France and travelling to Canada or New York (although I think Quebec City would be a unique setting) to seek out shay and Shay continuing his work for the templars until he is ordered to kill Arno when word gets out that he’s in North America. Or maybe the two meet coincidentally with Napoleon asking Arno to go to North America. Shay would be adewalae’s age in Rogue since the setting would probably be right after dead kings or else Shay would be pushing 70 (I think he was born in the 1720s if I’m not mistaken). He would be much older, wiser, and would offer a unique protagonist that we haven’t really seen since AC revelations with older Ezio. And Arno would likely be a high ranking assassin too. The ending could be more advanced, with the player being able to choose who to kill (adding an element of choice that AC has tried by failed to implement) although them figuring it out would be my pick, maybe even teaming to kill a more evil enemy. Realistically something like this would be a slam dunk for Ubisoft. Two already established characters that leave 0 room for fan and media criticism about the character before the game comes out. Like with shadows having a black samurai or Evior be gender fluid, which although I personally have no strong opinions on these choices, it’s undeniable that they pushed old fans away and hurt the sales on launch. Also seeing Arno and Shay in next gen graphics would be insane.
@huyvouc9785Ай бұрын
@@mister_salmon5693 I'm glad that there are still people who is interested in the potential of a game that feature both Arno and Shay. It's been a while since I wrote the og comment, so I may add some gameplay ideas that I've been thinking: +At the start of the game, Arno will have access to some of the tools that he had back in Unity (phantom blade, berserk blades, bombs,...). As the story progress, he would gain access to more tools (for example, bombs customization like Mirage or Revelations, rope darts, traps,...). +Since in this game both the Assassins and the Templars are trying to gain the upper hand, there should be some kind of "faction affinity" bar. The more you do missions for the Assassins successfully, the bar will go up, and you will receive more and more support from the citizens (for example, give you presents or money, or maybe even try to stall the guards for you to escape, let you stand in crowds and hide from the guards, give you more info about the Templar dens). On the other hand, if you die in a mission/ignore a mission for too long/attack citizens, the bar will drop and the citizens' opinion will lean more to the Templar (for example, call you out when you are hiding in crowds and attract guard's attention, throwing rocks at you when you are parkour-ing, refuse to give you information about the Templars). +Also, the kidnapping system from Syndicate should make a comeback, this time, with one more feature: interrogating.. For example, if Arno successful kidnap a low ranking Templar, he can use "interrogating" to make him spill the info about the location of the guards, and show them on the mini map, or even the info about the assassinated target (sth like MGSV).

I’d have to say that I mostly agree with the list, very good points and very true things. Personally I would’ve bumped Connor just because I personally really resonate with him, he’s quiet and introspective and maybe a little introverted as well as being able to be brutal and angry at the inequality and injustice, which are some of the qualities I do have. Id also like to say that I would’ve liked for you to have given some honorable mentions to Haytham and Adéwale who I feel help a lot to contrast the whole of the Americas games, as well as showing the different elements of the Kenway bloodline and how each of the three Kenways do have similarities of each other but what matters is their differences.

Feels like i am the only people understand why he's the way he is the game purely because not only he's a native and a foreigner,He wasn't nurtured properly as a child too as his home got destroyed with his mother dying rather early and ofc Haytham abandoned him at such a younger age and he had a really depressing past cus he got only himself to help..So it makes sense why he can be dumb because he's not like other characters and he did take his time getting adjusted to such foreign society and setting. If anything i'd say he's on my top 3 with Ezio and Edward taking the first and second spot respectively.It's understandable why most really don't like him but it just sucks that not many bother to understand or sympathize with him and prefer simple written characters because they are easier to understand and digest.

Edward is probably my pick for best main character as well. His whole journey, start to finish is just so damn good and the ending so heartbreakingly beautiful and perfect. It works cause I think deep down, secretly, every man on the planet can relate to Edward and his struggles, the stress and pressure to provide and protect conflicting with his lust for adventure and heroics and his desire to be respected. Like most men, Edward goes through life wanting to be the hero of his own story while striving for more, for better days, unaware of the fact that everything he could ever want or need is right here right now and before he knows it, it's all past and he realizes all too late that those WERE the best years of his life and not only did he take them for granted, he squandered them and made a mess not just of his own life, but the lives of those he loved most.

I wouldn't describe Edward's story as one of a man trying to become a better person. He was forced into becoming better against all his efforts. He spends 90% of the main story being the worse person, trying to get the Observatory for personal gain. It's along the way that as he tries to stay true to his principles, he is stripped of his friends one by one, until only Adewale remains, and each loss drives him to thinking what really matters to him in life. Is it wealth or freedom? And with the Templars being an omnipresent threat to that freedom, he finds purpose in protecting the world from them.

I agree with Edward Kenway, he feels like perfect example of what franchise could achieve post Desmond trilogy times by focusing how people accidentally found their way into assassin/templar war while reflecting on own baggage through main theme of Assassin's Creed while keeping it together with modern day plot. But due to Unity being such mess it pretty much shoot series in the foot of eternal confusion of what to do. Honestly, Assassin Creed has the framework for the most diverse and genre melding stories, but it really doesn't do them justice in most cases. JoJo BA, Final Fantasy and Zelda pretty much display how much variety one series can achieve while keeping some mechanics and themes same. JoJo Part 7 simply would make for great Assassin's Creed game with few changes.

I have played all the games except Valhalla and Liberation. I can confidently say your top 3 are mine as well. Edward and AC4 are still my ultimate favorite games and I remember the ending so vividly the most to this day than I have any other AC game to date. I remembered being so surprised when I started to tear up at the end and to realize how much I truly loved AC4 and Edward, even over AC2, ACB, and ACR with Ezio. It truly was a great character journey. It's a shame how Edward eventually died and how Haytham ended up 😞

I do wish Edward had a better ending, but I appreciate that not every Assassin lives to their 90s like Altair. The fact that Ezio dies peacefully at 65 and Edward dies barely out of his prime makes them feel a little more human. I hope in the future we get more games that showcase the protagonist’s whole life, beginning to end

Hard agree on everything you said. When it comes to characters, it feels like Ezio, Edward, Bayek and Kassandra get the most out of their games and how they interact with the world. I agree that Bayek feels so much nuanced than Kassandra, yet I feel Odyssey fleshed out the secondary characters and villains far more than Origins. Ezio has the benefits of 3 games and Edward's redemption arc was just beautiful.

6:31 I feel like this point was actually something that makes connor more complex. I like the idea that connor is naïve because he is a native american venturing through the unknown world that is the American colonies. All of these concepts are new to him so connor seeing all sides and sticking to the assassin’s ideals was something i loved about him. Ngl i am bias coming up with this argument bc i love ac3 tho so idk just a thought

In AC3, I think most people didn't really understand the deeper meaning of "it seems your tongue has tasted sour grapes" idiom of connor They already assumed connor was dumb and just brushed it off thinking he's bringing fruits in politics

the love between bayek and aya felt natural? excuse you? all i saw was bayek desperatly chasing after someone who had moved on a LONG time ago, possibly even before the death of their son. and for that matter, my main complaint about origins was that aya regularly stole bayeks thunder, not only taking out bayeks targets (wtf?!? only ac game that does this btw). aya also plays a major part in the endgame where it just doesn't make ANY sense. kinda showing ubisoft came back from making her the main protagonist.

I do not play Assassin's Creed games anymore, but from age 12-16, Assassin's creed was my entire life, so I am a bit biased. AC4 was the last AC game I played to completion, and I fell in love with the story back in 2013. Edward had become my favorite character in the entire series. Just last night, I finished the game for the second time after 10 years, and I think I love him even more than before, I cried just the same as I did when I was a teenager. The way you put it is just the way I was trying to explain to my friends why I love him so much. I was deep in the trenches defending him when people were calling him a "bad assassins" back when he was new, and I am still here, praising him for everything he is worth... Anyway EDWARD KENWAY 🗣🗣🔛🔝🗣🗣

Bro, I think you might be me cuz this is exactly the list I would make. Excellent job at analyzing each character. BTW I think Ubisoft should seriously consider REMAKING classic Assassin's Creed games. Now they seem to be just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. IMO they should just take the beloved story from the Desmond Saga and remake all 5 games. Having the hindsight, writers could improve on the story as a whole and make each character more interesting and fleshed out. Just imagine how interesting AC1 could be if it was remade. We could get a fascinating story about a man of conviction whose beliefs are being constantly challenged by morally grey antagonists. If I were to remake AC1, I would ensure that the story is morally ambivalent. Templars should not feel to us like "the bad guys". To Altair, they should be simply TARGETS - people he kills because the master ordered it, not because they are objectively evil tyrants. Confession scenes where the targets shake Altair's beliefs are the most interesting moments of AC1 in my opinion. This should be the theme of the entire game!

It would be tough to say. The issue is he is way more interesting in AC Valhalla, but in Mirage, the game where he is actually the protagonist, he is really dull.

The Templar order is the work of the inu civilization. They have all the known artifacts. The assassins are just the outcasts who hide and kill corrupt officials. It would be really cool to see a major entry/reboot that you're in abstergo stealing information and God items and you play as an assassin that's just insane and all seeing and a living demonic entity, which would make the search for power more intense. An actual well thought out psychopath with completely jarring morality would be an interesting entry. Would be a cool precursor to assassins who were actually not human but could be followed through their experiences in other parallel dimensions. Plus youre adding in a character motivation that includes historian first accounts/accurate divine intervention which is kinda hype from a player perspective.

I rememerb watching the trailers everyday, waiting for more news week by week, and being amazed by Edward in the trailers. And then I played the game when it came out, and throughly appreciated Edward for his character. I didn't expect to see him on the top of the list, but I'm glad I did.

For the sole fact he’s the only one with 2 or more games, Ezio #1 is the only correct answer

Edward above Ezio... did get me to say what... but you make a fantastic point he really was the most human and he did have a arc that covered the whole game, the last scene with the Parting glass is one of the more emotional AC games too. He was in more of a DLC role but how would you have ranked Adéwalé?
@FauulaBoy Жыл бұрын
Connor is one of my favorite character since he kind of reminds me of young Kratos. An unstoppable force that wouldn't stop until his revenge is done. Kinda wish there was another game showing his growth to being a wise man trying to ensure his people survival against the increasing USA expansion.
@BonnieFluff Жыл бұрын
This makes me think. Where would you squeeze other 'main' characters in? Desmond, Layla, Adewale (he got a mini-game for some reason, he counts) and Haytham especially. I mean, I'd personally put Haytham at number one. His story in Forsaken is number one worthy alone. I agree with most of this though, Jacob (who I share a name with so I'm biased) and Evie are very underrated, as is Syndicate as a whole. I mean it has songs after you kill the targets, what other game has that? It's great to find an AC channel that's mostly positive reflection, I really like it.
