This guy is the best! I had never installed flooring before and watched a lot of his videos, some repeatedly. When I came to a difficult problem when installing the flooring I knew exactly what to do. The floor turned out beautiful. I installed a luxury vinyl plank flooring in a large living- dining area, down a hall and into 2 rooms. I ran the flooring into 3 closets and had 2 transitions to tiled rooms as well. Everything is first class and I have a job that I am proud of. It would not have been possible without these videos. I also joined his Flooring University.

I am studying how to install vinyl plank flooring in my house starting with the room over the garage. (I've already ripped the carpet out, got rid of the popcorn ceiling and re-taped and mudded the seams and repainted the ceiling!) But as soon as I get excited thinking that I've got this flooring issue figured out, I get SUPER intimidated by the math and precise measurements required. My mind sort of panics when it comes to fractions and possibly being "off" by a tiny bit and ruining the whole project. Your videos have been by far the best at explaining everything (I'm a retired Marine and we always called it "break it down potato-head style" haha, meaning "piece by piece") but that's the best way some of us learn!! This is NOT an easy project and also NOT one I want to have to do over, so thank you very much for taking the time to explain everything and (yes....I hate to say it) but THANK YOU for the drawn diagrams! :) Some of us are very visual learners and it puts everything together. Thanks again! -The lady that makes alot of trips to Home Depot in Virginia Beach!

Hi Joel, I visited your other video on How to install the last few rows of laminate flooring. I visited Homo Depot and they did not have a clue what a mini planer was. I called up Lowes and no help there either. Finally went to Ace Hardware here in my home town of Conyers Ga. They had it and I bought it. I adjusted the blade so as to get ribbons of wood coming off the lower surface of the male tang locking piece. I did the same to the end locking piece. I used the clear Gorilla glue and the end result looks great. Thank you for helping out a new guy to laminate installation. I did install several rooms of Homo Depot Allure vinyl flooring.

Outstanding videos. Made my multi-room install of engineered hardware so much easier to know how to make it "right" without having to re-do things. From basing things off of the center of the longest area (hallway), to putting boards together (10) to get the cheat sheet, to working backwards tips, to putting down some scraps that are screwed in to give a solid foundation to tap tight future rows. All worked out outstandingly for me. Without getting into all of the details, I found the center of the hallway, put together 3 rows to span the "width" of the house as I didn't have great locations elsewhere to create a another measurement for the chalk line. We left these there just for another point of reference during the laying of the flooring. The most satisfying part was when we finished a dining room and large foyer and the boards snapped in PERFECTLY to the ones put down the width of the house. ALL because of your tips and instructions throughout this video series. We still have some edge pieces to go, and a few feet down the L shaped hallway where it meets carpeted bedrooms, a tile bathroom, and 2 closets, but those are all just a little more tedious, but not hard, thanks to you.

Hey thanks for this video, I'm a helper It's crazy how little planning some installers have when laying their first row, usually they just snap a line off a wall and go from their and then we end up with a 1in rip across a wall because of the poor starting point. Now I know how to judge and plan a job and what to avoid, I've worked for a variety of install companies, and anyone can do a square room, but usually what I've seen is when the layout gets more complex the quality of work goes down.

Joe, I have watched all of your KZbin videos on laying laminate and vinyl plank, several of them many times. I'm kind of a handy guy and have already installed a stone pattern laminate with 4 ft. by 15 inch sections that started in our dining area, went thru the kitchen, around a peninsula, and into the laundry room. That was ten years ago and the floor still looks as good as the day I finished it. I'm getting ready to install my first vinyl plank floor which will cover our living room, family room, foyer and hallway. Your KZbin video series on installing laminate and vinyl plank flooring has been invaluable In preparing myself for the job. I have also watched videos by others. I must tell you that your videos cover the entire process better than any others I save seen. Your attention to detail in your explanations is helpful beyond any other video I've seen. Thank you very much for your fine work. Right now, we're involved in the prep work of removing wood parquet and carpet, and preparing the sub-floor for the vinyl plank. As soon as the new flooring arrives, we'll get started using many of the techniques and tips I have learned from your videos. Thank you. You're the best I've seen on the Web, or anywhere else, for that matter..

I just completed an install of Home Depot LifeProof Vinyl Planking, long hallway with 4 bedrooms 0 - 2 off each sided. I watched all your videos twice through, and everything came together very nicely. Began by working out the midline of the Hallway, marking line, then working out the parallel line into both rooms to the Left of the hallway. I started in the largest room, back in the left corner of the closet and worked my way across the room to the hallway. Then did the next room the same, and magically, both ends entered into the hallway the exact same distance. Placed down the Hallway side pieces, then full planks, then other side pieces, and then flowed into each of the two rooms to the right. Thinks I used were: Good knee pads, both hard construction for when on the sub floor and soft ones for when on top of the installed floor. Dual headed Hammer, tapping block, metal pull bar, and plastic wall spacers. I made the Stop Blocks and used screws from when I installed tile flooring to hold them down. I made 5 Tapping Blocks so I would not need to keep moving one as I worked. I found that I also needed to make a Mini Tapping Block for with spaces. I then also make Reverse Tapping Blocks and a Sideways tapping block for when I needed to move a plank lengthwise. I used a long piece of 1" x 1/8" x 8' aluminum bar stock as a long straight edge for marking rip cuts in the planks. I used a Speed Square for making the cross cuts. Started out using a Japanese undercut saw, but ended up getting a cheap Oscillating tool from Lowes. I also installed new door casings, headers and floor trim and used the 50 gal compressor I have with my pneumatic brad gun. If you just follow everything just as it is explained here, anyone can do this. Fun project - and much thanks to you for providing all these great explanations on how to do it all.

I have to tell you, my husband and I followed your instructions to the t, and boy did it pay off! I did my homework, and took notes watching your videos, made my cheat sheet and my little blue print, etc. It came together perfectly! We took the flooring through almost the whole main floor of the house including the living room, dining room, kitchen, long hallway, and the master bedroom. Your method of laying everything out caught my attention because we had to go down this long hallway and I wanted the boards to be fairly even on each side and I wanted to ensure we weren't laying them out crooked. We even used your method of bracing the flooring with little scraps screwed to the floor. Wish I could post you a picture in here to show you some of the results! Seriously, thank you so much for posting these videos! I don't think we ever could've done this much, with such great results, without your help/knowledge. God bless you!

So when he adds the 3 1/16 " to the 2" board what he is really doing is removing 1 full board and distributing a full boards width between the two end boards, same overall width just making the outside boards wider for a better look. You would only do that if the outside boards are less than 1/2 width of the board.

Your videos are great, very informative, I typically center each room, changing directions in the rooms at the main doorway for a transition without the transition piece, I actually prefer the look over the whole house running one direction, just my preference of course, just wondering if you ever change directions in each room, also I tend to run hallways the short way, it increases my cuts, but I prefer the look, as opposed to the long run in a hallway looks like a bowling alley to me, again just preference, thanks for the very informative videos, and the time you take to contribute.

I'm going longitudinal from far wall, removed baseboards, to bathroom entrance cutting around vanity to entrance. If vinyl not completely straight (1/32) whew!!! I'll fill it with caulking then put on baseboards. ITS MY BASEMENT BATHROOM AND I DON'T CHARGE MUCH FOR MY OWN WORK)! Bro wants me to spend money for a pro. Only I will see the flaws. I can't tweek measurements. Caulkinking covers a lot of my basement flaws.I'M ALREADY SICK OF IT! But, thanks for posting your expertise on how to do it the right way.

I’m going to be installing flooring throughout my home. I’m also replacing the kitchen counters. Since the counters are coming off, would it be better to pull the cabinets and run the laminate underneath?

Never mind, I just got the answer in one of your other videos. Thank you so much for your videos. I’m a lot more confident about this upcoming project.
