The beginning of a legendary franchise that slowly burned out 😞. The Dreamcast version of SoulCalibur was god-teir and the #1 greatest fighting game ever for me, even over Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Capcom vs SNK 2 (lots of sequel greatest lol). And the character you were thinking of is Knightmare, my personal favorite.

@@ChorizoMachine It's always near the top of every Greatest Fighting Games of all Time lists, without fail. It's perfection, and every aspect of it still holds up gloriously today. You should definitely do a video on it

Great vid Mike! Great memories. I pumped so many hours into this game. The small bar is weapon health. Gave the game added layer of depth so you couldn't just block or your weapon would break. Then it was down to hand combat! This series turned into Soul Caliber but for me this version was a bit slower paced and all the better for it. Legendary game. Cheers mate 😊

David A from Discord here. Never played, will do, but have played Bushido Blade, loved that. I still remember vividly 1st trying PES, ISS Pro Evo 1 on PS1. I saw it in a gaming mag and I thought wtf is this!? I have to go buy it now. I get home, starting playing and I am transformed, a changed man. The leap in possibilities and depth from FIFA or any game I had played previously to PES was gigantic. Was like going from Connect 4 to suddenly playing chess.

Matt has good taste, it's the sort of stuff I'd request too! Hell of an intro, shame you didn't show it off. This game was Soul Edge in Japan and it got renamed Soul Blade due to the Edge patent troll that was kicking around at the time. It would then be followed by Soul Calibur, which would then more or less become the name of the series. Both Soul Edge and Soul Calibur are the main swords of this franchise - Edge being the evil sword and Calibur is its good counterpart but it's not necessarily nice in its pursuit of good. Shame the series hit a slump on SCV and while they did get a good game after that in SC6, it seems to be on stasis while Tekken 8 is a thing.

Also, if I may request a fighting game, how about Tekken Tag Tournament for the PS2? Game's a bit broken but I think you'll like it, hell of a soundtrack too.

Oh, and on the other fighting game question - we're currently at: Mortal Kombat 1 (technically 12) Tekken 8 (sold a lot) Street Fighter 6 King of Fighters XV (also Garou - City of Wolves) Dead or Alive 6 (I think) But the cool thing about fighting games is being able to go back and playing older stuff. Kinda why I requested Melty Blood AACC back in the day, they're all fun in their own ways.

That's a guy called Tim Langdell who ran a thing called Edge Games. They have a small catalog and were mostly there to whip lawsuits over anyone who used the word Edge on games. Namco got knocked with it following the release of Soul Edge which is why every game after that was Soul Calibur. Eventually, he went after EA who then proceeded to slaughter the hell out of his claims and trademarks.
