I don't think anyone's asking why he didn't just run and tag Judge. We're all asking why he didn't just flip the ball to second for the double play?
@Phil-S8
@Phil-S8 17 күн бұрын
I think because the 2nd baseman charged the ball, and because he was already on the base path, his mind went to tagging the runner instead of doing a 180 and throwing to 2nd. Maybe he thought Judge would run into him before he did the 180 as well (his balance probably would've been off since he charged the ball, and is now doing a 180). But yeah, he should've gloved it and thrown it to 2nd instead of getting on the base path.

Yeah. Try the double play. Flip to 2nd then 1st. If no double play (safe at first), should then have 1dt and 3rd 2 out at worst

As a semi pro softball player, I think they should have attempted double play and then Soto wouldn't have had time to score. Lazy defensive play gave up the run and Heads up hustling all the time is what champions are made of.

If Judge was a little more aggressive he could have gotten obstruction on the second baseman. He was very slow clearing the base path after he threw to first. Judge would have gotten second for free, but maybe that would kill the play and prevent Soto from scoring.

Yes, I saw that right away. When you're as heavy as Judge, it can be hard to change directions rapidly. But it would be a good play to create contact.

Judge may not have great speed, but he has always been a very good base runner. Doesn't steal a lot, just picks his spots and rarely gets caught. I'm sure it has happened, but I can't remember ever seeing Judge thrown out on the bases if he tries for a double, or trying to take two bases when a teammate singles. And he makes heads up decisions like you showcased here. And for a guy who is 6'8, with past injuries to his lower body, he's decently fast.

I've seen this play in women's NCAA softball this year, runner on first's job is to bait the fielders into ignoring the lead runner. A basic play that is great when it works!

Judge could have run into the second baseman after he threw the ball to create interference. Although it worked out better that he didn't
@heyblue3251
@heyblue3251 16 күн бұрын
That could work though there is a risk that umpire doesn't give the call if Judge did it too unnaturally. btw, you mean Obstruction - picky, I know, but the rules make a distinction. The Defense Obstructs, the Offense Interferes.

I believe he means why didn't the 2nd baseman flip th3 ball to the short stop who was ready to back up 2nd base (early in the sequence the short stop appears top left coming up to the bag.) Instead the 2nd baseman went for a tag instead of turning around and flipping to the short stop. That situation wasn't explained

Heads up base running by the Yankees but 2 mistakes by the Jays. As highlighted in the video, with Bichette not shortening the run down distance but more importantly… 0:28. Just flip the ball to 2nd, throw to first. Double Play. Inning over. Jays up 1-0 going into the bottom of the 4th.

It was a good play by Judge to hold up and draw the 2nd baseman BUT he had an opportunity to brush into that second baseman at 1:18 after he threw the ball and try to get an obstruction call. Once the ball is thrown you don't look back but instead look to see if you can run into the fielder that threw the ball and get that obstruction call. The base runner must do it in a way that it appears unintentional and should stumble a little when brushing by him to make the obstruction obvious to the umps. Also the base runner already past 3rd and heading home would get his base because of that obstruction (as per the rules). If the obstruction isn't called immediately it can be appealed. If you don't get the call on appeal you often get a few sympathy calls later on.

I thought the mistake was by Guerrero -- should have kept an eye on Soto while running down Judge. If Soto runs, get him at home; if not, get Judge at 2nd. Bichette fine waiting at second for that play; it gives Guerrero easier play to watch both. TV commentators saw Guerrero at fault.

@@johndoe-yw7eb lol! I agree, but that’s the only thing that makes sense, right? The only reason not to throw it over and try to tag the runner instead is if you don’t think you’ve got time to double up with the flip. It was a soft hit ball, so I think that must’ve been the reasoning.

Vlad didn't look over to third at all, a glance and a cock of the arm likely keeps Soto from going for home, and he'd have plenty of time to flip it to 2nd.

he could not tag judge out because he is the fastest center fielder in the history of the mlb who is 6'8". soto should have not tried to score. he hurt his right hand it swelled up and xrays are negative, he is out for 2 games. soto should avoid sliding until he signs his 15 year contract.
