RIP Joey. Now he's playing in heaven with all the greats!

May 23, 2022 is when I was last blessed to see and hear and talk to Joey. That night his dad was in the audience. He played the B-3, trumpet, sax, and even sang. I miss him nore than I can say. Music lost a giant. On April 9th, 2023 a tribute concert in his honor was held at the MIM in Phoenix. His wife spoke to us about him. It was so sad and yet so joyous as Lewis Nash and Ronnie Foster played their hearts out in tribute to the man. His music will live on.

Around 2002, I met him after a Nashville show. I shook his hand and exclaimed, "I do believe Art Tatum done got reincarnated as an organ grinder!" He grinned and replied, "Thanks!". Around 2004, I inquired about a B3 he had for sale on eBay. Later, when I met him after a show, he remembered, and asked "Did you buy an organ yet?" Although monstrously gifted, he seemed genuinely approachable and even humble. What's all this dust in my eyes?

This man was the man that was born on planet earth and decided at an early age that the organ would become an organ of his own body.

“Today jazz loses a point of reference - says La Spezia jazz drummer Matteo Cidale -, a great talent, a multi-instrumentalist. He had been discovered by Miles Davis and from that moment Joey went through the fundamental and most important stages playing with the greats of the world jazz scene. He recorded his first album at the age of 16 and he found himself playing on the most important stages with names of the caliber of Jimmy Smith, Benny Golson, Elvin Jones, Ray Charles, Diana Krall and many others ”. Many messages of condolence on social media, especially of disbelief and dismay from insiders, musicians, friends and people who have known Joey's great talent.

I still like the real thing. I've been keeping Hammond organs running for years. Sound aside the key length of a Hammond is probably the best mechanical key ever made. I wonder if those modern keys compare. When you are this good it matters less but for most of us it's a feel that helps us play best. You are the living inspiration of the Hammond jive.

@melchimichel39793 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it's based on one particular song. I hear references to "The Preacher" (Horace Silver), "Doxy" (Sonny Rollins), and "Hallelujah, I love her so" (Ray Charles), though none of those chord changes fits exactly.
